ALIENS the Board Game

Author Comments

This is an adaptation of the ALIENS board game made by Leading Edge Games into Flash.

It is a hard game, but there are only 3 missions. Enjoy the difficulty.

Good luck.

Flamer kills don't have acid spray. Use them on aliens up close, but when the alien is on a marine, it's too late for flamers. Use melee (fist icon) to try to throw the alien off.

Pistols are almost useless. These marines should just move or help melee an alien off one of his buddies.

Grenades kill aliens 1 square away from the blast square, but injure marines up to 6 squares away. Plus, there is a chance the grenade will miss the target square by one, so plan carefully if you want to use grenades.

NOTE: It was designed for 1024x786, so I'm sorry if it's hard to make out some details in 800x600.

Remember: short, controlled bursts.

This is my second spell playing this game, and it's even more fun this time round. It's difficult in a way that so many more recent games aren't. It's atmospheric and reflects the tension of the original game, and the movie, exceptionally well (great sound effects and soundtrack help here). There's every chance that a lot of the marines won't make it out alive.

Making it easier simply wouldn't be true to the source material or the leading edge games. The marines lost in the movie and there's really a sense of damage control, rather than an ideal of getting everyone out alive approach to the game.

It's very true to the rules and reasoning of the original board game. It's nice to see a good game not ruined by unnecessary tweaking and it also takes out so much of the time spent referring to the rules/cards of the original.

There are definite tactics to be used. From getting wiped out in the reactor, I can now get most, and once all, of the marines back in one piece. While these brave survivors were then wiped out in operations, I can now get a handful through to the final chapter.

I find the search for newt to be a bit easier, as I'm not after the queen, just newt, but then the board game gives an easier path through this section. Even then, there are no guarantees.

I find I constantly come back to this game, which considering the huge number of alternatives shows what an excellent job the author did of making it.

man this game is very good please make more

Fantastic stuff, well done!

Well, I have just discovered this and have been playing it constantly for about a week now. I'm a MASSIVE Aliens fan since the eighties, and I still have both the original Leading Edge board game and its expansion. What you have made with this simply amazes me! Thank you so much.
Yes it's bloody hard, I have only Once managed to get all the marines out of the Reactor Room, alive and fully intact. Only to be wiped out to the last man in Operations - it was just Newt, in the end, scurrying down the tunnels... but she could not run fast enough!
I really hope you come back and make more with this game - we need the Ripley/Powerloader vs the Alien Queen scenario. I always found this one very difficult. Excellent work with the recent updates - I love the ammo restrictions (all too realistic!) and flame squares (really useful!) I would be thrilled if you added Facehuggers to the Rescue Newt scenario - and how about the good old Hunt The Queen? It's a must - especially if you've made it out of Ops with at least 3 or 4 people.
What could be improved? Not much really. I would ask that you increase the MUSIC play time - I just love James Horner's score and I'm very glad that you have included it - but please make the samples a bit longer. I find myself getting annoyed that the sound clips keep repeating after 20 or so seconds, and personally for me, making the music longer would be extremely satisfying.

I also think that the original colour-coding for the charatcers would be a good idea. It would stay faithful to the board game and make it a little easier to see who's who, especially when zoomed out. I'd like to see the game automatically scroll through through and hi-light the character whose turn it is, up the top of the screen. As it is currently, if you have say, more than 9 men alive, you have to left-click to scroll through the list in order to find the character (to check his status for example). It should just auto-scroll along from left to right, as the men take their turns. And could you make the manually driven left-right scroll happen automatically just by holding the mouse over the white arrow icons? For a speedy scroll though.
That should do for now. I'll post more thoughts/suggestions as they come. Brilliant work, though! Thanks again!

Awesome boardgame reconstruction

I stumbled upon this site looking for the expansion pack for the original boardgame( after finding my original game in a box under the house). Just an awesome, close reproduction with easy to use interface. For the sake of old boardgame nerds like me an upgrade with all of the optional rules from the original (like the Frost and Deitrich rules, hand grenades, stairwell rule etc) and expansion pack would be nerdtastic. I agree with other comments that saves and a more comprehensive campaign score system would polish an incredibly solid bordgame. For the tweens who find it too hard, have a glass of cement, harden up and welcome to 80's gaming. To Homedrone, you're the man!
