Blow the whistle! 2002-12-05 18:45:24

So, we removed the vote score and prevented reviews from being viewed for submissions that are still "Under Judgement" the other day. This was primarily to stop users from casting votes on submissions, on the basis of votes that had already been cast on those submissions by other users. Some movies with high filesizes were getting ridiculously low scores, more often than not because the first user who had come along to vote on the movie would see the size and think, "Hey, big filesize, slow download rate. I'll give it a 0."

Lots of users complained about not being able to see the reviews. Main reason: the reviews inform you whether the movie you're voting on might contain malicious scripting, explicit content, or stolen material.

Some of these complaints were/are justified, but voting on a movie based off another users' opinions, whether they be average-vote based or review-based, is not - some people vote unfairly (i.e. without viewing the submission) and some people have been known to LIE in reviews, leading to unduly poor scores!

So, we thought of another way. You will now find a "Blow the Whistle" menu for movies that are still "Under Judgement". If you're logged in and suspect a submission of violating the Portal Guidelines, you can "Blow the whistle" on it. If enough users who have similar opinions to you, the submission you're voting on will temporarily be removed from the Portal Population, whilst it's reviewed by Administrators.

However, please do not "Blow the Whistle" on all of the new submissions you come across. We're logging everything that goes on with this stuff - any users who repeatedly blow the whistle on entries that don't fall into the criteria specified in the reports will be ignored in subsequent checks.

A quick note on how to use this: Click the report that suits which Portal guidelines you think the submission's breaking once. The window that pops up might take some time to load in peak traffic.

A couple of "asides":

1. We know about the movies that are "Under Judgement" not showing up in the listing file for the Portal not showing up. This will be fixed in the next few days.
2. Access to reviews for submissions that are "Under Judgement" will be restricted to the authors of those movies (from the Grounds Gold menu) in the next day or two.
3. I will be making some changes to the database in the next few days and will have to shut down voting for between 5 and 60 minutes. I'll most likely choose a quiet time of the day to do this, server-time wise. This is just a little pre-emptive warning :)

As always, if you have problems, list them in this thread. If you get an error, copy and paste the error - please be as informative as you can be! :)

I love this new feature!! NG just keeps getting better every day!

I'm too damn lazy to make a decent sig right now.

excelent idea.

I was about to suggest it also. There should be a way to get rid of all these "Films" wich only contain sexual material, or demeaning material, or stolen material, one thing you should add is a button for resubmitted material that people resubmit after they change the name of the movie.

If you could add that link the system would be nearly perfect. Good work.

How is 'excessively pornographic' a problem worth removing a movie over? And what the hell qualifies as "excessively pornographic"?

Oh, I wanted to add, there should be a special thing like a reward, a button, or some sort of count for how many bad films you remove.

Good Point, slow download rates, deserve to get a 0 in trateing, but it depends on how good the movie is... so, i would give it a 3 Tops

While the system is good for "Blowing the Whistle" I do think you need a confirmation message before it goes through when you click. There are many accidental clicks on the web. I assumed such and clicked one to find I reported it! Oops! There should be a message such as, "Are you sure you want to report this movie/game for being Stolen?" and you click Okay. This would prove to be more precise and accurate.

thems is some pretty good ideas, the portal will be much more efficient for all the flash animators out there, i hate the fuckin voters who ridicule and judge, when they dont even know how hard making flash is

Nice idea, but what's to stop people from abusing the movies they hate?

Response to Blow the whistle! 2002-12-05 19:17:12

Great idea!! I like it. This is a good solution to the problem of not knowing if a movie is stolen or containing annoying pop-ups. Glad the problem is now fixed.

Response to Blow the whistle! 2002-12-05 19:21:08

can you add a whistle blow link for offensive material also, or unapropriate..

is it also posible to add a raiting system simular to the movie system used on hollywood films?

All in all its a great system.

Are you guys insane? Isn't there a limit on the number of updates to a site? I mean, c'mon! What about the many hapless members who havent logged on in a few days? Will they recognize the place?

Im thinking you guys had a list of new years resolutions for 2002, and you are just now getting to them all. Am I right?

ANyhow, the place is still the best thing on the net. So take a break every once in a while, will ya? (But don't put off the server upgrade!) :))

You totally misunderstood what he said.

maybe you could do something to allow people to rate their own movies... like G, PG, R, etc... and maybe have them say whether it has swearing, gore, sex, etc... if they lie about it, THEN someone can blow the whistle. just a suggestion. this way people can see whats in the movie before watching it and they cant complain.

i do not like that idea of taking of the reviews wat so ever

I just want to commend lil' jim for all the work he has been doing around here on his own time for free. Just letting you know it is appreciated despite the multitude of imbeciles who post to bicker about everything.

you REALLY dont belong on this site. your username should be "Yay For Censorship!" oh and it wont let me post unless i type more so ill just say this: maybe make the blow the whistle link a pulldown menu instead of a bunch of links. also, why do you still have the "verge of death" color code thing? i hope this is enough text.. here goes!

This "Blow the whistle" sounds interesting and a very creative way to adress the problems that arised from the removal of the reviews. My only question is what is the overall turnaround rate for this to happen? In other words how long does it take for it to be removed after "the whistle is blow".

by jove you're right! SEVERAL strange little nutsos LIED and spread untrue info about my game Geek Fighter.
One person said something that was completely the opposite of the truth. this feature he complained about and said didn't exist, WAS in the game. and he said it wasn't. wierd people eh?

Anyway, good frickin job on EVERYTHING Liljim!
The Portal has never run this good since the good ol' days of NG! And all the new features like the hiding of the score are really swell.

*raises beer stein for a toast to Liljim

I was never really here.
