Slamdance Update 2007-01-18 16:12:06

Sorry for the late notice to anyone in Park City, but we've decided to withdraw Castle Crashers from Slamdance, due to all the ongoing drama and a general feeling that it just isn't worth the trip at this point. The biggest bummer is that I was hoping to hang out with Luis and BoMToons, but Luis cancelled his flight already for similar reasons, so I'll just have to catch up with them later. Maybe Comic-Con in July???

The good news is that I've won back six days to WORK... YAY!

Our next official preview of Castle Crashers will be at the Independent Games Festival this March, in San Francisco.

Wowee! Pointless posts sure are great, huh?!!

Anyways, Tom, could you elaborate on the whole contriversy thing? I didn't really understand what it was from what I read on the site you linked... Is it something about censoring games, or not allowing violent games to be submitted or something?

From what I understand: You guys are against a competition that withdrew a game about the Columbine Massacre? Wtf is wrong with you retards? That's the most fucked up shit I've ever heard. I'm actually familiar with that game, but that doesn't make it right.

Slamdance was probably trying to NOT get a lot of negativity by taking that game out of the competition. You know, since it would offend the 98.6% of people that aren't sick, internet freaks.

Anyway tough luck Tom, but look at the bright side. You have more time to spend with us.

I read the link you've posted but I'm still confused with the whole situation. What I've understand there's was a withdrawel of a capture-the-flag game to protest a game not allowed in, then the game was allowed in but they still withdrew...

or something like that.

So Tom, what's your opinion on the Super Columbine Massacre RPG fiasco?

He felt strongly enough about it to withdraw Castle Crashers from the competition, and not go. So I'm guessing it's something negative :/

The center of drama in Slamdance was from their decision to remove "Super Columbine Massacre RPG" (Often referred to as SCMRPG) from the competition shortly after declaring it a finalist. Several game developers have been withdrawing their games from the competition in protest.

More information on finalists withdrawing
Slamdance's official statement (and fulll list of finalists)

I can understand that you're withdrawing from it to avoid drama. It's really, really unfortunate that Slamdance made this decision, and even more so that the contest has been screwed up because of the withdrawals. My question to you, Tom, is are you withdrawing solely to avoid the drama, or does part of you want to get involved in the protest that other game developers are showing? Having made small games of controversy yourself (and allowing the site to feed off of it), I wouldn't be surprised. It's a shame that they had to shoot down the game despite their license to create.

thank you rage for clearing that up.

Wow, so there's a lot of politics involved in the game developing world, more than I ever thought...

Thx rage. The summary was really helpful.

In any event Tom, you decided what was best and I wish you good luck on your future projects.

MadCow and Quiksand, stop acting irresponsible please, take it in to a PM convo, no trying to moderate, just don't want to see 50% worthless posts on a decent topic.

They should not have really nominated it in the first place as they should have known it would cause some controversy. Still, it's the authors right to freedom of speech, it was the people who nominated them, their freedom of speech, the sponsors freedom of speech which has caused the kerfuffle.

I dunno, maybe freedom of speech leads to more problems than a dictatorship?

that's the problem with democracy. Everybody have their right, even though they may piss some people off. If you try to please those who are pissed off, others who want to protect their right get pissed off.

Either way, people are gonna get pissed off, and it's a lose lose situation.

For some reason I haven't been in the mood to make any official comment on the whole Slamdance fiasco... I think I've just been too busy and worn out lately to get too wrapped up in it and I'm tired of eDrama.

I was disappointed in Slamdance for pulling Super Columbine - it's an amazing game and deserved to be there. At the same time, I sympathized with Slamdance because I deal with so much shit here on Newgrounds (although we've lost endless sponsors and have never pulled a submission due to complaints from advertisers, so in reality, I shouldn't sympathize too much).

Anyway, while I disapproved of their decision, I still wanted to support their effort to have an independent games festival. In the end, though, I feel not much effort was made to do damage control on the situation. The whole event is marred in controversy and most of the other developers won't be there, so it seemed time to withdraw, rather than spend six days celebrity-spotting.
