Well, I imagine part of the reason for these competitions is to encourage more accomplished artists to submit stuff to Newgrounds. Without any sort of prize, established musicians aren't going to take the time to submit much stuff for "free", when they could be getting paid for their work. Granted, a $300, or even $500 prize wouldn't even buy a minute worth of music in a commercial production atmosphere, but it still is enough motivation to encourage them to submit.

Complaining about how some people are "winning" more than others is not a good mentality to have. Maestro has said several times he really enjoys competing against the best of Newgrounds because it helps bring out the best in him. When you are up against a high calibur of artists you're going to have to push yourself to new levels to compete, which ultimately makes you a better artist. You won't get far with a mentality of "I want to prevent a particular artist or group of artists from competing so I have a better chance of winning". Make your music give you an advantage, not pointless handicaps.

Also on a sidenote, sure, 3-500 USD won't buy alot in the commercial atmosphere, but remember that noone bought anything here, the audio on NG musn't be used for commercial purposes. If for example The Behemoth wishes to use a song that is already submitted on NG, they must make a contract with the author. The contests are just here to improve the quality of the audio, give ppl a challange and flash authors something more "specific" to use in their flashes! :)
