Logan Whitehurst Documentary

@littlbox has launched a Kickstarter for a documentary about Logan Whitehurst, a musician who had early Internet success before leaving this world too soon. Take a moment to enjoy his songs and consider supporting the film!

Two of these videos are in their original Flash format and working thanks to Ruffle, the open-source Flash emulator created by @Mike! If you enjoy Flash preservation, consider becoming a Ruffle sponsor as well.

Pixel Day Winners

January 23rd was our fifth annual Pixel Day on Newgrounds, a celebration of pixel art and chiptunes! We’re awarding $100 prizes to the best art, animation, game and music.

Best Art

@Luis animated numerous pixel loops in recent years, his talents culminating with this infectious breakdancing gif. A good reminder for all of us to Never Give Up! Even observed as a single frame, this piece captures both the vibe of ‘80s hip hop culture and the spirit of Newgrounds.

Best Animation

@gatekid3 turned away from Radishes this year and delivered an opulent ode to gaming, with references ranging from Sonic and Mario to modern classics like Celeste and Shovel Knight. Lots of eye candy to catch in this one!

Best Game

The wizard is bouncy, the puzzles brain-bending and overall game feel is rock solid. All this PLUS fantastic music has proven once again that @mmattugh and @connorgrail make a killer game dev duo.

Best Music

An immediate call to action, Run! Run! by @KawaiSprite was the de-facto Pixel Day anthem here at the office. Capcom could totally build a Mega Man level around this song.

Thank you everyone who participated! Also thank you @RealFaction, @PhantomArcade and @IvanAlmighty for judging assistance.

Be sure to browse all the art, animation, game and music entries this weekend; there are lots of great works to enjoy!

If you like shooters, TRACTRON 2020 is one for you (don't sleep on that 'X' key tractor beam):

Phaser Game Jam

We're hosting a Phaser Game Jam that is currently in-progress. Try making a game with Phaser and share it here on NG to be eligible for a prize!

@PsychoGoldfish has been creating some great Phaser tutorials, such as Getting Started with Phaser and Animating Sprites with Phaser.

Oooh wow. the best art winning entry is incredible.

And I am glad I was able to do well this year without the help of a radish. More than that I'm glad so many people thought it was good.

It definitely sets itself apart from the other NG holidays (Pico Day, Madness Day, Clock Day) since it's not specifically NG related, so it's easier for outsiders to hop in on the festivities. And it applies to all the categories of NG (music, art/animation, games) since u know, it all pixel/retro gaming themed which almost every single person is familiar with to some extent. It's just a matter of time before it an official internet holiday...

Oh wow, first post!

I'm glad Pixel Day inspired me to get my shit together and finish that gif! It was fun to draw such an old character again.

I've been spitballing using him for a game perhaps with brand new people i've never worked with.

2020 is the year of Darnell and the rat if you follow chinese stuff.

THANK YOU

Darnell is going to be in Newgrounds Zero Hour, and I've been looking for people to work with on that game if you're interested, ever since 2015's game demo, which is a big part of the Pixel Day origin. Funny, I actually voice Darnell in the long-awaited Newgrounds Audio Drama project, still waiting on an editor for that lol. Darnell is neat. Grats on winning man, that animation is slick. You always make fun stuff. <3

Congrats a lot to the winners and non-winners, all of you did amazing works!!!

Special congrats to @KawaiSprite for best song, that was MARVELOUS! You totally deserve the prize :D

I also wanted to say thank you to everyone who listened, liked and shared my pixel day entry. I can't believe it got 7k views, more than the double of views of my most listened track from back in 2016/17, which broke the 3k views record in my entire history on newgrounds. I'm honestly happy for such an honor and I will make a post about it soon. See y'all in next events and, I hope, next year's pixel day!!!

Every decision you've ever made up until now (no matter how small) has potentially saved your life by keeping you from being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Luis made what's one of the most technically impressive pixel animations I've ever seen and I admin one of the largest frickin' Pixel Art Discords. Extremely well deserved top pick.

Good.

I don't know if it's necessary, but I'd like to apologize for not submitting anything after announcing with a lot of fanfare that I would. I've been working on a that seems promising. Everything is there, the melody, the cord progression and the structure. A better musician could finish it within 3 hours, but not me. I put it on the back burner for next year.

Unfortunately I didn't even have the time to check out everybody else's work yet, but Luis, gatekid3, mmattugh, connorgrail and KawaiSprite's submissions are all fantastic! Now I'll just have to check out the rest. Wish I had more time to enjoy pixel day.

Last saturday I organized a gameday. I made a chiptune playlist to listen to while we had pasta, waffles and ice cream. Then we went to the national game museum where they had tons of old arcade machines and such. After that I'd made burgers to eat while watching Scott Pilgrim vs the World and finally we played nes, snes and mega drive games all night long. So I suppose I celebrated pixel day in my own way. Should do that more often.

To think I'd never heard of Logan Whitehurst before this, and apparently he was prominent all over... hope that documentary makes it, it better reach the right niche of supporters...

Also Congrats to the winners! Solid work all over.

No worries, time doesn't always fare as you'd plan it. :) Looking forward to hearing that when next years great occasions come around again!

Been making that err too for the longest time. XD Fearing I'll start typing littl box without that e in other contexts instead now that I'm finally getting used to it...

I especially like how Pixel Day as a concept lends itself well to different mediums! I haven't done as much Pixel Art in general but it motivated me to experiment more with it in animation! :)

@Luis 's gif was INSANE.

I find the pixel art on NG to even be better/more creative than or contend very well against the stuff I would randomly see on pixiv which is like full of only illustrations so they have very insanely skilled pixel art on there youll run into. I believe in your donor goal and i only see it rising in my minds eye, wish I could afford it right now but being technically self employed and not always having steady work is very different from going into (often) nasty workplaces to do soul crushing jobs but being able to easily throw some money at places and things that matter to you
