Wetton, Howe, Downes and Palmer.
I heard they're pretty bland.
Well whoever said that deserves a fucking good thrashing!

I love their music for Dario Argento's films. I have the soundtrakcs to Profondo Rosso, Tenebre, and Suspiria.

Indie Kids should be sent back in time to replace the Nazi's at Nuremburg as their crimes are far worse.
Judge for yourself, is this stale?
How can anything with people from King Crimson, EL&P, Yes and Buggles be stale?

Personally, I think it's horrible, but then I hate most 80's pop.
And it's not prog by any standard.

also omfg crimso is rehearsing with Levin and two drummer one of which apparently doesn't suck unlike Mastelotto! (the new drummer is the dude from porcupine tree, I think)

Yeah, the guy from Porcupine Tree joined up. I wish Bill Bruford would come back. He's amazing.
This place needs a healthy bump.
At this moment, I'm listening to "East Hastings" by Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Mellowest stuff I've listened to, to date. Not sure if they qualify as progressive, though. They're songs are very calm and happen to switch between being abrupt to complete silence. Not sure if that's enough to call them progressive. Anyways...
I started listening to HEAVIER prog, as I needed it after my complete transition into prog from black/death metal a year back. SikTH and Protest the Hero seem to be working pretty good for me.
Also, what's everyone's thoughts on this "mathcore" sub-genre? Progressive, maybe? These bands are a lot more chaotic then any regular progressive metal bands. Songs seem to go all over the place - Breaks in the middle of songs and solos are very common.
Anybody ever heard of "The Sound of Animals Fighting"? Not sure where to place this band.
Definitely a progressive rock band but that would be an understatement for this particular band.
VERY unconventinal in their song structures. Far more sporadic then any mathcore/progressive metalcore band I've heard in a while.
I've also catched up on some regular ol' Prog Rock - The Dear Hunter.
Great vocalist and their songs are a lot more "easy listening" than most prog rock bands nowadays.
A cross-mix between Indie, Post-Rock and Avant-Garde mixed into one.
Any Mindflow fans here? Anybody ever heard of them, too?
Their A LOT like Pain of Salvation as both bands seem to scure off into a more emotional and melodic approach, but still retaining that heavy metal feel.
Some quick ones:
Thought Chamber reminds me of some Post-6DOIT days of DT.
Mind's Eye is a very poppy-progressive metal band. Worth checking out if you're a glam/power metal type of person.
Triana is an old spanish band that mixes progressive rock elements with flamenco.
THOUGHTS?!

Mellow in what way?
I like mellow music, so I may be interested.

SikTh are cool :).
Their newer album is a bit bland, but their debut is cooool :).
Good musicians.

Considering Progressive music tends to be characterised by unconventional time signatures, chord progressions and whatnot math-music (I don't like the suffic 'core') ticks all the right boxes.

Why would you want that?
THOUGHTS?!
Yes please, four.

Ever heard Porcupine Tree's 30 minute epic "The Sky Moves Sideways"?

Indeed. Too bad they split just a while back. ;"(

Indeed. I usually just label any "obscure" progressive (redundant?) band "progressive" on my media players.

I liked their sound a lot more back then.
Nothing wrong with their latest albums, though. Just not what I got used to.

Wasn't it just Mike and Justin that left?
I thought the others were just looking for new vocalists.... or a vocalist.

Obscure is something I tend to associate with Avant-Garde.
Whats the opinion on Muse? I believe they're a Progressive band. Most people don't.

According to Blabbermouth, they broke up because of a few factors, mainly because they couldn't find a replacement for Mike and Justin. Also, it seems their commitment to future projects just wasn't there.

They have a distinctive style of alternative, almost post-rock feel in their songs. I don't know if I would call them a progressive rock band at heart... Maybe a post-progressive rock band, if such a thing ever existed.
A contact on AIM (and fellow minimanjapan.com member) got me into Battles. Does anybody else listen to them? The band has Ian Williams, who used to be in Don Caballero (anyone who doesn't listen to Don Cab already simply must check them out).

I have Mirrored and EP C/B.
I haven't listened to either in full, but Atlas is one of my most played songs :).

Well, let's pick this up...
So, lately I've been listening to a lot of Progressive Metalcore, AKA Mathcore.
Protest the Hero, The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Human Abstract.
Bands seem a lot more chaotic in the aforementioned genre.
I don't know, guess, since I dropped most of the death and black metal bands I used to listen to, these bands are to fill in the spot.
Also, anybody ever hear a band called Blotted Science?

Yes. Jarzombek's side project :).
I prefer Spastic Ink though.

i've yet to properly get into this genre. all ive heard so far is a few obscure bands like keelhaul and whatever i've heard on the free compilations that come with terrorizer magazine. might give em more of a listen soon.
RZZZZZZ
Guys! Check out Estradasphere! It's progresurf gipsy jazz-metal
you can listen to some of their songs in the site.

I uploaded some audio of mine, its something I did for my coursework (day of deadline - thus some sounds (ie, guitar/violin, etc) sound poor).
I suppose it is quite Proggy. Thoughts?
Linky!
I'm about to listen to what you made, Nev.
By the way, I only really know three progressive bands. I probably know more, but these are the only ones that I have on WMP. (I actually have a bunch of songs from all three bands.)
Porcupine Tree
Pink Floyd
Radiohead
I want to find moarr bands. I read that "The Mars Volta" is a good prog band in earlier pages, so I'll check 'em out.

I'm pretty sure Radiohead isn't prog.

They're more of a experimental psychedelic rock band. But, whatever, they're good.
Seeing as how you like the heavy-ish prog stuff you should check these out:
The Dear Hunter
The Flower Kings
Green Carnation
Deadsoul Tribe
Neal Morse
Also, remember to check out Amputechture and Frances The Mute from The Mars Volta.

No!
Deloused and Frances.
Fuck Amputechture.

I have their only album so far, the Machinations of Dementia. It's awesome technical music.
Love progressive rock. If it wasn't for Neil Pert, Rush wouldn't be where they are today. Awesome band!! Rush and Pink Floyd are my favorite rock bands.

Isn't that all they're done though?

That's why I said "I have their only album so far".
Just wondering... Has anybody heard Colors?
Latest album by Between the Buried and Me.
I have to say, this shit is pretty 1337.
Yeah, I mainly listen to blues, old rock, classical, and some modern prog-ish acts (like the polyphonic spree, taranella, etc.) but I write alot of progish music for my Music Composition Major at Ball State. I just finished up a score in both C#minor and A/F major for piano, guitar, viola and violin, and im adding a rock organ part later if i can find a good organist (please no pee-pee jokes). What Would you recommend to me to get a good fundamental grounding in prog-rock culture?
Sadly, He was only ever " Just a halfa-sammich," just like the lady at the Wendy's drive throu had said, all those years ago...
Oh yeah, and my bass player is a big Rush fan, as well as a killer double Bass player, so ive listened to alot of rush.
