The Supreme Court struck down a federal law that prohibits sports gambling Monday in a landmark decision that gives states the go-ahead to legalize betting on sports.

The court ruled 6-3 to strike down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, a 1992 law that barred state-authorized sports gambling with some exceptions. It made Nevada the only state where a person could wager on the results of a single game.

Well, with fantasy football sites like Fanduel and Draftkings being gambling in all but name, this was practically inevitable. Plus, with the NBA and MLB having active discussions about gambling in-arena, the stigma of gambling in sports has practically disappeared over the years. Hell, they practically do this with European soccer all the time, and especially in Britain, and nobody is complaining about it there.

Of course, having said that, there is a whole lot of things that need to be worked out between the leagues/NCAA and gaming companies, not to mention things like corruption, where all the money will go to and whatnot, so we got a long way to go. After all, the sports leagues don’t want another Pete Rose/Tim Donaghy scandal.

Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.

problem is the NFL is known for its back room meetings of team owners. and who knows what goes on there when it comes to who will play against who where to generate ticket sales and goes to the super bowl. They're known for shitty behavior.

i see no problem with this. if you wanted to bet on sports you were gonna do it one way or another, may as well make it legal.

Imagine if they legalized sports gambling in Europe or the UK where they already have riots because of sports championships.
Civilized part of the world my ass.

Nice trolling

I'm being 100% serious, Europeans need to chill the fuck out. It's just soccer. I know you people have some sort of weird, pent-up aggression from living in nanny states all your lives but calm the hell down.

I was more referring to the sports betting thing, which we've been able to do on anything since the dawn of time, including on Obama and the Undertaker to win

Seriously? Was not expecting places as uptight as the UK and EU countries to openly allow betting. I figured they would look down on something like gambling.

It might actually explain some of the sports "hooliganism", they're all pissed off about losing 100 euros on a football game so they have nothing better to do.

Not really, most incidents are by people just using sports events as an excuse for a fight

My favorite part of this is when the SCOTUS Conservatives, and the Conservatives in this thread realize this just opened the door to legalizing Sanctuary Cities...no really, read the ruling again, I read a pretty persuasive article by a Constitutional Law Scholar that pointed out how this leads to that.

Not a gambler myself, but it isn't the government's business to say we can't bet on things... so this is definitely good news.

Edit: found it. talks about what a state legislature may or may not with the 10th amendment.

Anti-Commandeering Principal.

I want to also make some kind of a joke about a case on a law called "PASPA" being a "Passport for illegals" or some such thing but...fuck it, just read the article, it's interesting.

The act of gambling is degenerate and ruins lives so I think it should be banned, saying that it's good for it to be unbanned even though it ruins so many people live's is like supporting drugs imo

I agree, but I still think they should cut you off at some point. Not just when you're winning too much.

That's up to the business you are patroning decision . Fun fact in Vegas if you can count cards and get 5% up on the House you can walk out with 50 to 100 grand before they cut you off and ban your ass.

But then again the casino/betting parlor is making a crap ton of money off of them, so they're not likely too.

Yup it's pretty much an idiot tax.

No, with the federal ban killed, states are scrambling to write up laws and rules to regulate their own incoming sports betting. The game is afoot
