Today’s Drawing Tablet Recipient
Today’s tablet recipient is @Dungeonation!
What you see there is a Flash game made in 2020, with ActionScript 2 so it works with the current version of Ruffle! Dungeonation illustrated with a tablet in the past but this year everything he’s made has been with the mouse. With a new tablet, Dungeonation can focus more and the art and animation side of his work!
After receiving the tablet, Dungeonation made a donation to NG to go towards a Flash Jam. We’re currently discussing the logistics - it would be ideal to require entries to be compatible with Ruffle, which means they would have to be made with AS2 and avoid features that aren’t currently supported. It can be hard to get a copy of Flash with AS2 support, so we’re not sure how many people would participate.
So here’s the question - if we had a Flash Jam where you were tasked with creating interactive content using AS2, is that a jam you would participate in? Reply in this thread! It would be great to see some old pros turn up to make something new.
Today’s Featured Flash (without Flash)
@ImpendingRiot and @Hyptosis sent players down the rabbit hole in 2009, with a dark twist on the classic tale. Alice is Dead went on to become one of the most popular point and click adventures on NG.
About the Drawing Tablet Giveaway
Newgrounds is hosting a 2020 Drawing Tablet Giveaway, inviting artists to apply for the chance to receive a drawing tablet. Applications are still open, however you must be US-based (tablets are sent directly from Amazon) and your chances will greatly improve if you have examples of your art or animation here on Newgrounds.
We’ve received generous donations from @Egoraptor, @AnonymousAlchemist, @SinclairStrange, @RonDMC, @SaucySaucepan, @Afro-Ninja, @Jonas, @NCH, @Sabtastic, @Squidly, @MSGhero, @Rarykos, @Straqt, @kleinerjunge, @DevAesthetic, @NickSenny, @MrChambers, @53xy83457, @AKA-38CAUTION and @Wegra. As a result, this will be our biggest tablet giveaway ever!
About Flash Preservation
Most of the content shared on NG nowadays isn’t Flash; you can share your HTML5 games and any sort of original animation you’ve made in video format, as well as art, music, voice reels and podcasts. As the original Flash Portal we also host a lot of classic and occasional new Flash content.
Newgrounds sponsors the development of Ruffle.rs, to run Flash content in the browser without Flash. Flash will be removed from browsers at the end of the year but thanks to Ruffle, we can enjoy Flash forever! Ruffle doesn’t support everything yet, which is why we have Newgrounds Player as a desktop fallback until it does.
Ruffle was created by @Mike as an open-source alternative to the Flash plug-in, free of all the legacy problems associated with Flash. Lots of smart people have gotten involved with the project and you can sponsor it with money or help as a Rust developer.
For the remainder of the year, I’ll be making regular posts highlighting both drawing tablet winners and classic Flash content that is now supported by Ruffle.
