Even though I made this account during the first wave, I'm planning to jump ship completely with the recent news. I have a concern however, I'm a writer first and foremost. Even though I also dabble in music and voice acting, I would love to post my stories or any other stuff like scripts etc on here. Would that ever be a feature? I have friends who are willing to migrate here who are also writers that are looking for a home after Tumblr fucked up.

That being said, I feel so welcomed here and can't wait for my laptop to get fixed so I can post some of my work here for y'all.

For now the Writing Forum and blogs will be the best place to share writing. The Writing Forum should be considerably nicer after our forum update, too. A lot of pieces are falling into place for the Lit Portal to finally happen but we have a lot of Art Portal / Project System updates to tackle so it's gonna be staying on the shelf a while longer.

Meh, generalizations happen. They're funny. What's important is to not vehemently believe those as absolute truth, and remain steadfast when faced with them if you can't find them funny.

Probably just that flash. Were you thinking of a title bar/tab notification earlier? I'm not sure that's even been talked about before. Could be interesting too.

While on the subject of forums, how about having the information currently only visible at the top (thread name, reply to topic, forum index link) visible at the bottom as well?

Seems strange with a title at the bottom of a page IMO, but a reply button would definitely be useful, agreed.

Also, I noticed that the forum jumplist(?) doesn't show the currently viewed forum - Would it be possible to add it in there (possibly with some sort of indicator to tell you that "you are here"), so that you can see what category the current forum belongs to without having to switch to a different forum?

I assume it was just left out because it seemed unnecessary, but knowing your way around this place it's easy to forget things aren't always obvious... maybe worth a @liljim (potentially solid simple site improvements suggested above).

Is art with sprites edited from games allowed? Specifically art that's mostly originally drawn but also has a sprite edited from a game in it because reasons.

It's good to be back. I used to browse NG back in the day, (same with stickpage, glad you're both still around) but never had a presence. Might as well change that now with all that's going down, Tumblr was getting stale anyway.

Sketch or newspost. :) Work without all original content (if it's the kind of content you didn't have permission to use) might get taken down if they're submitted as art though. Memes are great but since they usually include some photos the user might not have rights to use than it makes for trouble there.

Thanks =D I'll take notes!

lmao i knew it. i knew they were gonna do it. thats what happens when big corporations like yahoo pick up social platforms like that. rather than properly addressing the really pervasive nuanced issue the site was having with 18+, like prawnbots and underage trafficking rings, theyd rather just put a pox on everyones houses to keep it Friendly(tm) enough for the app stores and easy ad revenue. rip in peace tumblr

i guess that's something ive always respected about NG, you guys have kept the place's lights on for decades with ad revenue and community support alone, and it really shows the place is a labor of love over profit. already been here a lil bit but enjoying my time so far.

Just sucks when i cant see why someone voted 0/5 on my stuff cos they dont leave a review >:C

Hey,
I am Balkazzaar. Just moved here from Tumblr before it goes up in flames. Thank you for all your graciousness. I am more of silent passenger/admirer of artworks that can be 3d or non 3d. It could be anything. Not very picky when it comes to good artwork, be it NSFW or otherwise.
Nice to meet you all. Hope it will be a pleasant and long stay here.

Thanks

Kinda glad I decided to move here, as I still have a bunch of artwork I wanted to post that are NSFW. Tried Hentai Foundry, but they rejected some of the art I tried submitting and twitter's image quality is worse than tumblr's. At least this site retain the original image quality.

So this is a bit crass.. but I always used tumblr basically as a place to watch porn, and with that gone, I am wondering where a lot of the porn submitters will post stuff.

It would be kinda cool if we could make blogs that we could give specific viewers viewership to if we wanted to post the kinda nsfw stuff that tumblr no longer allows. Might get you more people signing up too as a lot of people who posted porn of themselves or share other ppls porn are now looking or somewhere to migrate to where people can subscribe to them and follow their feeds.

You really have a chance to jump on something huge here, cuz if you don't, other sites will.

I guess it depends on how "pornish" newgrounds wants to be known for being. Those who have seen my previous posts may think I'm against porn - I am not - I am an equal opportunity porn person - and this site seems to only show female porn - I'd like to see both male and female porn if it's gonna go in that direction.

that and I need somewhere to jerk off to now that tumblr is removing all that stuff hahaha.. we all gots needs!

I think that'd class as 'scene creator' stuff, so no, generally no. Not unless you have permission to use them or they happen to be licensed in such a way that it's OK (I guess abandonware would be alright too, since it falls into the public domain). There may be exceptions floating around but there is a chance they'll get taken down eventually. If you don't want to risk it best stick to original or permissible stuff.

If people had to show their score they might not give it a fair judgment. ;) Though yeah, when it's unjustified: sucks indeed.

Yes, something similar to what Twitter and Tumblr (probably other sites as well) do - showing the number of new things in the title bar/tab, or even just a symbol or somesuch to depict the presence of new notifications.

While on the subject of forums, how about having the information currently only visible at the top (thread name, reply to topic, forum index link) visible at the bottom as well?
Seems strange with a title at the bottom of a page IMO, but a reply button would definitely be useful, agreed.

Some part of the title-at-the-bottom addition was "why not, since everything else would be nice down there as well", while another part was "that's how all the other places do it" - but on further examination the presence of the thread title in every reply (and the title bar) may be sufficient.

Also, I noticed that the forum jumplist(?) doesn't show the currently viewed forum - Would it be possible to add it in there (possibly with some sort of indicator to tell you that "you are here"), so that you can see what category the current forum belongs to without having to switch to a different forum?

@TomFulp Regarding what you were saying about not letting any one type of content define NG for you - I understand that, other long term users understand that.

I know in years past, NG used to have a reputation for having lots of hentai, etc., but I don't recall NG ever having a problem with child porn, things of that nature. Tumblr had some of that - are there any concerns about attracting more content like that over here with the influx of new Tumblr users?

(no offense to legit Tumblr artists - welcome to NG and SO happy you're here!)

Ah, I didn't know they did that. Gmail had that as an experimental feature so long. Interesting. Kinda snowed in when it comes to other social communities I guess!

Some part of the title-at-the-bottom addition was "why not, since everything else would be nice down there as well", while another part was "that's how all the other places do it" - but on further examination the presence of the thread title in every reply (and the title bar) may be sufficient.

Good reasoning. Yeah the because-everyone-else-is-doing-it argument seems to unfortunately weigh heavily on some things these days... even when certain trends really make no sense... regarding a title at the bottom IMO it just feels like things are supposed to start with a title, not end with them. But when the title's in each reply too it seems maybe even better without anyway, though course references are useful otherwise.

Glad to have provided something to consider, and thanks for the replies.

Do hope staff consider them too. :) They probably have their hands full right now, but maybe in time. All small improvements are good improvements.

Like most of the people migrating, I dug up an old account and now will be using it. Newgrounds wasn't my childhood site, but I respect that it's been around for longer than my me, longer than my friends even. I can see many ways that the huge migration will benefit Newgrounds, and am glad to be welcomed back. Seeing everybody's approval and welcoming the artists is great, Tumblr really took it too far this time. It'll take a while for everyone to get settled, but here we are I guess. Although I do want to change my name, I'm willing to become a supporter for that :)

Regarding what features I'd like to see:

I'm coming back to Newgrounds after using Tumblr as my primary media site for 7 years, and I think there are a few things that would greatly benefit everyone who is also making the switch:

Multiple images in a single art post.

Being limited to only one image per post seems very restricting compared to how Tumblr, Twitter, and most other image hosting platforms like Instagram allow for it. Many artists rely on this functionality to post things like multiple sketches, concept art, and small albums centered around a theme. From what I've been seeing, this is the one feature that most artists are looking for in this site. It would also help to make an intuitive interface for viewing these images, such as a filmstrip viewer (pictured below).

Two new portals: one for comics, and one for creative writing.

One of Tumblr's strengths was in how many different forms of media could be hosted on it, making it an essential one-stop-shop for most creative media. Newgrounds could easily achieve this, and I think adding a comics portal and a writing portal could be the key.

Ideally, the comics portal would allow users to create an individual archive per comic, where individual image posts can be easily accessed. Users should also be able to have multiple images in each post in the event that they want their viewers to see multiple pages of their comic in one post. Being able to click from post-to-post (i.e. in a parent-child post system) would also be a very helpful feature for readers to navigate posts in chronological order.

As for the creative writing portal, I think a similar archive and parent-child post system would be great for hosting stories and their individual chapters, respectively. A simple interface for writing and viewing text posts, or even importing word files, would be a nice start for this portal. From there, we can see what other features writers will want.

Favorites, comments, and ratings from the people you follow on the user's front page.

Another one of Twitter and Tumblr's nicer functionalities is that users can promote the works of others, and have it be immediately viewable to their followers in their feeds. This is a great means for users to discover new artists and content producers, and I think Newgrounds could really benefit from something similar. Putting up a separate feed for what the people you follow are marking as their favorites and commenting on would be a great way to give users a greater means of finding other users with similar interests.

That's all I've got for now, but I hope this is useful. I'd love to see Newgrounds become a new hot-spot for all things media, and get closer to realizing its motto of "Everything by Everyone". It's good to be back.

It's like how it was back when the place first started out again. :) Too much demand to keep up with the influx, always running on a budget; catering to a bigger audience than it allowed... ah, good times. Hope this time it's possible to tweak for the traffic though. Gets you wondering how much it really is...

It's a concern but so far people seem to get how it works around here. Anything that brings a lot of traffic to the site will inevitably bring new problems with it but we'll hope for the best!

It's certainly interesting to see how quickly things change after the news on Tumblr.

I've been around for awhile, but I've mostly just browsed the games and videos here. While I'm not part of this Tumblr migration, witnessing it made me remember when I used to frequent Newgrounds almost every day.

I started taking voice acting classes this year. Perhaps I should edit my recordings and upload some of them. Hm.
