It's a combination of factors. in the 2000's, only nerds and college students used the internet. Then in the 2010s, social media took off. Then our parents joined Facebook, so we got the fuck out of there. Now our grandparents are on Facebook.
In and of itself, that wouldn't be such a problem, except for the fact that Facbook's algorithm's only goal is to keep you reading.
To this end, it only shows you stuff you already agree with. If you google something, Google will show you the correct answer, whether you like ir or not. But when you're on Facebook? First of all, you don't decide what to look at, Facebook decides for you and serves it up on a never-ending conveyor belt for your consumption. But more importantly, it only shows you things it's pretty sure you will like.
So if lean left, it'll show you stuff by and for the left. If you lean right, it'll show you stuff by and for the right. It's not just politics, though, it's everything. Your Facebook feed is as incriminating as your internet history, in this sense. (Or at least it would be if porn was allowed on Facebook.) Facebook separates people into "bubbles." Anything you don't like, it censors so you can't see it. Anyone who bothers you, you can block.
In this sense, you are complicit in the construction of your own cage. If you didn't block anything, presumably, Facebook would show you everything. (This isn't technically true because they measure things like how many seconds an image is on-screen and where your eyes look on the page. So it might be more accurate to say that the act of liking something on Facebook, as opposed to Liking it on Facebook, is what eventually pushes you into a Bubble.)
And all of this wouldn't be having such an outsized impact if it was just a few nerds on the internet logging into facebook via computer. But it's in our pockets now. It's on our phones. Everyone's connected, all the time, even when they try to unplug. (Your phone literally uses more battery when it's turned off than when it's turned on. Why? Well, partly because it's still using the GPS and radio to track your movements, but mostly it's wasting battery on purpose to encourage you to keep it turned on.)
And once you're in a bubble on Facebook, you're surrounded by Your Kind of People. That means anyone who doesn't pass muster gets blocked. That embarrassing relative you don't like to admit is related to you. That unfortunate ex you wish you'd never met. The crazy person shouting insults on the bus. Click. Blocked. They disappear from your life. Except, they don't actuallydisappear. You just can't see them anymore.
The real culture shock happens when, say, a person from the bubble that watches Anime takes a look at the internet of someone who watches Fox News. Or vice versa. Then suddenly the internet is a scary place, everyone's crazy, all these lunatics are coming out of the woodwork! How could this have happened? Whendid this happen? Where the heck did all these weirdos come from?

Personally I feel all schools should be fitted with medieval murderholes over all entrances with boiling oil on them. this would be a far more effective way of stopping gun violence and school shootings then background checks and basic sensible gun control policy.
