You can still keep the hyphen in the middle, just not the ones on the end.

There's one little problem:

Most people put those hypens and dashes because the regular names were taken by other people, sometimes inactive and sometimes active.

Now I know you said site contributers can get their name but what about just BBS regulars or people who just want that name. The BBS is where the name is most important, that's where you see it the most.

Response to New Username Standards 2006-09-09 12:19:26

I noticed this before. Tom, that doesn't mean those of us who already have hyphens are going to lose them does it?!

How is it for the best? Other than letting some flash artists change their names, how is this supposed to be better? We should have the ability to have whatever names we want.

Response to New Username Standards 2006-09-09 12:21:56

I'm very thankful that my name is simple and boring. :)

Interesting update Tom.

I agree, as long as characters like <^> etc aren't allowed, Newgrounds usernames will never look too bad. Originally I was going to be Paradox when I signed up, it was taken, so I made something else, which I can't remember. Then when I came onto the BBS and noticed everyone with hyphens in their names, I followed.

Good times. :(

Well, if you're going to force update, I suppose I should change soon. Even though I'm nobody important, can I still PM you? I'd check to see if Pyro or Pyr0 were active but the server is under extreme load.

Over the next week I'll try to accomodate everyone who contacts me. I want to make this as painless as possible for people.

That sounds really good. Finally Bahamut- can get the name he've been wanting to have for so long. =)

Response to New Username Standards 2006-09-09 12:28:07

Damn, this new thing is a bit of a double-edged sword! It does make it invalid for those with -------------------- in there names, but ruins names of actived members who share the same name with older mambers that do not sue their account anymore!

Well this was unexpected. I glad to see they are making exceptions for more notable users.
I wonder if this will cause some clearing of inactive users that havn't been on the site in years.

Response to New Username Standards 2006-09-09 12:31:21

Dang, looks like my name that has remained unchanged scince I first starting using NG is going to have to make a tiny alteration. :( sad am I...

Two reasons instantly spring to mind..

1. spaces suck in usernames. If you have to validate something in a URL through a link that contains a username, you have to provide URL encoding workarounds, which don't always work too well through e-mail clients.

2. That would defeat the point in changing names so that they only contain alphanumerics and hyphens. More on WHY we're doing that later.

Not that it affects me , lol.

We have, in the past, removed accounts from users who signed up and never did anything after their sign-up date. We will probably do more pruning in the future. Right now, I am re-allocating the names of users who never did anything after joining NG.

I like being arab_freak. I don't think changing my name to arabfreak will do justice. Why have hyphens and underscores removed? I want to stay as arab_freak, I think I have the right to have it that way.

Be arab-freak and GET OVER IT. It's not the end of the world, and the benefits to everyone conforming to a cleaner method are far more rewarding than an underscore.
