We released a big update to the Supporter system this morning, adding Stripe as the primary payment option (Paypal remains as an alternative). You can keep using Paypal or you can switch an existing subscription from Paypal to Stripe and it will retain your billing schedule. Please PM me with details if you experience any issues with the process!

The Wall of Honor isn’t reporting all new Supporters at the moment but when it’s fixed I’ll follow up with a post highlighting the new supporters who came aboard during the downtime.

Wednesday Update: @StuffedWombat released his first ever commercial game, Gutwhale! He's entertained us all with a ton of free games and is now unemployed thanks to COVID-19, so let's take this opportunity to thrust him into success.

Thank you everyone who participated in March!

If you missed it, we announced the Shelter in Place Art Jam winners on Friday and posted a Fan Art Roundup on Sunday.

Yesterday was the 20th anniversary of the Portal becoming automated; the day Newgrounds became the first website in history to let people publish their movies and games instantly. Every day since we’ve been watching, playing, voting on and reviewing the works of the community. Thank you everyone who has stuck around over the years and I hope you’ve enjoyed the ride so far!

Bug Stuff

We had a bug this morning where the CAPTCHA was missing on the sign-up form, so if you tried to create an account you can try again now.

A number of other bugs / issues were fixed this week:

  • We increased the max Follows and Favorites because some people had hit the wall.
  • Fixed bug where you couldn’t remove audio credits from projects.
  • Fixed bug where new project member credit was reset after they accepted invite.
  • Fixed bug where audio preview set to “Anyone” didn’t show the audio player.
  • Streamlined new follows in the feed so they shouldn’t line-wrap on mobile.
  • Fixed feed bug where Art with long titles didn’t have in-feed fave and review links.
  • Fixed bug where in-page audio player didn’t work in blog posts.
  • Fixed ToBlob error when uploading Art in some browsers.

Also surprise update: You can send pictures in PMs. Be aware that users can flag individual PMs for staff review and we'll delete any account that abuses this feature.

The next big update will be the Wiki layout and an API library coming for Pico-8 games, so they can add scoreboards and medals.

Our HaxeFlixel Game Jam is also in progress, with $1,300 in prizes!

Hope everyone is staying healthy and safe out there. What was your favorite thing on Newgrounds in March?

I was expecting Tom to comment all the Twitter stuff that happened yesterday. There was some dumb bickering about the "Newgrounds style" and how toxic this community is according to people who aren't in it. But there were also a bunch of people talking about that this site means to them. It was really nice to read :):):)

Had too many other things to announce, although I'm super grateful for all the people who shared positive stories about Newgrounds on Twitter yesterday. There's a Twitter Moment with a handful for anyone interested.

I will note that I hope the "Newgrounds Style vs CalArts Style" stuff doesn't discourage CalArts students from posting work here. Some people on Twitter were saying things like "Newgrounds people always make fun of CalArts style but get butthurt when someone says there's a Newgrounds style" and it's like... I'm aware "CalArts style" comes up on Twitter but the only time I've seen it on NG is this Mr. Sneaks VS CalArts cartoon; there's not some roving gang of "Newgrounds people" trying to tear down CalArts.

I'm trying to picture a roving gang of newgrounds people. I think of either a bunch of nerds or a circus. I feel like some people are trying to paint us as the accursed warrior heralds of the end times, here to destroy art and crush any resistance beneath gore slick greeves and iron shod boots. In reality we're actually pretty chill and would love to see your art.

Congrats to the winners! Cool to see hinca on top too, I've been enjoying those RE parodies a long time now, and it seems rare with so much detail put into parodies in particular... or maybe not. Either way loved that one. Good picks.

Curious what the max Follow and Favorite limit was before?

And if you guys are getting any benefits from the move to Stripe? Lower transaction fees?

So much good stuff happenin' around here lately! Quarantine doesn't seem all that negative after all...

Trying to define the NG style feels a bit like trying to define art itself too. There's really no one category we should fall into. Such a wide assortment of individuals who all work wonders in their own ways.

Fun to skim through those #Newgrounds moments though. So much appreciation.

Main benefit is simplicity - users can set up a monthly subscription with minimal info and without creating a Paypal account.

Stripe also offers data portability, where we could migrate to another processor if ever necessary (in a secure and PCI-Compliant way), whereas if Paypal decided to drop us one day, we would lose all the existing customers and not be able to migrate them elsewhere.

Nice. Not a fan of PayPal overall (the way they raise their own exchange rates a little extra for one, and then hide the option to pay in native currency directly), so it's cool to see another alternative there. Looking up transaction fees it seems they're exactly the same too, minus a lot of the extra charges PayPal takes for other services...

Good to know.

So, as NG became the first site in history to let people submit stuff instantly, it definitely encouraged many, many others to attempt it since then. DeviantART for example went live in August the same year to name just one example.

Well, sometime people spam bad content or ads for their own websites. When I give them low scores, they get angry, send private messages, and down vote anything that I may have on my profile.

Another great month of games! I keep expecting the amount of games submitted to decrease, but this month had 38 games nominated, which is one of the highest numbers yet: must be all the game devs bunkered down with nothing else to do but make great games, haha.

Here's to the 20th anniversary of the portal, and hopefully many more years of great games to play and review! I hope to repay this site for all the love it generates in full.

Congrats to the winners! Well deserved! I'm glad to see that Ollie and Scoops made it in the top 6 animation. Ollie and Scoops was one of my favorite toons in the March category. It had Cuphead/Tom and Jerry vibes that I totally loved.

Congratulations to all the winners! Has been a pretty good month here despite what's going on in the wider world.

The changes sound good I might look into the benefits of transitioning to stripe based on what cyberdevil said re exchange rates because that is a big thing paypal seems to shaft me on.

Im excited about what changes are going to be made to the wiki. As someone that is relatively new to Newgrounds I did have thoughts on this. I actually think having it be more accessible and visible would be beneficial. I think the wiki has the capacity to fill a lot of roles i.e: being a sort of time capsule as well as being a good 'starting' point for new users.

On that note I think a pinned FAQ thread in all the different forums would be beneficial. I see a lot of the same questions asked part of me wonders whether pinned FAQs would actually reduce this or not. I do see that some forums have it while others do not.

The twitter "drama" is upsetting. I hope people are intelligent enough to identify that it is clearly false narrative created to deliberately to be incendiary. Both terms / "styles" are non existent and as far as I know the conflict is fabricated by those that wish to incite drama. At the very least i'm glad some positives have come from it

Response to Best of March 2020! 2020-04-08 02:47:01

it feels nice to vote and see some of the stuff you enjoyed on the top. its also funny to realize youll never have the time to view all the content maybe unless you are consistently watching the front page material atleast once a day.

I heard "Calarts style" was coined by the original ren and stimpy dude who coerced teenage girls and used the phrase to complain about some other artist so in a way i feel this may represent a duality contained in people seeing older schools of animation contrasting from newer shows and the way the public collective conscious connects certain schools of thoughts not necessarily attached to animation with different schools of animation and user demographics through time and places

Has to be the Party Games server hosted by @PsychoGoldfish.

We've been having a blast with the Newgrounds bois and mainly meme-ing our way to the top.

By extension, the live interviews by @TheNewgroundsPodcast have kept me entertained and connected to the community as well.

Much love for the entertainment provided by this site and its community <3

Some things will burst for example penile tissues and it will swell up. So I would still do it.
