Art & Audio Scouting Update is Live

Art and Audio scouting is now instant vs invite.

For anyone not familiar, the Art and Audio Portals default to showing entries by artists who have been scouted (approved) by their fellow artists. This is done to maintain a minimum quality threshold, since both Art and Audio can be easily flooded with low-effort / low-quality entries that make it hard for casual visitors to discover artists who are making a real effort.

Scouting has traditionally resulted in an invite being sent to the artist but this leads to various levels of confusion and lack of response, so we’ve now changed it to happen instantly. Scouted artists will also receive an introductory message that hopefully explains things better than before.

When you get scouted, you gain the ability to scout other people. This ability can be revoked, however, if you exercise poor judgment with who you scout. For example, sometimes someone will get scouted and the main Art Portal listing will suddenly be filled with rough sketches or sloppy MS Paint doodles, at which point that person will be de-scouted and the person who scouted them may lose their ability to scout other people.

If you have scouted people, you will now see links to those lists on your user page, in the infobox under your level data. We opted to cap the total at “10+” because we didn’t want to make this a stat people try to maximize. The goal is quality over quantity when it comes to scouting people.

To be Art scouted, you traditionally need to have uploaded at least four pieces of art, since it’s easier to catch art thieves that way. We’ve now added the ability for Art mods to scout people with less than four pieces of art, which will be useful during events and contests when a lot of new artists show up with just one piece of art. This will help to get them aboard quickly and minimize any ongoing confusion.

Halloween Voting

Our Halloween Spooktacular entries are in and it would be greatly appreciated if you could vote on as many as possible! The voting score doesn't determine the winners but it does help guide the judging process.

I'm already scouted on the art portal so it doesn't change for me

Is that why I lost that ability? Dammit. I saw it before but it went away for me. I didn't think I made poor judgement calls.

I got "Rock Garden" frontpaged.

dunno if this has been answered already , i suppose it's somewhat relevant although i haven't seen any of it here (Yet) - what is Newgrounds' policy/stance on AI generated art in the art portal? I only ask because Twitter and Pixiv have been drowning in it and it's become a huge issue. It seems less likely to happen here, but it's only a matter of time until someone does upload something from "stable diffusion" or other learning algorithms.

iirc it's been answered before that AI art is not allowed here, although it doesn't stop people from trying

We haven't been allowing AI art and when people try to upload it, we let them know they can post it on their blogs but not the Art Portal and so far people have been mostly understanding. Here's how it's worded on the Art Guidelines page at the moment:

"AI-generated art is not allowed in the Art Portal. This includes using tools such as Midjourney, Dall-E, and CrAIyon, in addition fractal generators and websites like ArtBreeder, where the user selects two images and they are combined into a new image via machine learning.

There are cases where some use of AI is ok, for example if you are primarily showcasing your character art but use an AI-generated background. In these cases, please note any elements where AI was used so that it is clear to users and moderators.

Tracing and coloring over AI-generated art is something best shared on your blog, as it is much like tracing over someone else's art.

Making art from scratch that is inspired by an AI piece is ok. Here are two good examples: Maiden of Flames and Hermin. Both pieces reference the AI art they are based on while being original pieces in their own right.

Bottom line: We want to keep the focus on art made by people and not have the Art Portal flooded with computer-generated art."

glad you guys are on top of it already. Just discovered PIxiv now has a required yes or no question for AI generated art whenever you upload something. Not the direction i was hoping as in my opinion AI art is just photobashing and art theft mixed together.

Small but very smart decision to cap the scouted users number at +10, that would've been a chaotic scenario with statwhores scouting more people than they'd need to.

I hope this can be reverted if necessary.

There's a very high chance GD players will turn this well intended update into a problem for the AP.

The system still requires a scouted artist to scout someone new; the recipient previously had to accept an invite rather than have it auto-accept as it does now. It's still in people's best interest to not scout illegitimate accounts once they themselves are scouted.

Hey, I'm just wondering why my game, A Halloween Cat-Tastrophe, is no longer showing up in the Halloween Collection (https://www.newgrounds.com/collection/halloween2022) on Desktop? It was there for several days, but it seems to have disappeared. It does support touch controls, and it seems to show up in the list on mobile. However, it is playable on desktop and has been on the Desktop list up until now. Is this a bug? Is there something I should do? Just checking.

With AI imagery about to flood the internet in the next year or so, this seems like an opportune time to figure out how to actually implement that speedpaint feature that's been spitballed in the forums. If not that, then at least encourage and teach more peeps how to record and attach speedpaints beneath their art submissions.

This just made me realize... People are gonna train AI to create speedpaint videos.
