Construct 3 Jam Theme! 2018-03-08 11:00:10

Our Construct 3 Jam starts TODAY!

The theme is "You are not the main character."

Your game will need to incorporate this theme in some form. How you do it is up to you!

Construct 3 is a web-based platform for developing games. No programming experience is required and games can be exported for platforms such as PC, mobile, Xbox One and the web.

Construct 3 requires a subscription to unlock all features and this jam is a great opportunity to try the free version and see if you're down for supporting an awesome game dev tool. The ability to open a web browser and work on your game ANYWHERE without installing anything is really ambitious and a great example of where the web is going.

There are prizes!

1st Place: Year's sub for C3, pig badge and sweet hamper
2nd Place: Year's sub for C3, pig badge
3rd Place: Year's sub for C3, pig badge
4th Place: Pencils and pig badge
5th-10th Place: Pig badge

The top three winners will also receive one year of honorary Supporter status here on NG.

To participate:

1) Get started with Construct 3 and make a game!
2) In C3, click Menu > Project > Export > Web (HTML5) and download the ZIP containing your game.
1) Create an NG account if you don't have one.
2) Create a new game project.
3) Upload your C3 ZIP file.
4) Under file properties, set your dimensions to your C3 viewpoint (C3 defaults to 854 x 480, 16:9).
4) Tag your entry with "C3Jam18" so we find it.
5) Preview your submission to be sure everything looks good.
6) Publish!

Additional Rules:

1) Your game must be based on material you have rights to, for example you can't use Mario sprites.
2) Your game must not contain unlicensed audio / music.
3) You may work with artists and musicians to support your project (one person receives the prize though).

The Audio Portal is a great resource for music as well as these royalty free music websites.

If you've never made a game before, give it a try! The C3 website has a bunch of tutorials and demo projects you can eyeball.

If you would like to volunteer your art or audio talents for potential team-ups, you may do so in this thread. You are also welcome to post about your game progress in this thread!

Deadline is April 8th, 11:59 PM EST. We look forward to playing your games!

If you're curious, check out the Construct 3 Jam 2017 entries.

Here's a cool read on the upcoming new Construct 3 runtime, which will be delivering a huge performance boost to your games!

I dig the theme. Ideas rolling already. Hoping to make something, even if it's just a tiny game. Been wanting to try out this fancy newfangled interweb Construct. See you all in the portal.

Non-Subscribers are doomed to lose from the start.

In future events we might have some jam licenses to hand out but there isn't anything set up for that at the moment. Hoping it helps expand the C3 subscriber base, though, those guys have been working non-stop to keep making it better.

I've never made a game or anything like it, but i know how to draw and animate.

If anyone needs an animator for your game, message me.

ps: I know I dont have any animation uploaded to newgrounds, but trust me, I know my stuff.

That is really nice of you to offer animation help.

I should submit an animation, so everybody can see your skills.

Well, the limit is 25, not 50. Personally, I will try it, even as free version, you just need a simple Game Concept

Alright, I'll make a showreel them!

I think it'll eventually come down to who can optimize their code the best. However, most actions can be taken care of with behaviors as opposed to lines of code (platforming, physics, camera movement, etc).

I would need much more practice before I am ready to submit an animation.

More? Have you started practicing already? Really would be interesting to see what you'd put out, what with the empty repertoire so far. :) It's never too late to get started!

I have done a little here and there. Not enough to make anything decent, but I have plenty of good ideas for animations.

That might be too advanced for me. I know there are plenty of haters that would love to blam my first creation.

I was thinking more like if you have ideas, then you might be able to team up with somebody who's willing to animate them.

I have been thinking about doing a team up. I have written down ideas for a series of animations, but i keep rewriting them. They never seem good enough.

Wouldn't have taken you for a perfectionist. :) Eternal revisions are really the bane of all forms of creativity/efficient crafting... hope you get to it some day!

50 events eh. Challenge accepted. As a coder I think I'm at a serious disadvantage because all c3 requires is that u can draw, with drag and drop logic. Time get drawing i guess :) I hope everybody loves stick men!

Ideally there would be subscription winners 1-5 and non subscription winners 1-5. Because it's hard flesh out without 50+ events. Still good luck to everybody! I maybe knocking on a few audio and artists pm boxes

Yes, I am a perfectionist. It can be a hassle trying to get things just right. I don't recommended anybody else trying it.

I also tend to stretch myself too thin. Trying to start to many projects or assignments at once. Ugh

Can relate to both of those! Though the perfection's a battle I think I keep at bay for the most part. Just late nights/tired moments when simple posts quickly turn into eternal revisions and suddenly hours have passed on the most unnecessary edits...

For sure. Gotta keep that focus; handle what's important first instead of picking up new things... always a challenge.

I don't know if I would call them flaws, but it is good to understand yourself. Working on trying to better yourself is always worth the time and effort.

Finding motivation and keeping focus are both important parts of the equation.
