More Flash Games are back this week!

Last week I reflected on our progress with site features and ongoing Flash preservation efforts.

Ruffle had a busy week since that post! Here are more games that are now working:

If you want to test a game that doesn’t currently have Ruffle enabled, add “?emulate=flash” to the end of the URL. If everything appears to be working, link to the game in this thread and I can switch it over to use Ruffle!

Our custom date-range browsing is a fun way to explore older games. For example, here are all of the featured games from the year 2013. Many of these can potentially have Ruffle enabled and a lot could also use modern thumbnails.

If you’d like to help create hi-res thumbnails for classic movies and games, we could use your help in the Thumbnail Crew thread. We have both old content with missing thumbnails, as well as old content with small thumbnails that benefit from hi-res replacements.

It’s interesting to think that some day, the majority of Flash content will be working via emulation and all the thumbnails will be updated. I wonder what sort of massive preservation project will be necessary next?

Unrelated but go watch this:

There’s a lot of great stuff on the front page, don’t miss out.

Simply amazing. Here's to another era of Flash history being uncovered and made accessible again!

We’ll have to create artificial preservation projects to scratch the itch! :P

It's choppy and the audio stutters, but carrot juice now runs!

I like to imagine moving on to more long-form content, articles and retrospectives that tie things together in history context and stuff.

Waiting for performance to improve there but it's still mindblowing that it works at all!

I like the sound of that! Couple freshening-up projects like that come to mind myself:

  • Some flashes link to dead websites (shut down outgoing links for the submission OR direct to the internet archive version of the page if it exists? Don’t know if this is possible)
  • Some flashes still have unlicensed music pre-copyright issues, and it’s probably possible to “mod” in same-sounding or parody music that’s usable (via free flash decompiler), but might be too revisionist? But it’s also a good idea to get rid of that unlicensed music, so idk)

Swapping out music would be an interesting project, we've attempted it some already but it's definitely time consuming. The biggest problem is that for FLA files that set their sounds to "Stream", all of the audio becomes a single sound file in the SWF. So for example there are movies where the song plus every sound effect are a single audio file, meaning you'd have to recreate all the sound effects over a new song to swap it out properly.

If there were people down for doing that sort of thing, we could totally swap files out though.

Don't Look Back! I remember this game so fondly. The music, the atari styled graphics. I'm so happy.

I'm still establishing a body of work on here but I would love to help with this. Not to sound like a cocky jerk but I'm pretty good at writing and have a good time doing it. Working on a new version of NG Mag or just being able to contribute to a long form section of the site would be highly enjoyable for me :)

I've read the history/wiki sections plenty of times, I'd be down to help with those as well!

I didn't know that the first game was from Terry Cavanagh, until the appearance of VVVVVV became Don't Look Back, I thought that it was exclusive for the phone I saw only in the Play Market, but when I played here, I stuck here for a long time with interest
