I tend to really enjoy the top-down ones like Diablo, Gauntlet, or Sacred 3.

those are character action games. Hack n Slash is more like Diablo, Baulder's Gate or Gauntlet.
my favorite would be Diablo 3. i beat it and got to paragon level 40 in 3 days recently. good fun.

You know, now that I think about it...I don't think I really have any Hack N Slash games.
The closest thing I can think of are Prototype and Prototype 2, but those are more open world adventure games that have a Hack N Slash undertone.
It's all shits and giggles until someone giggles and shits.

Diablo 1. Amazing atmosphere. Still easily one of the most immersive games of all time.
Though when you say "Hack and Slash" what comes to mind is the Dynasty Warriors tyoe and those are the worst games I've ever played. Mindless button mashers and watch dumb ai go flying around from a sword swipe...
Currently, it's God of War II. I was thinking Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks, but never got to finish it.
Yeah, yeah, scroll down. Nobody gives a shit anyways.

Dante's Inferno was really fun in my opinion. And it had a great story to back it all, it was great.
Diablo! I also played LotR war in the north recently and really enjoyed it, though sometimes it felt like you were smacking your sword into a brick wall when you fought monsters since either their hp was super high or your attack damage was really low. That could use some adjustments but overall not bad
