"Instead, the FCC would simply require internet service providers to be transparent about their practices so that consumers can buy the service plan that’s best for them and entrepreneurs and other small businesses can have the technical information they need to innovate."
That same kind of idiotic thinking is also behind the Trump version of health care "reform" which (contrary to their misguided beliefs) will NOT raise competition and bring down costs. What will happen is that big companies will get away with whatever they want, charging astronomically high amounts for what should be basic services. The people that need these services (whether it's a free an open Internet or health care) the most will be left behind to rot. It won't take very long for the results to be obvious.
The poorest people in rural areas that voted Trump into office will probably continue to, because they will be less likely to afford access to even the most basic information online that could convince them otherwise. It's a digital world now. Newspapers still get printed, but much less so than in the old days. You might see a little bit more of a resurgence if it becomes common knowledge that only the rich can go online.
If you think I'm exaggerating, consider the very real fact that there are some parts of the country where Blockbuster is still open and doing well because Netflix is too expensive and inaccessible. They are in certain parts of Texas, Oregon and Alaska. Google the exact locations yourself.
A less informed public in general is good for people like Trump. Notably, despite all the information he has access to, he's just too impulsive, unhinged and stupid to make sense of it. Part of me is happy about that, because he has bad ideas. Someone with the same ideas but smarter is infinitely more dangerous.
Fight this with every last breath that you have. This is part of a scheme at the highest levels of government to make America stupid again...well, stupider.
