I assume people who want to submit their flash will do that as soon as it's possible again. So I could expect a rush of new submissions immediately after the downtime.

Roger dodger. LOAD BALANCER AHOY!

ATTENTION AUSTIN, TEXAS

I am flying direct from San Fran to Austin, Texas, where I am speaking at the South by Southwest festival. Although registration is required for most of the conference, my speech is FREE, so come on down if you are in the area! I will be speaking at 7:30PM on Friday, March 11th.

EXACT INFO:

"The SXSW Interactive Festival is hosting a FREE presentation from Alien Hominid developer Tom Fulp at 7:30 pm on Friday, March 11. This presentation occurs on the top floor of the annex of the Austin Convention Center. Enter at the 4th and Trinity corner of the building."

The SXSW Schedule is available on-line, as is more Information about the Game Developers Conference and the Independent Game Festival.

Remember, both events are FREE, so come say hi! I would especially like to see people in Austin who can come ask questions! I'll feel more comfortable if there are NG fans in the room.

Hm. Well, I'm in Houston, not Austin, but my parents' house is out there and I might be visiting that weekend ANYWAY (it's the weekend in between my sister's birthday (the 8th) and my father's birthday (the 14th), so....).

Friday at 7:30 PM, eh? And no registration is necessary? Hm. Okay, sure. It's been awhile since I've been to Austin during SXSW, anyway. 5 years, maybe. I saw some films that were playing at the UT Dobie theatre during SXSW in 99 or 00 or sometime around then.

I can't guarantee it, but I'll do my best to be drive over on Friday afternoon, Tom (egad, Friday afternoon rush hour in Houston... hmmmm... maybe I should leave Friday morning, come to think of it). It'd be great to meet you in person. Are you going to have a NG meet and greet after your talk? #;-}>

Same festival. It has three portions: Film, Music and Interactive.

Yeah, there's only ONE SXSW, Lokken. #;-}> I remember first hearing about it back in the 90s when it was pretty big in the music scene here in Texas. i.e. How many bands from Dallas are going to be at SXSW vs. how many bands from Houston vs. how many bands from wherever else. I think it was mostly known for the music section back then. The film and interactive portions have grown in reputation since then.

I'm anxious. This, definitely, will require an additional post or *GASP* two on Tim's part.

If NG ever gets some extra bandwidth (yeah, right) I think the search NG profiles feature should come back. I miss that.

At 3/5/05 02:32 AM, -Hood- wrote: If NG ever gets some extra bandwidth (yeah, right) I think the search NG profiles feature should come back. I miss that.

A lot of people would love for the user profile search to return.

A lot of people would also love for the BBS text search to return.

Neither of these is going to automatically happen because NG upgrades from 500 mbps to 600 mbps, though that IS a nice boost for flash DLing.

See, the reason those two searches are offline, and have been that way since 2004 or 2003 or whenever... is that both of them being available is horribly taxing on the database server. The strain doesn't come from the amount of data that is pulled from NG to your computer... if it did... then extra bandwidth would be nice, yes. But compared to 5 meg flash files that have to travel from Newgrounds to our computers, the overall MB involved is VERY VERY LOW, okay?

No, the thing that they're hard on is the database. See, when a request is made, the database server is tasked with having to INTERNALLY search for the requested user profiles or BBS posts, and this is a somewhat resource-wasting thing. The badness is compounded by many many many dozens of users who use those features. Thus, the searches were taken down. Too many hits on the database in too short of a time, and not a crucial enough reason for the searches to remain in place. Only the admins, as a result, have them available.

They're trying to prevent unnecessary and unneeded drains on NG's computers, which would slow down the site FOR ALL OF US (you know the error messages you used to get a lot of the time while trying to open a flashpage so you could view the flash and vote on it? That's a database error, often caused in the past by the profile search or the BBS text search)..... So ANYWAY... next time you think about joking about the BBS text search or the User Profile search being down... or about seriously asking liljim when they'll come back... please... DON'T. He's answered these questions dozens of times before. Believe me, I've seen him answer it for people. I think he's really... really...

...

... really.... really.... really tired of having to explain it by now. Okay? Thanks for understanding, or at least trying to.
