Warning: Fake Tom Email 2005-03-17 09:49:20

One of the authors with content on the front page received this email, apparently spoofing my email address as the sender:

From: TomFulp <Tom@newgrounds.com>
Date: Tue, 08 Mar 2005 19:09:36 -0800
Subject: Congratulations Newgrounds Present you with.....

Your Flash was a good peice of work. :)

Heres a Action Script Generator

-Used to generate scripts to make games and flash movies involving action scripts. Makes flash mx action script much easier. ;)

Enjoy hope to see more of your work soon.

There was a 46k file attached called "flash". It is most likely something malicious. Please note that I will NEVER send anyone random files such as this. If you receive an email from me with a file attachment, don't open it until you specifically know the context of our communication!

Is it possible for the hacker to be arrested for interfering with a site's authority or something like that?

On note, Tom. This isn't the first time I've heard of this happening, either. Apparantly, a while ago, people were recieving e-mails from 'you' asking if they wanted to be BBS mods. All they had to do was send their username and password. Dodgy dealings, indeed.

it is possible to send emails under other addresses, and i guess this is what the sender did, or at least hope.
thanks for the time to warn us, tom.

Seems like a too complicated way to spread virus to me.

If I'd go through that kind of hastle, I'd atleast try to hack someone to gain some profit
(like I'd do anything like that, I couldn't hack shit...)

I love the way they don't even bother to check their spelling, grammar or punctuation and write emails totally out of the style of a genuine NG email. If you'e going to start a virus, you should at least do it convincingly. :(

Help, I'm trapped inside this guy's signature!

You are gonna inform the FBI about this?

Inform the FBI about this? lol. Yes, the FBI will definately investigate a virus mail someone on the internet sent. Since that is their main priority and they do that with all the 250 million virus mails that are sent every week

Whoever did this didn't actually use Tom's email address, they just changed the "From:" field to 'tom@newgrounds.com'. When you send an email, the 'From' field isn't even checked to see if it's a valid address, and if you know what you're doing, you can type anything in there, including someone else's email address.

now talking about fakes, a few days ago some hotshot submit his work here at NG. well nothing much unusual but when i checked out the author's profile, its almost exactly the same as the real tom profile, excpet for that votting power, submittion list and bbs post no. i realise it immediately and blam his shitty work(his work was really shitty). just to remind people here not to fall into that trap

The FBI would be more concerned about kiddie porn.

I got a fake email from ozcar@newgrounds.com, i replyed and the real ozca didn't know what it was about, it seems these fake emails are becoming quite common.

Response to Warning: Fake Tom Email 2005-03-17 10:30:36

I'm glad this guy had the right idea to contact someone about this. This is also part of the reason why I hide my e-mail address on the site, too many immature people with rage/malicious intent.

Though I wouldn't open anything, even from you, Tom, if I hadn't asked for it in advance.

Seems to me that you wouldn't send something like that to someone, if it wasn't already on Newgrounds Flash FAQ. I wonder if there is anyway at all to find out who did this, beside local and state authorities.

Response to Warning: Fake Tom Email 2005-03-17 10:32:53

That sucks I wouldn't know who would do that

Response to Warning: Fake Tom Email 2005-03-17 10:33:18

lol, I wouldn't be so stupid to open that.

I saw it too. He was level two and I was like, "wait, isn't Tom level nine?" I blew the whistle on it, but I don't think it got enough attention to be marked.

But your secret love-mails to me are real aren't they?

Response to Warning: Fake Tom Email 2005-03-17 11:12:24

A while ago someone using your (tom) e-mail address and someone using Wade's e-mail address contacted me on msn, I made a thread about this. They said they were going to sue me ( obviously for something I didn't do). they said they had your permission to do this for a joke on the newgrounds members.
I didn't believe them. They are now both blocked/deleted.
