Flash Emulation (Ruffle) Update

Since December we’ve been testing builds of Ruffle that add support for WebGPU and features like blend modes and bitmapdata for Flash. Some computers were unable to support WebGPU but weren’t properly falling back to WebGL, resulting in a blank screen. As of last night, this problem appears to be resolved! Thank you Dinnerbone and the Ruffle team for all the work on this front, thank you nosamu for making test builds and thank you @53xy83457 and others for testing on their devices.

If you’re on a device that doesn’t support WebGPU, these new features won’t be available to you (yet) via WebGL but Ruffle should continue to work otherwise. There have also been a number of performance improvements!

Some games that now work with blend mode and bitmapdata support:

Ruffle introduced limited AS3 support last year, something that will continue to evolve this year. Some games like Haunt the House are working reasonably well but have features like Medals that aren't supported yet. Here are some AS3 games that are working:

A number of collabs that utilized AS3 are working:

As are many movies that relied on AS3 V-Cam:

Yesterday @FlameZero released the unfinished third episode of Megaman Zero - The Last Cataclysm. If you were waiting for it since 2007, the wait is over and it's running via Ruffle!

Looking forward to seeing what is next with Ruffle! We're hosting a Flash Forward jam to create new Flash games and interactive movies. The deadline is March 26th and we have over $3,000 in prizes! We're also crowdfunding for bigger prizes, if you want to encourage more Flash devs to come out of the woodwork and make something.

Really pleased to hear the news about blend modes in Ruffle. I can confirm from my end that the medals popup in AS2 submissions appear much better from what I last remember.

Nice job, glad to see this update adding more flashes to the roster.

I did notice that some of my older flash wont play the mp4 version and go straight to ruffle even though I prioritized the mp4 version in the edit, any idea what's going on there?

Exciting update! It's been fun to see the Ruffle dev process in the Discord.

Where do you currently want us to list additional games that work? A few of the games I mentioned previously now work mostly, if not completely, and I found others that worked.

I think I enabled Ruffle on all the previous games you noted. You can still post new ones in the Ruffle Testing thread but you're also welcome to note them in this thread.

I've enabled Ruffle on Synapsis, does it work for you now or are you still noting some issues?

At some point the ordering stopped affecting the default file, I think that might have even been intentional around when Flash support officially ended. We should get it going again now that Ruffle supports the majority of movies.

Synopsis is one of the previous games that now works.

The other game I may have mentioned was Digital Upgrade:

It fully works.

Most of the Liquid Measure games have not changed since I mentioned them. I will provide a full list of games on the other thread.

New Isaac challenge accessible via emulation. Terrain like rocks and pits appear for split second at the start of the room before disappearing forever. Permanent Curse of the Lost. Better keep a pencil and paper handy and really memorize those room layouts.

Your computer is falling back to WebGL and not using the new features that are currently only supported via WebGPU.

Congrats to the admins of NG (for the planning, inspiration throughout the years on the internet) and the programmers of Ruffle, for making Flash emulation possible. I look forward to when the programming progress for the AVM 1 is ActionScript 1 and ActionScript 2 is at 100%. I was able to play some old flash games, not just on here, but on other websites.

I also know that it takes time to program the coding for AVM2, I would wait until both Language and the API hit at least 50%. I haven't one new game that works with Ruffle yet.

All in that, keep up the great work.

Very nice updates! My games seems to have a somewhat unique problem.

iu_870039_5183590.webpI remember having problems playing my game at different resolutions and that something went wrong with collision detection when it was resized. These guys are clearly detecting the slope part of the way down, but miss it only after detecting it successfully for several frames. I don't really know what the problem is.

I've made a ticket for this in the Ruffle bug system. I know hitTest inconsistencies have come up but not sure where things are at with that.
