Flash Emulation Update

We're running an increasing amount of Flash content via Ruffle, the open-source emulator created by @Mike. You can sponsor it on Github! Newgrounds is a Diamond sponsor and we intend to see Ruffle all the way through to full Flash emulation.

At the moment, Ruffle can run a lot of animated content and some AS2 games. Long-term the goal is to run AS3 games as well, at which point every Flash ever uploaded to NG should continue to work in browsers, forever. Alien Hominid is currently running via Ruffle! You’ll notice the lives count is missing but eventually it won’t be and eventually it will be running with WebGL and maybe even gamepad support.

If you’d like to join the fun, we have a Reliving Old Flash with Ruffle thread in the forums. We’ve activated Ruffle on a lot of old content and it might not be working with some; it would be a great help if you report any issues you find! When you see people talking about how Flash will die this year, make sure they know NG has both a desktop player AND growing support for in-browser emulation, not to mention a ton of content that doesn't require Flash in the first place! We really need your help here; this is a daily battle to get the word out.

Supporter Update

As many of you have noticed, NG is working towards becoming ad-free. For this to succeed, we need to maintain steady growth in our Supporter numbers month after month and complacency will result in the return of ads. While any support is greatly appreciated, recurring subscriptions are extremely helpful for sustained growth.

Thank you everyone who has helped so far; I think we can all agree that NG is better being ad-free for everyone. Seriously, after 20+ years of depending on ads, wouldn’t it be great if NG didn’t have to do that anymore? If you have friends who are oldschool NG fans, hit them up to chip in three bucks a month. They’ll be preserving a large chunk of Internet history while making a better home for future artists.

I also recommend checking out the Featured Art from January, ranked by score and my January Audio Playlist Part 1 and Part 2.

Holy moly that's amazing, we didn't think we were going to rank at number 1, thank you so much! We needed that, especially since we have a lot less luck with Youtube (where it got taken down for copyright infringement yesterday. Still working on that)

Either way thank you so much and congratulations to all the other amazing animations and games on this list! Keep making awesome stuff

Cheers from Nelis, Ryan and Niels

We're working on Stripe payments integration at the moment, which could make a big difference; Stripe accepts debit cards and also accepts things like Apple Play. It will let people do subscriptions without making Paypal accounts, too. We're hoping it will give us the boost we need to keep this going.

Woahhh was not expecting second place! Incredibly honored! Never made a traditional animated short before that, but definitely a great incentive to try and produce more stuff somewhat following in its footsteps.

Lotta great content this month, super glad Peepoodo got a chance to shine.

Congratulations to all! I really enjoyed that Felix reanimated collab, shame it didn't place higher.

If I may be so bold, I'd like to take the opportunity to say that the hyper talented FoXcatO's 'Expectation Break' came out towards the end of January and has been, to my mind, criminally underrated. If I could persuade anyone reading this to give it a watch, I couldn't recommend enough that you do.

Wow, Epic Battle Fantasy 5. I'll have to check that out, the third one was my favorite Flash RPG ever. That's an interesting game to see here.

Fantastic month! Do yourself a favor and check out 30th place, God of Chaos, if you have not seen it already. It is amazing and I cannot believe how good the story was despite not saying a word. Not as flashy, but definitely worthy of your time. :)

God of Chaos was one of my top picks for the month, there was a ton of great stuff to choose from.

I find Peepoodo to be downright Putrid. It should not even exist, much less be encouraged.

How does morbid curiosity grow to this point of absurdity?

Ruffle looks promising so far, but I do have a couple of questions.

  1. Will full-screen support be added? A lot of legacy content is going to be more rather small for modern screens.
  2. Is Ruffle going to be available to other sites? I know Deviantart and Kongregate have plenty of Flash content.

It takes all kinds. The style was very much the original Newgrounds style, but I still appreciated it for some references and jokes. Similar to how games have Genres that I do not enjoy, but plenty of people feel otherwise.

Yea, the animation is definitely good; but the subject matter is terrible.

Congrats to the winners!

Looks like 2020's really starting the best way possible. Awesome stuff all over. And that ad-free/futuristic Flash immortality grind. Promising times!

What an incredible month of games and a pixel-icious start to this new year! The Best Of was so jam-packed with entries from Pixel Day that this is my longest review ever! Thanks to everyone for all the games, but you're gonna end up killing me with this pace, haha. I hope to come back soon with the final version of Final Fharmacy; cheers for the feedback on it!

kinda disappointed "bit by bit" didn't quite make it in to the top 5. it was my favorite animation of the month. but it did get recognition during Pixel day at least.

I checked it out after reading your post, it was cute as hell. I can't believe I missed seeing it until now.

I've been meaning to ask, is there a wiki page on Ruffle and/or the Newgrounds Player with all the info in one place? I keep getting people asking about "the death of Flash" and I'm tired of having to explain that no, everything isn't going to disappear forever. It would be super convenient to have a link (or even just a copypasta) to pass on to people to ease their concerns.

I made a post here as a place to point people to but it's due for an update now that Ruffle is actually being used on the site:
