I think this : GU - General User
TU - Teen User
MU - Mature User
AU - Adult User
would be a good alternative or Kortex's idea. The one I thought up was : Sparkler - Everyone
Firecracker - Teen
M-80 - Mature Audience
Dynamite - Adults Only

Then the other ratings system you have to watch out for is the MPAA.
With everyone sue happy nowadays, its like tip toeing through a minefield to make sure you don't zig or zag the wrong way.

It's not that big a deal, they could be way more pissed off

Response to ESRB Headache 2004-07-08 10:10:49

I say:

Red= Adult
Orange= Mature Teen
Yellow= Teen
White= Everyone!

^_^

Okay, here is a simple rating system that everyone will understand:

Tween (TW) - age 11 or younger, basically nothing to worry about.

Teen (-M) - age 12 - 16, basically immature themes but thats NG's target market. The -M represents a negative mature level or immature theme/content.

Adult (+M) - age 16 - 20, basically adult themes for real mature people.

Anything above adult (FU-ESRB), barely legal and your parents would freak and Wade would have to have a watch to see if NG will allow it or not.

I don't see why ESRB is concerned about the ratings on your site ESRB is always known to have black and white letters and squares for the ratings and you do not. But if you have to I suggest maybe
Public- Everyone
Invite only-Teen
I.D. Required- Mature
Private- Adult
You can alter this if you wish and I only put in the dashes to show what each one means. If the ESRB complains about this rating system then they have lost their mind.

Level 1 which used to be "E":
F.U.CK. (For Understanding Children and Kids)
level 2 which used to be "T":
S.H.I.T. (Suitable and Highly Interesting for Teens)
level 3 which used to be "M":
D.I.C.K. (Deemed Inappropriate for Children and Kids)
level 4 which used to be "AO":
P.U.S.S.Y. (Probably UnSuitable for Small Youth)
That oughta show those rat bastards!

I think using the tank for NG ratings would be a good idea.

For everyone : Tank with flowers
For teens : Tank shooting a cork bullet
For Mature : Tank shooting real bullets / a missile
For Adults Only : Tank with a nuclear explosion.

Well, that's just my idea.

I don't know why, but that word pisses me off.

Screw lawyers. Tom should just change it because we need his ass in front of a computer working on Pico 2 and other revolutionary/addicting/suicidal influencing flash games.

I don't like the idea of ages but the colour scheme sounds cool since nobody looks at the ratings anyway.

Maybe you could just put the ages, like 13, 17, etc. You don't really need the ratings. Just take those off and keep the violence, nudity and shit on there.

What about something similar to the Home Land Securety warning levels:

Why don't you ask ESRB if it's OK if you still use E, T, M, and A for the ratings but you don't put them in little boxes.

Thats hillarious what if we got ESRB to use that as a rating system then they would go out of business and we wouldn't have any legal problems.

First of all, it is a shame that it has to be changed. I would say for for:

General Audience
Ages 13 to 17
Ages 18 and up

But, keep the descriptions of each, like excessive something.

While you are at it, you could change the voting, 1-5 thing. It is old...

How you doin?

i did wonder about that....

i figured it was just similar... could they really sue tho? their not losing money to it are they?

actully if you think about it, that would be a pretty sweet way of telling how things are good or bad
Green = Everyone
Blue = Mild scenes
Yellow = Moderate scenes
Orange = Explect scenes
Red = Holy crap this is so much vilonce, swearing its un-fucking believeable!

hahaha, that works lol

get rid of the ratings. people are going to watch all of the movies anyway, so the wisest thing to do is to toss the ratings alltogether.

Response to ESRB Headache 2004-07-08 11:10:30

Not true. I watch moost of the movies anyway, but if I'm around family or other young children, I want to know what is i nthe movie before I watch it.

I don't know if this has been mentioned or not, but for the rating system, it might be possible to use a small mercury thermometer, with the four or five levels involved, and the mercury rises with each more adult ranking. For example:
E-About 1/4 of thermomter filled
T-Just below halfway up
M- About 3/4th's filled.
Ao- Filled completely/ or overflowing thermometer.

Those are just my ideas.. Maybe it'll be put to use or not.. I dunno.. but it's a suggestion!

GU - General User
TU - Teen User
MU - Mature User
AU - Adult User

this one you did seems to make the most sense.. i'd go with this one.

I thought about something original for NG.
So here's mine:
NG>0 (All)
NG>13<17 (Teen)
NG>! (Mature)
NG>18 (Adult)

Response to ESRB Headache 2004-07-08 11:28:54

screw the esrb. they only said they demand you change them. the ones you made up were kinda corny, so i say stick with the one we have now. if your going to change them, I demand you give me all your money and give me all access to Newgrounds database! :P

The reasons I say that are as follows;
1. The ESRB has their "stamp of approval" on their rating boxes.
2. The ESRB's rating boxes are very plain looking, while the rating boxes on Newgrounds are much more colorful and stylish.
3. The ESRB's rating boxes look nowhere near as cool as the rating boxes on Newgrounds.

Maybe that's why they're getting so uptight over this 'rating box' stuff, because they're jealous.

So true!! Those bastards at the ESRB just want more publicity. Just tell them to screw themselves!! Besides, it seems pretty lame that they're doing this stuff to a website rating system!! Don't they got other things to worry about? Like losing their jobs for being so stupid!! I mean, c'mon, it's just a rating system! Who could give a damn if it's similar!! HELLO!!!! Note the word SIMILAR, mean not exactly the same!!! Those ESRB jackass can just go back to smoking each others poles!!!! Or maybe they're just doing this because they're bored of that!!!!!!!!! XP

DrAtomic's Rating Suggestion:

AA = All Audiences
TA = Teen Audiences
MA = Mature Audiences
17A = 17 & Older Audiences (Adults Only)
