Everyone seems to be very skeptical about the idea of spending 400$ for a laptop for a poor child in a third world country and one for yourself. I've noticed when reading these posts that very few of you seemed to care for how you are helping a child find means of entertainment, learning and exploring new ideas. You emphasize on how well this computer will work, or if we should be giving these kids food or shelter instead of this. I myself have already paid the money and have ordered a laptop as my channukah gift that not only gives to me but gives to others because i believe that someway or another this will help them, whether they sell it for the money or use it for the knowledge i won't know, but alteast i helped them out in some way

This is shit, get them water and food and they'll be happy. It's absolutely pointless. They don't need computers, they need to live for gods sake.

Sounds like a great idea!

There is a war going on in you're mind. People and ideas all competing for you're thoughts. And if you're thinking, you're winning.

I'm late to the party, but here goes nothing:

After reading through most of this thread, I'm impressed at the patronizing, uninformed attitude that many of you have towards Africa. First of all, there's a clear difference between UNDERDEVELOPED and DEVELOPING countries. This is a project that's supposed to help children in developing countries. They're not dying of hunger and AIDS and living on the streets - even though they live in Africa (incredible, isn't it?). Children in THAT situation need other kind of help, which they sometimes get, and often don't, unfortunately. But if food and medications is the only thing you ever want to give them, their situation will never change. They'll have to depend on you for the rest of their lives. That's like feeding your children and giving them proper health care, but stopping them from ever learning, going to school, reading newspapers. Would it be surprising, then, that after fifty years the said children would still be living in your house, depending on you? I think not. Anyway, most of you who argue that the OLPC donations would be better spent on food and shelter probably don't donate jack for those purposes either.

Some of the countries that were once stuck in the situation described above are now making an effort (with some degree of help from more developed nations) to improve. Some are in Africa, some aren't. But what exactly makes a country "developed"? Not skyscrapers and restaurants, that's for sure. You can still live like a dog in a skyscraper. Other than the obvious political side (a fair, democratic government), which we can do nothing about (many so-called "developed" countries don't even have a democratic government anymore), the first step for developing a country is educating its people. They need to be capable of performing the jobs that hold together a civilized society - doctors, engineers, teachers, and whatnot. Hospitals have to be manned, advanced agriculture has to be implemented, factories have to be properly built, and I'm sure *I* am not going to move there and do it for them. They have to do it themselves. Wouldn't it be better if they could PRODUCE or BUY their own food and medications, rather than having us dump ours into their so-called black hole?

Now, some of your might argue that just giving laptops to their children isn't going to change much. But I think it may change a little. As a small part of a larger effort, it can be another window through which they can gaze at broader horizons. Maybe these laptops can help plug the black hole, invert the cycle. I'm not arguing that the money wouldn't be well spent in schools or other similar necessities. But I think it's as well spent in these laptops.

Some of you argued that many people who receive these laptops may just sell them for food, but I agree with Tom here - at least SOMEONE will get a laptop. If you just give them food, they can't trade it for a laptop. But if you give them a laptop, they can choose to either keep it or trade it for food. Isn't that better?

Disclaimer: I don't work for OLPC. I don't live in North America. I can't buy an XO - but if I could, I certainly would.

In a lecture I took about humanitarian engineering, we learned about how these types of programs are ineffective and even insulting sometimes.

They skip the first step of actually analyzing the problem (i.e. actually GOING there and asking the locals what THEY need).

Dead.

Response to Laptops for Developing Nations 2007-11-25 18:35:42

@Protected:
Well said.

I think this is a clear sign of progress in aid to developing nations, and broadening the horizons of children there will help everyone out in the long run. Plus, the laptop for self is a clever incentive for people to donate who normally wouldn't.

Response to Laptops for Developing Nations 2007-11-25 21:08:48

Wait, what? You donate enough money to buy one laptop, and then the organization buys a laptop for you? Did I miss something? How do they gain money by doing this?

Response to Laptops for Developing Nations 2007-11-25 21:22:43

I just thought of a better idea for a charity: "Food For Developing Nations!" You donate $400, and they spend the money on food (or really anything that developing nations actually need) and in return you don't get anything (because it's a fucking charity.) It's a rough idea, but I'd say Food For Developing Nations is already a better idea than this laptop bullshit.

Response to Laptops for Developing Nations 2007-11-25 21:34:50

I understand concerns about the donations of laptops over basics like food or for infrastructure improvements. However, when you consider the quality of your life, education and technology play a large role and, I think, really go hand-in-hand. I don't think the laptop people are trying to divert charity efforts away from basics, but rather they are trying to initiate a program that can work on yet another realm of improvements for people who have very little. That Newgrounds is promoting this and that so many of you are responding is proof that the techies might be moved enough to donate technology, in the same way that appealing to religious groups might promote donations of food or shelter.

For those of you who can't afford a laptop donation or are opposed to it, I hope you consider finding another way to donate, rather than just trying to dissuade others from doing so. Personally, I'm thinking of donating a laptop (without the 2nd one for myself) in someone else's names as a Christmas gift for them. These are people who "have everything" and are hard to buy for - - why get them something just to get them something? I think they'll really appreciate this.
