This is a Newgrounds classic, and I'm not going to lie: that might taint my review a little bit. However, I have a few solid complaints that are in line with what pretty much everyone else is bitching about, so hear me out and keep reading anyway... Or don't. It's just one review.
I always forget how difficult this game is. Unfortunately, part of it is just due to the cursor not staying inside the fucking game screen as it probably should, considering that this is basically a one-to-one-hand-motion murder simulator (that last part is NOT a complaint). It's also partially due to the lives system AND the lack of a health bar. Really, the former seems to be there just to tease the player, while the latter often makes death seem almost arbitrary - especially during those times when you take a shotgun blast to the torso and keep walking around, only to be killed by being lovingly caressed with a police baton. With all these handicaps, I really can't decide if the game's difficulty is genuine (i.e. by design), or artificial (i.e. by way of BAD design CHOICES, albeit probably unintentional ones). And yes, I know there are challenge modes that, a) are pretty fun in their own right, and b) unlock cheats to alleviate these issues. However, they're part of the same game, and as such suffer from the same issues. "Knifing Around" is a particularly good example of this phenomenon: you basically have to fling the cursor from one outer edge of the game screen to another; not to mention the fact that if your target is TOO full of knives, they may bounce off of him and detract from your score!
Now that that's over, on to the pros:
• Whatever the source of the challenge really is, it makes it that much more rewarding to clear a stage, choose one of those hilarious perks, and hope it keeps your internal organs where they should be in the next stage... which may or may not contain people riding...
• Jetpacks! A small game screen relative to the player kinda sullies this pleasure, but it's still a fun addition.
• Gun variety: I really do enjoy the wide range of weapons in this game. No two of them make one or the other seem redundant. Even the sounds they make are subtly different, which I find kind of neat in itself.
• Cute, whimsical, "early 2000's humor" story that makes the mindless violence (read: "Madness") that much more entertaining.
Moreover, as a few of the more understanding reviewers below have mentioned, this was uploaded in 2003, so some of the game's handicaps may well have been unavoidable. One workaround for the cursor issue is to zoom in on the game screen in your browser. Seriously guys, ctrl+mousewheel CAN be your friend! It doesn't help much, but it's better than nothing. Speaking for myself, it certainly helps keep me from... say... posting a condescending, knee-jerk blurb in place of a review, comparing it to one of its successors that came out almost a decade afterward, and rating the whole thing zero stars... You know, just as an example.
Not as Good as project nexus! Bad Controls, Bad gameplay etc. Sorry! 2 stars for effort.
All these kids on here like... you DO realize this was uploaded in 2003 right? some of you probably werent even alive then. Just think about that before shit-talking a classic.
effort can be seen i can tell you tried but try smarter
like alot of others i am to complaining about the mouse issue it seems it is not locked making the game extremely difficult so i will give the game a 1.5 for effort
