They were some of the last browser versions to support Flash properly for one reason or another.

Was this video player in the playlists already not working for you? For example can you watch videos here?

Just want to check in case it's anything specific to how it's implemented on view pages.

Videos don't play on that page.

Looking pretty good! Frame by frame view is pretty welcome for us animation nerds.

At first I was a bit surprised with the video playing above while I scrolled to see reviews, but it's good to have the option to toggle it if you're re-watching something while reading reviews.

Is your biggest issue with the UI elements, or the missing site skin, or is it related to the size and how it stays at the top of the screen (which can be disabled)?

It's a combination of all of those, briefly:

  • Default size is huge. It's like I've accidentally gone into full screen, which I don't do for anything in a browser ever. If I want full screen I'll pick it myself
  • Automatic resizing/stay on top is incredibly annoying. Some people may like it, but it's the sort of behaviour I only ever see with irritating video adverts
  • Lack of integration with the existing UI. Might be a work in progress that'll be fixed if/when the site skin is merged into things, in which case fair enough, but just having a huge grey bar where the video plays that's inconsistent with everything else on the page looks bad. Even little things like having the title of the movie above the movie as it was before and still is with games would help:

iu_173902_37436.jpg

Just something little like that (have the width of the title bar be dynamic dependent on the video sizing maybe?) would make a huge difference. Switching fix to top off and setting video size to medium helps, but little things like the title of a game being above the game and the title of a movie being somewhere else entirely is a mild irritant.

Probably just me having been here for nearly as long as you have and hating change, but my first thought was either that the site had been hacked, or that someone was testing some Ribbagrounds 2.0 skin, and that isn't a great look

Nice work! Caught me off guard but the ui is really intuitive.

Pausing and not seeing the stupid grey screen is the best part about this holy shit. The frame scrubbing is also neat as fuckkk

Ah. Nicely done! I like it already. Congratulations to the coders!

One bug I presume: On Brave, Mac, the video is not actually scaled to the edge of the window, even with highest resolution. It is displayed as before in just the regular Newgrounds page width.

And one feature request: Aside from the Play-Button after loading, please put a Play-In-Fullscreen button which first goes to fullscreen with black background, then starts playing after a short time delay (.25 to .5 seconds or so) automatically without any overlay whatsoever. That would be pure enjoiyment.

The video player now fills the browser window and will shrink to remain at the top of the screen when you scroll down.

If you don’t want the video player to follow you when you scroll, click the gear button and disable the “Fix to Top” option. You can also toggle Titles in this menu, which is useful when watching playlists.

If you prefer the traditional video size, click the size button to the right of the gear icon and choose the middle option. Medium size with Fix to Top disabled will give you the traditional viewing experience.

The new video video player includes arrow buttons for frame by frame scrubbing, to examine individual frames of animation. This system currently assumes 24fps; we need to log framerates before we can make it dynamic for each video.

You can also now watch videos in 4K when available! Here are some:

https://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/704629
https://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/759557
https://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/758529

To accommodate dynamic width, we’ve removed site skins from video pages. We’ll likely continue this trend with content pages moving forward, so content has more room to breath and doesn’t have to compete with the wall art.

Some more cool videos to watch big:

I've been toying around with the video player, and I noticed on mobile mode, some cartoons display a 3D effect. I have no idea if it has anything to do with the actual video player, since the 3D effect wasn't there before.

I really don't know what to put on here.

I'm impressed overall with the new video player, but can you improve on the preloading aspect of it? I want to watch more videos on Newgrounds, but it gets frustrating when I have to constantly pause what I'm watching and wait for more of the video to be preloaded.

I also noticed a weird glitch with the time stamp next to the progress bar changing numbers as the video plays. I might be get my terminology mixed up, but you can guess what I'm trying to say.

We can't autoplay video with sound, in general no website can do that anymore unless they're a site like YouTube or Twitch, which are on an exclusive whitelist in the browser itself. If NG was a single page application there'd be more potential to do that but until then the user has to click something before the page can play sound.

I guess my only problem is that there's a "glitch" on phones where if you drag the bar, it will then do the same for whenever you're holding or dragging on the page

You might wanna look into the issue with the player always forcefully overriding the interactive version that previously worked a few days ago. Basically without the interactive version you can't access the secrets in this video.

There's a ticket for this one to get addressed, we have more work to do in the crazy Flash / Ruffle / Video space.

How about you set up the html5 player controls and the play button without loading the media.

You can capture the canvas with js and generate a cover for a video when it loads. it would be a separate script that runs when users upload the content. (dont know how much disk space you have to do this tbh)

Then when the user clicks you overlay the actual player on top of everything, and make it as seemless as possible.

Its a shame that NG is not whitelisted, but I get your point, on how restricted you are when it comes to implement features.

Been thinking about that too, that it might be ideal to just show the video player UI from the start even if it doesn't autoplay. The current method puts the big play button front and center and also will be used for launching SWF content via Ruffle, so there would be consistency there. We're also gonna try upping the thumbnail size on there so it fills more of the empty space.
