I really don't feel that much sympathy for the writers. They get paid to write stuff, and there are lots of writers out there who get no recognition at all despite their great talents.

So you're appathetic about the writers getting shafted because there are writers who get shafted? My mind is blown.

I have nothing against people who can use pot and lead a productive life. It's these sanctimonius hippies that make me wish I was a riot cop in the 60's

Why not try and get in touch with some of these writers/workers who are picketing and put together some animated shorts using the talent here on Newgrounds? It would be a great way to network, especially for those looking to elevate their careers. I'm willing to help in anyway, not that my flash work is anything special, but like the rest of people on this website, I can be creative when it comes down to it!

I think the writers are greedy and want more money & attention. Let them strike and be out of work.

Thanks to this strike we, as viewers, will be treated with even MORE of this damn reality tv. Maybe it'll kill it off for good,eh?

Actually, what we should do as a community is while the writers are all on strike is make our own Writers Guild and supplant these money-hungry freaks. Then in a few years we can go on strike ourselves!

Brilliant!

I remember that strike being a Blog of Note when I logged into Blogger. I lost interest and closed the window.

for the lulz

You can clearly tell who's ignorant of the subject just by the replies. Unless you have a good reason why writers shouldn't get paid royalties for internet advertisements, you've just made yourself look dumb.

I am in full support of the strike. I wish I was creative enough to come up with a way for NG to support them.

Well, I don't think it matters if you're friends with the writers or not. Strike is bad altogether, and I don't think it should be supported. I can completely understand the writers being furious, but why would we support a cause going on strike?

Response to Writers Guild Strike 2007-11-22 16:46:07

How about all major flash artists halt the production of their flashes until the strike is over? Millions of people who go on this site everyday would be outraged and at least a few will do something like protest in other sites which will cause a domino effect that could start a world-wide movement.

I guess you could make some sort of music video collab dealing with the strike.

If you ever become a writer, do not join a union!
But then you're paid less and can be fired without any protection.

Call me a scab, but that's America. This isn't Sinclair's "The Jungle" anymore. Writers have a good working enviroment and insurance. We're a democracy, if you pump out good work, and work hard, you will move up the ladder and make more money.

Paided less? They still have to pay union dues.

Protection against being fired? A company won't fire a good worker, then they lose money and high quality product.

If they succeed in their strike who pays the price? We do. Production companies will just fork the difference to us. When they pay writers more, they will just charge more for companies to advertise on their site/show, those companies will then raise prices on their products.
That 4% extra writers want on DVDs will mean a 4% extra price raise on DVDs.

Unions are just a business, and now they are asking us to help them for free for what the get paid to do. I will have no hand in that.

Any up-and-coming writers, this is your chance to break into the business.

Ugh. Stupid management, always screwing everything up, and screwing everyone over. In fact, this whole mess is supported by the terrorists. Here's how I reached that conclusion.
Reality TV shows (which, by definition, have no writers) take no intellect to create, and no intellect to watch. As I learned when I was a pro wrestling fan, if one does not use his human intellect in his free time, he will not be able to use it when it really counts, such as at the voting booth, or at his job. This means that, as judged by their actions, Americans are indeed stupider, and it thus contributes to a world opinion of Americans as idiots. And since the terrorists want to run America over and destroy her, they certainly don't want America having allies, and so you can say they gain power from any increase in the negative perception of Americans. Therefore, al-Qaeda wants more reality shows on TV, rather than relatively intellectual (yet still entertaining) fare such as The Daily Show with Jon Stewart or The Colbert Report, which, as you all know, look at social issues from a humorous perspective, and get people interested in what's going on in the news. So they support management in not meeting the writers' demands, since they see that, once the writers have a powerful force behind them, management will give in to the writers' demands for proper credit and payment for their works being shown online. The writers, of course, actually have an artistic interest in what they are fighting for, rather than simply a monetary interest like those idiots in management have, so they will not back down. Osama bin Laden is probably sitting in his cave right now, laughing at how his most diabolical plan since 9-11 is coming together...
BTW, Family Guy, an equally evil terrorist plot (for the same reasons), and WWE programming, which is stupefying the trailer parks for its own gain (but not as part of an al-Qaeda plot) both have their own writing teams which are non-union, so they continue to come out with new episodes, while great comedic gems like South Park, with social messages, are affected by the strike. The terrorists know exactly where to hit.
Though CNN and other 24-hour news networks remain up, they are only interesting to people who already have an interest in world or national news, and so, though their viewership will not be hit, there will be no increase in viewers coming from less-real but more-comedic "news" programs like The Colbert Report.
So to any of you who may read this, please support the writers in their hour of need, and show that, at least to you, are battles against al-Qaeda in Afghanistan are not just a silly bumper sticker. Do your part in the War on Terror. I think the actual post by Tom has the details on how you can do this.

Tom's actual post contains a link to a site explaining the strike, and at the very top of that page there is another link to a petition in support of the writers. I signed the petition, and short of taking to the front ourselves (which I can't do since I'm still in high school, in Pennsylvania), signing this petition is probably one of the best things that we can do. So I suggest that we all sign it, and show those idiots in management who the real bosses are!

Death to the strike!

Response to Writers Guild Strike 2007-11-22 18:14:54

This strike is completely justifiable. Think about it- what if you were working at a high-profile job like that and getting paid less than somebody who runs... say... a local supermarket. I know it sounds kind of greedy, but if other people who work on that same show are living "the Hollywood Life", then there's going to be some jealousy (and rightly so). To show our support, we really need to do a site-wide collab. It would be a great thing for Newgrounds to get some notice, and not only that, it could help the people involved make some decisions.

You know what? I'm going to make a flash this weekend for the support of the writer's strike. I'm going to put my current project, Capture The Flag: Episode 2 on hold. Tom, I'd like to thank you personally for coming up with this idea. I support the strike 100% and now I have a way to show that support!

I think a collab is the best idea, but, we can all make some kind of contest and even design a preloader for it, suporting the writters strike, I totally support them and totally agree how unfair it is that uber talented writers don´t earn as much or at least something comparable in comparison with the asholes that display the scripts, despite acting is just a little part of telling a story.

So lets join, against the actors that could be taking the money most of us would be earning, people of NG support the strike with a flash!!
