Since December we’ve been testing builds of Ruffle that add support for WebGPU and features like blend modes and bitmapdata for Flash. Some computers were unable to support WebGPU but weren’t properly falling back to WebGL, resulting in a blank screen. As of last night, this problem appears to be resolved! Thank you Dinnerbone and the Ruffle team for all the work on this front, thank you nosamu for making test builds and thank you @53xy83457 and others for testing on their devices.
If you’re on a device that doesn’t support WebGPU, these new features won’t be available to you (yet) via WebGL but Ruffle should continue to work otherwise. There have also been a number of performance improvements!
Some games that now work with blend mode and bitmapdata support:
Ruffle introduced limited AS3 support last year, something that will continue to evolve this year. Some games like Haunt the House are working reasonably well but have features like Medals that aren't supported yet. Here are some AS3 games that are working:
A number of collabs that utilized AS3 are working:
As are many movies that relied on AS3 V-Cam:
Yesterday @FlameZero released the unfinished third episode of Megaman Zero - The Last Cataclysm. If you were waiting for it since 2007, the wait is over and it's running via Ruffle!
Looking forward to seeing what is next with Ruffle! We're hosting a Flash Forward jam to create new Flash games and interactive movies. The deadline is March 26th and we have over $3,000 in prizes! We're also crowdfunding for bigger prizes, if you want to encourage more Flash devs to come out of the woodwork and make something.
