Lazydaemon Review #260
It was a dark and stormy space... There I was, lookin' for a game to latch onto for some free time, a shooter that stood out a bit for me. Mostly, nothin' I'm interested in. And then...it walked into my life, turnin' my world into Monochrome.
Truth be told, there's nothing film-noir-like about this game, but I like the feel of it. At the same time as it is arcade-related and action-filled, it has a relaxing tone. You don't need shiny to get it done. Sometimes, ya need a little flash, like Flash Gordan or something. The point is, it's the unusual that sticks out, and this one is just that.
So far, I'm only ten missions in, and I find this to be pretty fun. Think I'll play the whole way through and...see where I get. I like outsmarting my enemy, and the save feature makes it so I don't have to do all this in one go. Just fine by me.
This could be the start of a beautiful friendship.
This COULD have been amazing...
...but its not. It's fun to play and addictive, but has alot of flaws. It's extreemely frustrating for one thing, especially during the boss fights. Sometimes the enemies spawn in formations that make it impossible to maneuver much except for one corner of the screen.
The music is extreemly corny and very boring. The whole black and white thing is cool...for about ten minutes before the arty farty novelty wears off and the lack of color makes it boring. I like how many weapons there are and the money system works great. However, your ship is way to fragile (one hit!? come on, even the weakest enemy can take more than that) and when you respawn your invincibility lasts just long enough for you to die again.
I played a few missions beyond the second boss, but really, I got bored and stopped. Good effort, I'll check your next submission. Make sure its colour.
"The money you get increases as the game gets farther. It doesn't take till level 50 to get something good, you can get a new weapon about every 5 levels early on." - Tyler Glaiel
Have you even played this game? I got a "good" weapon WAAAAY before level 50. I think... around level 20-30. And who would be stupid enough to buy a new weapon every 5 levels? That's a waste. All you need is one weapon, the one at the very bottom on the weapon selection screen. Not only will that get you through the entire game, but, well... it after you get that and 10 lives there's nothing else to really buy. Except for the laser, which would only be more helpful then that weapon on bosses. Wow. A entire 2-3 levels worth. On top of that, there is only one other weapon (widespread) that would be more effective on, again, a couple levels. Further more... backshot is useful? I did better off without it. Yeah, lets run up to the top of the screen to shoot turrets from the back... and then have an enemy ship pop up right in front of you and kill you. I would rather just kill them in a timeframe of 1-2 seconds, but thanks for the suicidal suggestion.
Beyond that... I liked the game. Buying extra lives last forever. It was long... now that I think about it, it was kinda boring a repeatative. 21 enemies for 70 levels? Could have made it 21-25 levels to save time. I was intent on beating it though. But yeah... weapon system epicly failed and money pretty much gets useless after you get the 'best' weapon.
Hopefully you can update this and make some simple improvements. I suggest starting off with making levels more dependable on different weapons, rather then being able to use one level 3 weapon through the entire game.
I had a lot of fun
I'm on level 25 right now on easy. It is a fun game despite the fact that it is in black and white, but I don't really mind.
Just a good old fashioned ship game, I relly liked it, and it´s the best one I´ve played.
