My submission for the Wiggi World contest. A game about a plant-based life-form named "Bushy" who takes on the task of picking up the litter in the park he calls home, left by school-children on field-trip.

Use Bushy's "green-thumb" powers to navigate the cliffs and water-ways of the park, and help him avoid his enemies. Earn more powers as you reach new levels. And pounce on some un-suspecting goats.

Edit: Added a couple of things. First off, the upgraded recharge rate should now allow for a lot more room for error when utilizing the seed powers. there is also now a tutorial that you can take to help you understand the game mechanics before being thrown into the action. Also a couple bugs (# lives displayed from level to level, and taking back control of character using mouse) and spelling error corrected.

Quite a game you have there, I have to say. You seem not to have any problems with ideas, which is the most important thing. Executing your ideas is another thing, you have some issues to resolve there, but you are totally on the right track. OK, where to start from. Controls menu - should clarify that on rollover you get info about controlls, because people are lazy and they might miss that. Funny thing is - I didn't find a "back" button in this menu, so I had to close the window and open the game again to play it. Maybe there is but I couldn't see it. Another thing - controlls on the first seed were not working very well all the time, sometimes it allowed me to move it up just a little so I had to press on it like 15 times to get it to the height that I wanted. Check this one out if you can. The catapult grapics on ejection didn't seem realistic - it looked like you're going to fall down and in the next second you're flying high.
I know you spent quite a while on the graphics and they are good, but not great, you should work on that a little more.
Overall - despite the problems with controls and everything else mentioned, you have an excellent game concept. I salute you and I wish you good luck from now on.

The button on the instructions screen to get back to the main menu says "Main Menu"... right under the only other text on that screen that says "Mouse over images for controls"... so when you say people are lazy, and aren't going to take the time to notice... my guess is that you have first-hand experience.

Also, with the first seed and having to click on and off of the flower to raise and lower the platform, my guess here is that you had used up all of your super-power (noted, for your convenience, in a little log filled with the green of the power bar in the top-left hand corner of the screen). Each time you try to raise or lower the platform without any energy to do so, you are turned back into the main character again because you no loinger have the power to affect the flower.

However... even though there are legitimate explanations for why the game "failed" for you at times, I do understand that certain things could have been spelled out better to the player. Like walking through the features of the HUD at some point, and specificaly citing the energy meter that allows you to utilize your seed powers, etc.

Thanks for the review.

I'm slightly worried about entering the Wiggi World contest now - this is the first entry that I've been completely impressed with. The idea is original, the gameplay is fun, and the variety between the levels and seeds is impressive.

However, as its been said in a past review, the menus could perhaps use a bit of brushing up, and the power recharge was a bit slow, causing a slight annoyance at times.

Overall, great game - good luck in the contest!

smokinjoeevil responds:

Thanks for the review. Didn't mean to cause anyone worry! But I'm glad that you were impressed. I tried to compensate for the energy situation with a change made to give a bit of energy each time garbage is collected. But... that doesn't do anything for the recharge rate, which seems to be the more annoying issue.

One thing I thought about these games is that, if they are on a site like Wiggi World where kids can gearn "credits" as they play them, then a certain amount of required mastery is probably a good thing. Meaning that, the better/more-efficient you get at playing, the better score you can achieve. I myself, having of course designed the levels, am able to make it through the game with at least a bit of energy to spare on each level, in under the time limit for some extra points, and with an overall score of over 13,000. That's without collectinge every single piece of garbage, of course. And that takes a bit of mastery, as I said. But that's what it would take to earn the top credit amount, which sort of makes sense.

Great Game!

I think that this game is pretty good! Not a lot of violence, kinda fun, and a good lessen behind it! Dont litter! Well, you should come back with a Bushy's Cleanup Crusade 2 and have more levels more seeds, make it easier on the catapult thing, and other than that, this is pretty cool! All my 5!

smokinjoeevil responds:

Honestly, I was even thinking of stuff I could do for a sequel while programming this one! The time-requirement for the contest is what kept me from putting it all in, of course... that, and wanting to get it to the point of submission a bit early to try and see people's reaction before the deadline. Plus, I'm not sure how that would work because of having to turn it over to WIggi World and all...

A worthy competitor

As stubborn as I am, I have to say this is definately a worthy competitor to the game I'm working on for the contest. The gameplay was varied and interesting, if not a little slow, and the enemy-capturing animation made me laugh. It'll challenge kids to think. :) Good work.

smokinjoeevil responds:

Well, I should certainly hope it's a stiff competitor! :) I also do realize that it can lag somewhat at times... the graphics are what are doing it, and having so many on-screen. One of the slight problems with an 800 X 600 size requirement, and trying to pack enough into each part of the levels to keep 'em interesting. To my surprise, many of the serious coding-milestones (like adding the enemies) didn't cause any noticeable extra lag. Granted, the enemies don't do much, but there are consistent hits tests and what-not going on once you get a certain distance from them.

Thanks again, and good luck to you!
