Drawing Tablet #10 and Flash Jam?

Today’s Drawing Tablet Recipient

Today’s tablet recipient is @Dungeonation!

What you see there is a Flash game made in 2020, with ActionScript 2 so it works with the current version of Ruffle! Dungeonation illustrated with a tablet in the past but this year everything he’s made has been with the mouse. With a new tablet, Dungeonation can focus more and the art and animation side of his work!

After receiving the tablet, Dungeonation made a donation to NG to go towards a Flash Jam. We’re currently discussing the logistics - it would be ideal to require entries to be compatible with Ruffle, which means they would have to be made with AS2 and avoid features that aren’t currently supported. It can be hard to get a copy of Flash with AS2 support, so we’re not sure how many people would participate.

So here’s the question - if we had a Flash Jam where you were tasked with creating interactive content using AS2, is that a jam you would participate in? Reply in this thread! It would be great to see some old pros turn up to make something new.

Today’s Featured Flash (without Flash)

@ImpendingRiot and @Hyptosis sent players down the rabbit hole in 2009, with a dark twist on the classic tale. Alice is Dead went on to become one of the most popular point and click adventures on NG.

About the Drawing Tablet Giveaway

Newgrounds is hosting a 2020 Drawing Tablet Giveaway, inviting artists to apply for the chance to receive a drawing tablet. Applications are still open, however you must be US-based (tablets are sent directly from Amazon) and your chances will greatly improve if you have examples of your art or animation here on Newgrounds.

We’ve received generous donations from @Egoraptor, @AnonymousAlchemist, @SinclairStrange, @RonDMC, @SaucySaucepan, @Afro-Ninja, @Jonas, @NCH, @Sabtastic, @Squidly, @MSGhero, @Rarykos, @Straqt, @kleinerjunge, @DevAesthetic, @NickSenny, @MrChambers, @53xy83457, @AKA-38CAUTION and @Wegra. As a result, this will be our biggest tablet giveaway ever!

About Flash Preservation

Most of the content shared on NG nowadays isn’t Flash; you can share your HTML5 games and any sort of original animation you’ve made in video format, as well as art, music, voice reels and podcasts. As the original Flash Portal we also host a lot of classic and occasional new Flash content.

Newgrounds sponsors the development of Ruffle.rs, to run Flash content in the browser without Flash. Flash will be removed from browsers at the end of the year but thanks to Ruffle, we can enjoy Flash forever! Ruffle doesn’t support everything yet, which is why we have Newgrounds Player as a desktop fallback until it does.

Ruffle was created by @Mike as an open-source alternative to the Flash plug-in, free of all the legacy problems associated with Flash. Lots of smart people have gotten involved with the project and you can sponsor it with money or help as a Rust developer.

For the remainder of the year, I’ll be making regular posts highlighting both drawing tablet winners and classic Flash content that is now supported by Ruffle.

For a Flash Jam I could make either a soundboard or something like this:

Flash Jam sounds like a good time, I'd be down potentially.

having a Flash Jam is a great idea as kind of this flex on people who thinks flash will die at the end of the year. However I’m actually focusing on Pixel Day project currently. Plus learning 2 languages at once wouldn’t settle well lol

I'd also be interested in participating in a Flash Jam, as I have the software for AS2. But I'd be going into the language and interactivity for Flash in general as a complete novice. I could take this as a chance to learn some basic functionality and do some reading.

Hey Tom I had a idea for a holiday for Newgrounds it's called Tank Day which is a holiday dedicated to Tankmen by Johnnyutah. The holiday can be on August 16 the day the first Tankmen animation was made

A flash jam? ooo i could try do another dressup in actionscript 2 tho!

Response to Drawing Tablet #10 and Flash Jam? 2020-12-03 13:19:40

Maybe settle for a flash styled jam? Taking inspiration from the quirks of those old movies / games and making something faithful to that, but compatible in modern browsers.

about getting an AS2 compatible software nowadays, I´d say pretty easy for anyone who looks for it for like 5 minutes https://animatearchive.neocities.org/

I hope this thing happens!

I'd love to participate in a flash jam! Though the only things I've ever made were really simple point and click games. If you have any resources laying around that can teach you how to do cool stuff in AS2, be sure to put it out there before or even along with the jam for us newbies/rusty users!

(btw if anyone wants to team up with me as an artist or for me to do any grunt work, lmk!)

I was thinking about putting together a quick AS2 cheat sheet for the jam if it happens, all the important stuff to know for putting something together

I like Newgrounds a little too much.

I've been meaning to make something a lot simpler and original that I can actually finish. I just need to know the length of time, what is and isn't allowed etc

Ruffle is looking good, one problem I have noticed is with the Newgrounds AS2 API, the medals don't work with Ruffle emulation I don't think, atleast, they weren't on my game. But hopefully in the future!

I can't hack AS3, I can't do gotoAndStop in it (AS3 gotoAndStop (newgrounds.com)). Yeah I'd be up for a AS2 Game Jam

A Flash Jam sounds cool, but I don't think a lot of programmers outside of NG still tinker with Flash, especially with all the "End of Life" talk floating around the internet these past 2 years. If it happens, I could see it being a small, self contained Newgrounds competition celebrating the program's online legacy.

However, if it goes really well, maybe we'll see the start of small Flash enthusiast communities. Game makers who still play with the program even after decades of being defunct, similar to how there are still communities making games with RPGmaker 2003 and the DOOM engines.

I'm actually working on re-releasing some of my old AS2 games on Steam, so I'm still working with AS2!

I probably wouldn't make anything new for the jam though, as I'm already working on a lot of stuff, as usual. But I am interested to see if anything comes out of it.
