Top Movies

🏆 1st - $400

@RGPAnims and crew organized one of the ultimate collabs; inspired by WarioWare but centered around Newgrounds. Will we be getting to play this in the future???

“FulpWare was just perfect in every way. I know it's gotten a lot of attention already but it's very well deserved attention. WarioWare was the perfect canvas to combine all of these artist's styles and all of these pieces of Newgrounds history into one chaotic (and yet digestible) package! It's so fun to play ISpy with each entry, catching all the little references hidden in the background, it's almost like its own Newgrounds history quiz/lesson. I found myself sending it to friends who don't even really use the site, and each person was in awe of the level of polish, charm, and joy exuding from each entry. Every frame has passion and respect in it, and every artist attached to it, from the music to animation, deserves all of the love in the world.” -@thecooldrawingguy

🏆 2nd - $300

@SmileGrenade and friends told a Pico story that encapsulates Pico past and present in a fun way. I especially enjoyed the various cameos from the Pico 2 demo and the ending was perfect.

“The earnest voice acting, tight narrative, and fun loving attitude endeared me to this film instantly, and for one of their first projects like this, it's insanely impressive. The dialogue and acting is super fun and honestly very natural sounding, and the animation and style is super fun to look at. It oozes an independent spirit to me; the art never stops being appealing and every eccentricity regarding its acting and style makes it very endearing to me! I love how it mixes a really natural narrative flow with extremely dark humor, it feels like something I would have LOVED watching on this website as a kid. They told a really full, complete story in five minutes with a style, sense of humor and energy that feels wholly unique and a lot more realized than a lot of other creators. Really friggin' fun, oddly sweet, occasionally dark, and stylish and punchy. I was a big fan of this one!” -@thecooldrawingguy

@Stradomyre has hit it out of the park on numerous animations in recent years and this is no exception. The original song by @sleepFacingWest elevates this to a whole new level.

“END DAYS WITH THE TANKMEN is awesome. It creates such a great tone, mixing the dramatic and hilarious with Stradomyre's distinct and inspiring art style and creative voice. The way they draw is such a joy to look at, and everything about this film, including how it's comedic and action moments are animated, could have only been done by them. They are such a talent, and I'm glad they submitted something this year!” -@thecooldrawingguy

When I woke up and saw this movie by @Toony and crew, I thought I was having a fever dream. The seamless blend with Roger Rabbit, the dancing kiddbrute and THAT SONG, this movie is on a surreal level all its own.

“A GINGER WALKS INTO A BAR has a great style to it! A good amount of fun referential humor and the bar setting give this movie a really great atmosphere, complimented by the shading and music. We, the viewer, are the disgruntled Pico, growing up and looking at the world that keeps moving around us, reflecting on and reliving the past. It's got a really nice atmosphere and all of those things I mentioned are communicated very comedically and charmingly. It's great!” -@thecooldrawingguy

@TheBlueHatted, @Fifleo and @Kiwiquest have created a vs fighter that shows serious potential, with beautiful visuals and fun juggling combos.

“I'm picky about my fighting games, but I was intrigued the moment I started this one up! Visually appealing and well-animated (love how the Pico cast look), attacks feel satisfying to land, an interesting blend of both HP and stock, and great presentation overall. Putting the Bear's house smack dab in the city (like in my fanon) is very based.” -@Dungeonation

“Pico's Brawl Arena I think fits the spirit of Pico Day most (has unique animations and style relating to each individual character's personality and back story) and is executed well. The art and animation really shine here and I'm excited to see more from this team.” -@BoMToons

🏆 2nd - $400

@jefvel pushes the limits of on-screen characters with a game that brings the entire NG community together on a battlefield. Your new obsession!

“The concept is cool to pay tribute to gaining 1k followers on NG and the gameplay feels pretty novel to lasso up your team and manipulate them in an RTS-style, but with a creative new RTS mechanic. This is the first year where I've seen a lot more Pico Day love for the NG user base rather than just the characters from the site's historic content (emphasizing "everyone" from the site slogan). This game demonstrates that tonal shift in Pico Day.” -@BoMToons

“I'm surprised this is the first I've seen an upgrade-die-repeat loop on a unit management game like this, it seems like a no-brainer for good times, in hindsight. I would like more unit control features, but it's just so fun to see my horde fight theirs. Newgrounds needs more unit management games.” -@GeoKureli

🏆 3rd - $250

@DefaultLabs, @chiptami and @ScepterDPinoy brought Pee Man out of retirement for a new adventure! It’s great to see the late @Ben-Spurgin still being celebrated to this day and of course I have a soft spot for Pee Man, having made a previous Pee Man Game with @PsychoGoldfish. The judges loved it too!

“The difficulty in this is absolutely perfect. hard enough to kill me dozens of times but easy enough that I kept thinking I can beat it. I'm still trying to beat hard mode. The Game Over music has no right being that catchy, wtf!” -@GeoKureli

“The mechanics tie into the source material really well and it's neat to see that story in an olskool Pico-8 format. It's very well polished for what it is and is easy to pick up and play, which I think is important for a web game.” -@BoMToons

“This game truly encapsulates frantically playing Space Invaders while needing to urinate. The art style of Pee Man, with its neon colors on black, works perfectly with pixel art, and the game is a nice surge of adrenaline.” -@Dungeonation

🏆 4th - $150

@Stepford, @Andyl4nd and @milkypossum smashed Pico Day with this mega-roster platform fighter set to a killer soundtrack.

“NG Stars continues the "everyone" theme, pays some huge tributes to the NG users as well as the NG content. It's kinda fascinating to me that people's user icons and online personalities are now being translated into actual characters with stories and signature fighting moves. I can tell it was planned to be huge in scope, and the artwork is super charming.” -@BoMToons

“Packed with NG names and utterly chaotic in its simplistic controls. Seeing what everyone's attacks do is pretty fun!” -@Dungeonation

🏆 5th - $100.01

@larrynachos got really ambitious this year, with an online multiplayer 1v1 archery game! The launch didn’t go as well as hoped but the potential is huge and we want to reward the effort that went into making what is here.

“Lots of risks were taken while still trying to integrate the source material in a pretty deep way. I had some issues where controls were unresponsive, but the in-game chat worked (my opponent walked me through some stuff) and I was eventually able to move around and face off against a real-time opponent. I just want to applaud the audacity to do something of this scale.” -@BoMToons

Special Mention

SHRIMP-OS was a big favorite but because it isn’t as on-theme as other games and wasn’t originally being made with Pico Day in mind, we’re treating it more as part of the broader Pico Day festivities. There’s a ton of depth and love here by some of NG’s top people, though; you definitely gotta spend time here.

“I played for half a day and I feel like I've only seen 1/3rd of the total game. Bimsy alone would have made my top 5. It's amazing how cohesive all the art is while parodying entirely different factions of the internet.” -@GeoKureli

“The whole experience essentially makes it an exploration game at heart, and with a whole lot to explore including more games where the contrast of arcade action with the exploration keeps it fresh and engaging the whole time.” -@3p0ch

“Just a dang rabbit hole. Quite the technical feat to create a whole entire COMPLETELY USABLE OS in the browser, in GameMaker. Hats off to all the contributors creating the next generation of home and work PC tools. I don't think I can pick a favorite "useful application" and I expect shrimpcoin mining podcasts by older shrimp to be popping up left and right now.” -@Dungeonation

"A very colorful yet chaotic soundtrack with great mixing, and really sticks out. Very creative choices when it comes to melodies, structure, and somehow isn't all over the place in a bad way. A strong game soundtrack that makes you want to mash buttons." -@ThatJohnnyGuy

 "maxxjamez and thiccburger are no strangers to collabing with each other, and they always make banger tracks together. This echoes the true essence of late 90's hip-hop and has some real soul and good vibes to it, not to mention great mixing. Another great highlight is the effort put into the lyrics with NG culture references, AND putting the source material in the hyperlinks in the text if you click on certain words. The frustrating part about Pico Day is not being able to give prizes to even more entries. The turnout this year was so phenomenal that we have entries that could have totally won Pico Day in the past but didn’t even make it into these lists. I dislike the feeling of leaving people out and causing disappointment so much that it makes me question even having awards for events like this, but I know awards and prizes are also a big motivation to participate. Curious to see how this event evolves in the years to come!

Thank you again to the judges and thank you everyone who voted on and reviewed entries. It can be really hard to rank such varied entries and community feedback is helpful on that front.

The frustrating part about Pico Day is not being able to give prizes to even more entries. The turnout this year was so phenomenal that we have entries that could have totally won Pico Day in the past but didn’t even make it into these lists. Explore the movies, games, art and audio to see what I mean! I dislike the feeling of leaving people out and causing disappointment so much that it makes me question even having awards for events like this, but I know awards and prizes are also a big motivation to participate. If you didn’t win something this year, just know that your entry contributed to making this Pico Day one of the greatest! Maybe even the greatest?

If you won, please fill out the address form on NG for payment. It includes a field for a Paypal email if you have one. If you worked on a team, you can also PM me with a breakdown of how you want prize money split. I'll ultimately chase people down but it helps if you beat me to it!

I was enjoying my Sunday night (and actually trying to finish this Tankman Skittles art), this very good news suddenly popped and sent butterflies in my tummy. What can I say? THANK YOU AND CONGRATS TO THE WINNERS TOO hahaha pls accept this quick sketch hahaha. This year's Pico Day piece was fun and Im now looking to improve my next piece (animation prolly hahah no promises) , Im sincerely looking forward to next year!
