So I got drinkin', which got me thinkin', the internet's a big place, huge even! There's over five-billion pages shooting through these sub-aquatic cables and so many of us choose to confine ourselves to just four or five websites, it's absurd!

Well I had a thought and here's what I've thunk, I thought why not dedicate a thread to crawling around the internet every now and then and sharing our findings! I tend to do this anyway every once in a while so why not make a game out of it with my fellow forum rats?

Now, here's a few suggestions to help out!

  1. If you can find anything good through Google then more power to ya, but in my experience they tend to bury the cool shit under all the Silicon Valley crap. The search engines I recommend for this activity are DuckDuckGo and Wiby. Why? Because unlike Google, DDG sorts by relevance instead of popularity and Wiby is more of a curation of obscure websites than an actual web-crawler, plus they've got a random page button, like what Google used to have before they sucked.
  2. Another tool worth using is Neocities, while a lot of it is crappy personal web-pages, sometimes you'll find something good in there if you dig deep enough.
  3. The Wayback Machine is also a great thing to keep in mind if you ever come across a 404 page, just pop in the URL and be instantly transported back in time!

Rules:

  1. Don't go using this as an excuse to advertise your own site, this is for digging into the depths of the internet, not pimping out your super cool list of fonts or whatever it is you put on webpages.
  2. No porn... Please?
  3. Full blown independent websites are preferred but if you find something really good, and I mean REALLY good buried deep in the normie-net "Youtube, Reddit, etc" then go ahead and throw it up! Just make sure it's a seriously deep find so the thread doesn't get filled with memes everyone's already seen.

Okay, everyone got that? Good!

I've already got a couple in mind for my first entry, I've just gotta find the URLs. Until then, let's start diggin'!!!

I found this pretty cool website on the interwebs, you've probably never heard of it, it's called Newgrounds dot com???

1: Kinda surface level I guess but I found this cool wiki while looking for some inspiration for a comic I thought of. It's all about different cultures' mythologies and whatnot!

2: This one's cool, less because of its contents and more because of how it's run. They use a private server that runs completely on solar power. They've got a ton of neat little articles about low-tech environmentally friendly projects and stuff too, so if that sounds interesting then give it a look!

3 but not really: And I had another one about these secret passageways in the great pyramid, but I can't remember the URL and I can't seem to find the original webpage. It was really in-depth and well written too so I'm really bummed out that I can't find it.

Should've bookmarked it, damn. Oh well, lesson learned.

http://radio.garden/

Want to listen to any radio station around the world? Here's your chance.

http://libgen.ru/

Great if you want to get textbooks or other literary resources without supporting shady companies/individuals. Domain changes quickly due to obvious butthurt publishers, but the general name is Library Genesis / LibGen.

https://archive.ph/

Alternative to Internet Archive. Has pretty fast loading speed and can bypass certain restrictions from websites, although it's not as popular or complete as the archive. Based in Europe.

And to all my music producer friends out there:

https://vst4free.com/

Aggregator site for a ton of free plugins across Mac, Windows, and Linux spanning from the 2000s to present day. Includes links/downloads for instruments, effects, and DAWs. If you want to find some free resources but don't know where to start, here is the best place.

This is where I personally started looking for plugins and it really helped me get started on my musical journey, so I have them to thank for that.

Speaking of free plugins—

https://vital.audio/

Free wavetable synth. Don't let me tell you about it—just open the link and take a look.

I can't really enumerate a lot of interesting sites I know of, but yesterday I found this video of a guy showing us multiple interesting sites, go check it out!

It's dangerous to browse the BBS alone! Take this!

Damn, how's that guy got so few subs?

This is some of the best presentation I've ever seen and the first few sites alone are fantastic!

Definitely subscribing to this one.

They have a lot of interesting stories, including in podcast form that are entertaining as hell. One of my favorite stories is about this Bear who served in the military. It's called. Private Wojtek’s Right to Bear Arms

The internet archive is hosting (through emulation) a lot of classic flash content, some of it has been on NG before.
