I suck.

I'm trying to make DnB, but I can't.

I thought it was just a hiphop beat sped up, but I just can't get the sound down.
Fuck me.

Anyway, for all dnb artists, I was wondering if you could type some drum tabs for my help.

Sort of like this:

K 1 5 7 11
S 3 6 9 10
H 1 3 5 7 9 11

where the numbers correspond to the beat position

DnB is based upon breakbeats, meaning bassdrum hits at 1 and 11 signature at 1/16. Howeverm there are lots of varieties of this nowadays... To get the beat right, listen to alot of DnB and try to find out what in the beat that makes it sound like DnB (for example there's quite often a ride-hit that goes in a certain way, how do the tamburine shakes, the hihat etc.). Don't try to find "rules" for what you're making. If you think it sounds DnB then cool beans... Cross check with other DnB artists if you're after "that specific sound" though.

Each tick is a 16th note. The high-hats are playing at steady 8th note patterns. After you get this EASY AS HELL pattern down, you can play the snares on offbeats and stuff like that, and you can easily create some awesome catchy drums from then on in.

Main beat (1)

This is what I do.

Kicks on the 1, 3 and 11. Snares on the 5 and 13. High pitched hats on the 7 and 9. Congas on the 8 and 10.

Kick :1010000000100000

HiHat :0000001010000000
Conga:0000000101000000

1's mean drum sample.
0 means empty.

also set the tempo at 160-185 most of the time, i use 175 usually. You should also experiment with plugins and beat patterns, alitlle variation never hurts.

listen to Pendulum, Aphex Twin for some inspiration. In the portal see cornandbeans, helix6, paragonx9 (dont reccomend), koolfox, bladerunner627, dj-padman1, and me for some royalty-free inspiration. Search the internet for the Rogue analog bass plug-in, it is amazing.

I've been known to dabble a bit in the IDM realm as well :)

I love this topics' potential - posting drum tabs is a great idea and it could result in a nice little repositiory or collective that we could all draw from.

actually, half the fun of dnb is experimentation. I mean, make sure that the beat has a steady flow and all, but there's some really cool patterns out there. I tried switching up the bassdrum on one of my practice songs so that it hit on the offbeat and was covered by a lighter, shortened bassdrum on the on beat. I recorded some hi hats, made two channels, one that I reversed, and alternated between them giving a "scratch" kind of sound.

Snares I usually keep either on the 5th and 11th or 13th 1/16 note. People usually expect something steady with the snares, so too much variation can give you a headache. That doesn't really apply to soft snares though, but I really like snares with a low-ended punch. :D

i like using the softer snares for ghost notes and having a more punchy one for say the 7th and 11th 1/16. as you say though, it's experimentation, go with what sounds good. i don't like too many rules for when i'm playing dnb, i like to keep it fairly open and freestyle.

ive got this dnb i want to jack from ยต-Ziq. Its got the basis of main beat posted by spikrodd but its a bit more juggly. I dont think it will be strait up easy getting the jist of it but i could be wrong. Anyone up for it?

s'true! Kaup Jop used a gabber kick and was played at 225 bpm. DnB is like college: when you experiment, you find something quite entertaining! XD

I went to FYE and found a 3-CD DnB package. Didn't get it, but if you want it, search 3x Drum and Bass. they also have Trance, House, and Happy Hardcore. Good stuff on all of them.

The thing that makes all DnB unique is the unusual drumset you use for the song, like bongos and hardcore kicks or something (oh damn... good idea!). In fact, Experimentation is the only way people get famous and people still listen to them. My friend is making a sick riff for my new song, could take a while to get it... il wait... ...

0 is the sample placement, [] is empty, | is just a mental note... :)
