We've seen it before. We get a warning about 18 and above content, but why does it exist. First off most teenagers simply ignore it and view it anyways even if they are not 18 yet. I know I did and guess what nothing bad happened. My eyes didn't fall out of my head. My head didn't explode. My brain didn't start leaking out of my head, and I didn't become some crazed serial rapist.
So here's my question. Can anyone think of a rational reason for these stupid 18 and over laws?
To inform and allow the consumer to consent to what they're viewing. Not everyone is the same; what doesn't affect one person may really impact another. As to why people aren't allowed to purchase 18+ merchandise while underage, an argument could be floated that they aren't old enough to make an informed decision (similar to statutory rape laws). Yeah, it's definitely a stretch since viewing adult material definitely doesn't impact people as much as sex does, but it's something.

Often it's also a good indicator that it may be a bad idea to proceed if you're at work.
18 is considered to be the age of maturity in many circles, and is the usual age where kids are away from their parents for long periods of time, whether in college, military or other backgrounds. Part of the reason for warning labels that have 18+ on things like porn is generally because by this time, you know (at least theoretically) what you're getting yourself into and that you're mature enough to know reality from fiction and the like.
Of course, saying all that, trying to put an arbitrary age number of what is considered "mature" is very subjective to say the least, which is partly why said age tends to fluctuate not only between countries, but states/providences as well.
Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.
It's simple. It's the only practicable way to keep those under 18 for accessing the material while allowing those above 18 to access it. Anything beyond the honor system would be so detrimental to business that sites relying on ad clicks would lose so much traffic their income would dry up.
ironically, the only time I remember clicking the "I'm not 18 yet" option was after turning 18 just to see if the tab would close or if it would send me back to Google
