Nov COTM: UNDER THE SURFACE! 2017-11-02 01:38:53 Reply

Hey guys! You know the drill! It's the challenge of the month, and this is your WIP thread to share ideas and progress and help each other out! Have loads of fun, I'm excited to see your creativity!

DEADLINE:
November 21st 2017

THEME:
"UNDER THE SURFACE"

Illustrate a depiction of the 'Iceberg Effect' - a scene showing one thing that is apparent on a surface level, hiding an extreme or contrasting part or piece. For an obvious example: Diglett's body which is always hidden, or perhaps motives or emotions hidden behind an emotional facade of a character, only obvious to the viewer of the illustration, but not those depicted in the image. In short - show something on the 'surface' (be it literally or metaphorically) hiding something substantial and surprising - be it scary, funny, epic, cute, etc.

Submissions will be judged on the following:

1 - Technical execution and quality of art

2 - Creativity and originality of the theme

3 - Ambition

HOW TO ENTER:
Upload your finished artwork to the Newgrounds.com Art Portal

TO ENTER THE OPEN CATEGORY:
TAG your artwork with the word 'UNDERTHESURFACE'
(That’s it! Scouted or unscouted, I will find your entry,
as long as you tag it with the exact word above)

TO ENTER THE BEGINNER CATEGORY:
TAG your artwork with the word 'B-UNDERTHESURFACE'

OPTIONAL: Share your entry on social media using the Hashtag #UNDERTHESURFACE

This is a worldwide competition - join the Arty Party, wherever you are, and whatever age you may be!

RULES:
- You may submit a maximum of 1 entry
- You may NOT enter both categories (open/beginner)
- You MUST include a link in the description of your final submission leading to a 'mid-development' source (image or video) showing the entry is your original creation, but DO NOT tag more than one piece of art on newgrounds (only tag your final entry, not any work in progress entry) or you WILL be disqualified
- No pornographic material of any kind, violence must be PG13 and not too gruesome
- Your piece MUST be tagged correctly and be submitted by the deadline
- You may not submit a piece using stolen artwork or imagery

PRIZES!

Hey, does this have to be digital art or can it also be traditional?

As far as I know it's always been both, unless specified otherwise. And I don't remember him saying anything about the medium, so just use whatever you feel most confortable with.

I understand that there should be no direct pornographic material, but is reference to it allowed? None showed on screen, simply an implication of it, I want to make my piece delving into a teenager under the surface, so I was thinking the backside of a computer monitor and a bottle of lotion. Just wondering to what extent this is allowed.

I'm new to the Newgrounds or these challenges, so I wanted to ask - how and where do I post mid-development shots? ^^

WIP! Kinda.... I don't know which one I wanna do!

1 - The Helpful Anglerfish. [Most people see the fish as fearful and scary but I want this one to be a help of the the boy on the raft reading a book.]

2. The Buoy. It looks like a life saver.... But it's just a hungry monster named Tom.

3. The Bob Bush! Comical route! Bob Ross's fro as a big ol bush with some mountains and trees behind him while there's a painter painting the scenery not knowing who's underneath....

4. The Peaceful Turtle. Just a sea turtle helping a lil fella to land.

I think I want to go the Anglerfish because I can do some awesome colors with it, But then again I want to do the Original Buoy monster....

Which one should I go for?

I love number 4! I onestly think 1 is a little bit too cliché and if done right 4 could be really good.

Angler fish ARE scary, but that could be a good defence in a fight against a school of other fish. Or against any underwater creature.

Would this be considered as 'Under the Surface'? Although it's not quite clear yet, the evil right side will be shrouded in darkness while the bright and happy facade on the left will be what people see.

Number 3 really made me laugh, very original :P
But number 1 is visually the coolest I think, that monster fish looks epic! Looking forward to see the finished result, good luck!

1st, thank you JinxyF for explanation! ^^
2nd - here's W.I.P for now, the idea is that a giant human statue each year grows a flower out of it's hand. Nobody knows what is underneath the ground, because they only can see the forehead and the flower. Until...
So far, I drew only muscular system, and everything's based by proportions of Vitruvian man.
Also, Jazza, if you read this, I hope you won't get angry because I used your leg reference for this giant statue :)

Here is a WIP of my acrylic Under the Surface painting. As you can see a baby is in the bathtub and what lies beneath are two spoopy-looking octopi.

Finally got myself a good idea.
If I do it well it's gonna be awesome.

I get very intrigued by the idea of mystical and magical combining with the normal.
So I'm doing a dig walker and a dog, the dog sniffs something most would think is a rock...

So sketchy concept done! Woop!

Today I decided to give it a shot (Hence why I just joined Newgrounds today). I used to draw a lot and I was getting quite good at it, and lately I've been really wanting to get a bit of experience with Digital Art. So today I installed Krita and now its time to watch all the tutorials made by Jazza! ;3

the first one looks cool.
the fish looks amazing.

the second one is ok...
if ur goin 4 a death from below kind feel u should consider making tom really long and make an interesting above water scene.

as for bob ross.
may i ask why his afro is as big as a mountain in the depiction?
oh wait...
its always like that.

the turtles pretty good.
not much above water though.

i'd say go for the first one.
i like the way you drew the fish.

Sure thing! Beginner category is for artists that are new to art itself, or just learning, while the OPEN category is for everyone else ^^ Basically, even beginning artists can enter both or just BEGINNER, while all others can enter OPEN ^^

The 3th one made me laugh and I think if you expand on it and try different compositions it could be really awsome. The other three are pretty standard and the first thing people would think of

You can't enter both, it says in the rules. Pick beginner or Open.
