I know probably not, but that's what I ussually see around here in calgary, it is not a fact, just a generalization which will have exceptions :)

Some customers, though. Whew.

However, seeing these kinds of stories, I always try to be extremely courteous to people who have to deal with the public--whether kind or nightmarish. :)

The sad thing is that it goes both ways. Yeah, you will have customers being assholes, but it is also true that you will have CSR's (Customer Service Representatives) being assholes, specially the ones in government offices...

But seriously, the service industry, no matter what branch or position, is not for somebody without patience. Think about this: You are serving something and have been asked the same stupid question 500+ today. But every customer that asks that question does not know you have been asked that before. It is not fair for them if we snap at them for this or we are rude just because we are fed up or we have had a bad day, if we have had a bad day and treat them like that, now we'll make their day a bad one, and in turn, they will make somebody elses day worse. You'd be surprised how little it takes to make somebody's day better for the rest of the day, just by being polite to somebody.

Half the time, things happen because of misunderstandings :)

I know. There was a slight mix-up in someone's order where they got the wrong soup. Although we were slightly busy, I took the time to get them the soup they wanted, and was still smiling. :)

Something I forgot to mention:

My Dad was at Wendy's one day, waiting in line when some guy goes back to the counter and says that he didn't want "short fries" and he had a tiff with the cashier and then manager. Then he told me, I was like wtf?

short fries? as in broken pieces? he did know fries are not prepared in the restaurant right? they ussually come prepackaged (I am of course assuming most fast food restaurants are like this, can't imagine the workload if they did had to manually cut fresh potatoes everyday...)

what exactly was he complaining about?

I don't know. He might've gotten mostly "short fries" in his box but they were all too small for him lol. It's crazy. I used to work at a local baseball stadium and had some crazy stuff go on but not as crazy as fast food.

Good to know there are other McDonald's managers on NG. I hate the store that I'm at, because I didn't even choose it--my now fiancee's dad had the interview all lined up for me before I even moved (from WI to down south). It's really sad because I'm working on my master's, and they're trying to sway me to stay by claiming that I could use my degree in some capacity at the store. It's really pathetic because there are people who've worked at the corporation who've done just that... my store manager has her master's in Nursing and instead of using that degree, she's at McDonald's :(

Response to Memoirs of a McDonalds Employee 2006-11-02 14:09:32

This is something that needs to be read by everyone! Kind of makes me WANT to work at mcdonalds (not really. They get paid minimum wage, and have to stand for about 8 hours straight.)

Problem is, unless you are aiming for store manager, there is no future after 1st assistant. A friend of mine actually was 1st untill he got promoted to store manager, he has been doing it for about 2 or 3 years, but he wants to finish his studies, and even though yes, they could be used in McD, why would he? then of course, they won't even accept demoding them so he can have more time to finish studying (why would they let him better himself and leave them?)

It is still a good place to gain experience though, like I said before, if you can survive McDonalds, you can survive anything.

I used to work as a parking attendant at a water park, and our boss was an old racist white guy. If you pissed him off he'd say something stupid. Like, we have employees come from other countries, and when our boss would get pissed, he'd say something like: "You're not in malaria anymore, speak English".

I get that now and then, but not seriously, they just bug me 'cause i'm from Panama and sometimes will misspronounce something, but they don't mean it abusively like your boss.

I heard that about a year ago there was a gang fight at the water park, and when the cops came the old man yelled at the employees to not say anything. Two years ago he was sued for yelling at a disabled person for parking in the handicapped spot. He slammed the door on this leg yelling: "We don't want your kind here!!"

My stories aren't as good I guess, you'd have to be there

nah, you are welcome to write them here, just com'ere and post.

First page, sixth post from the top.
I explained it there, and if you read the first post, I also said you don't need to tell me McD sucks, I work there, so I already know, but it still has some good things.

Anyway, you might want to change your sig, the one you are using (and the others made by the same guy) became ban worthy offence a while ago, just a tip.

anyway, I actually work today, i will post another story tonight if my internet doesn't get moody, I use a laptop and I get the "limited conectivity" message now and then, it has been doing it the past couple of nights, so if I don't come tonight, I'll do it tomorrow.

I've done my time in fast food.
Arby's
1 full year
I'm never going back.

These stories are all funny, and are all true, at all fast food places.
It might as well be any of us telling them.
Keep on representin'.

Question 1)
What warrants the cook to spit in the food? Are there strict guidelines, does it happen often, how can I tell if my food has been spit in?

Question 2)
Did you know ordering a McChicken meal and 10 pc Chicken Nuggets costs exactly 6.66 everytime? Have you ever had a customer change the order or freak out over the total?

I mentioned before this will vary with the restaurant. In the one I work, nobody ever does that, even if it is a very annoying customers, and if they ever tried, I would fire them. Also, restaurants up here have been redesigned so the kitchen is very open, you can see what is going on there most of the time anyways, not to mention that nobody really takes the time to spit on a burger in the middle of a rush.

Again, this will probably not hold true to ALL McD's, but for the most part it will. Bad areas of the cities will produce different kinds of people.

It depends on where you go. Prices are not the same in every McDonalds, here in Canada, it varies because some provinces don't have provincial tax, just regular GST. I have had this number come up a couple of times, but nobody freaks, they just find it funny and eventfull.

Also, the one i work at for example is franchised, so our prices may vary a little bit more too.

Hearing all these stories I think fast food must do something strange to people. I was sitting in burger king the other day eating a meal, when this homeless looking old man walked in. He walked around each table where people had left and hadn't finished their food and started scooping all of the fries into a carrier bar. Then he sat down at a table took out his false teeth and placed them on the table next to him and started drinking something somebody else had left. Then if I hadn't already been put off my meal enough, he stood up, put his teeth back in, and then pissed himself. Nobody actually said anything to him. He left, and then a member of staff just came over and started cleaning up the piss. I couldn't finish my meal strangely enough!

There's a place called the "Kid's Cove" where we cooked everything on an open flame and catered the birthday parties. Some of the parents were so freaking rude. "Where's my food?!" is basically all we heard, especially when we had something like 300 people to cook for at one time (and the guy on the grill was slow or whatever).

A couple of complaints were "My hamburger is red inside" and it was barely pink (I'd just give them another one) we didn't seem to have a thermometer, but when it's in a warmer, it dries out so there's no happy medium.

I also sold coffee, worked in a concession stand because they had a huge party and they needed someone to dispense the sodas, so I did but the soda was freakin flat (I told my Uncle who worked for Pepsi at the time and he had someone out there to fix it or whatever). I also sold popcorn and cotton candy, philly cheese steaks that were kick ass...

When I was selling the coffee though, I had the asshole card vendor next to us. Some of the bosses were clueless too and they would always complain if we sat down for 5 seconds, yet they were just standing there doing nothing or talking (2 of the bosses didn't care, especially because I had back surgery but the others were complaining).

The coffee maker also broke third season (I was there seasons 2 & 3) there was a bad valve or something for the water shut off, and it was opening night! They didn't bother to test our equipment beforehand! So guess who had to run up and down the stairs to the kitchen for the suites?! We took turns but it was chilly that night (the end of April) and we had the longest line! We couldn't make the coffee fast enough and we ran out of hot chocolate mix too.

Then when they finally fixed the valve, the freaking cappuccino maker shit the bed and one of the asshole bosses comes up to me (he must've been in accounting or something), "it's either buy a new car or get a new cappuccino maker." I wanted to say something but it wasn't our fault that our equiment wasn't working and that it was all out for the elements in this cart made of MDF that was also falling apart!

The only thing nice was that a lot of the people that I was working with were great. So for $6 an hr the first season I worked there and then $6.25 the 2nd, I quit mid season because of all of the bs. My boss was fine but there was just too much going on that made no sense.
