Supporter Update

I've been thinking a lot lately about pulling all third party ads and betting the farm on Supporter subscriptions. If we did this, it would be sink or swim time and we would need to drastically ramp up new supporters to make it work. If you've been considering becoming a supporter, it would be much appreciated if you did so now! It's only $3 per month or $25 for the year. You can also pay more if you want to give more support; the amount is adjustable and any amount is a huge help.

I'll wait and see how many supporters we have after the new user pages and content view pages have launched. If we could grow at a pace of 15 people per day, it would really add up over the coming months, especially if we can retain a majority of subscribers long-term. Take a look at all the perks, too!

Best of May 2017!

AOK once again owning the picks! :D

I am a bum and I still need to become a supporter, but if you made me an honorary supporter it would kill two birds with one stone! YAY!

Congrats to all the winners. I always vote and this time I picked some winners!

Is the idea that this would light a fire under enough people if the stakes were raised? We could go full campaign mode about this being the critical push in that scenario. What are the pros and cons of keeping both, although Supporter subscriptions would be more beneficial for the site.

Response to Best of May 2017! 2017-06-07 13:34:20

A mostly expected but mostly worthy line-up! Congrats all!

As for ditching regular ads entirely: seems like a drastic move! That may be the idea, but though ads might not be generating that much revenue, are they all that cumbersome to manage? It seems like an easy albeit less profitable method of income best maintained if not. Could even amp it a bit further and let normal people buy ad space, to promote their projects and what-not, feels like it's something there's potential to work with still.

Also that 'No Ads (say goodbye to ad skins, banners and pre-rolls)' Supporter-becoming incentive looks pretty good.

The motivation is a combination of low performance (as far as I can tell from the stats, 75% of our visitors are running adblock anyway) and growing risks from stuff like this, where ad networks are getting infected with new forms of malware that pushes bad ads they don't even know are going out.

@Cyberdevil has a good point about selling our own ad space, which has been another dream for a long time now, just a question of how effective it would be. It wouldn't be enough to simply offer it up, we'd have to go out and active sell it but maybe we'd be an easy sell in the indie games market, where I think we might be able to give devs a good value.

That seems like a really stupid idea. No one's going to subscribe because the ads are gone. That could actually make the site run out of money.

one positive about being an annoying child who didnt know what they were doing and who got internet access way too early is that you can explicitly know what NOT to do

I hope that this day comes eventually. And then I wish you to be able to just flip the bird at all the troublesome ad stuff which has been bothering you and all of Newgrounds in the past years. This would surely be a great relief!

I just think that it is a tad too early. But this is my opinion.

What might help, but this too is just a suggestion: Give stats. How many games were published this week, how many viewers did artists get, how many songs were listened to, how many collaborations, how many active voice actors, how many forum entries, ... Actual numbers. Publish graphs via Twitter and other Social networks. You got thousands of subscribers there. I personally like to see such stuff and it would make me interested.

Also why do I like wieners in my mouth?

People like to see a big push and join in to make the effort a reality, I'm not sure at the moment it's the best idea. But maybe it's time to prep a campaign for the leap. Only thing is, do you say you're going to do it and get people ready to see the results before hand, or jump with the faith people will catch you?

Also I don't know man, uh, have fun with that.

I could definitely see people buying NG ad space if the price is right. NG has a very consistent amount of dedicated fans, and as long as you aren't selling ad space to some low quality crap, you're gonna get some good return - on both sides of the transaction.

When it came time to choose between Supporter subs & 3rd party/rate ads, or private capital, most of us wanted what we have now. We wanted you to have control of your own website, without fear of what the new backers would want. We were stupid and naive as fuck. Some truly awfully run sites, quite literally burned cash, crashed and got away with it. Now the jig is up, unless we offer ourselves to a Chinese chemical factory or an Indian car manufacturer. I'd add the links, but I think you read the newspapers and mags online... another model struggling against the monopolization of the info age.

What we didn't know at the time, was how ruthless the big 5 tech companies would be at destroying the diversity (sucking the money out) of the internet. As far as I'm concerned, the fruit loop who runs Amazon owes you at least 6 figures for all the years NG's had the option to find stuff at his site.... where's the damn reciprocity, where's the paying it forward? This sorta cash hoarding was seriously frowned upon when our folks were kids... top 1%'s tax rate was 91%, too bad that's never coming back lol

Should look at starting a class-action suit against Google for its Ad-Sense blacklisting for life crap, what kind of good, old-fashioned American business would do such a thing? A monopoly would, can only wonder how many more sites out there got shafted?

Anyway, day-dreaming aside, I'm more or less OK with 3rd party ads (though I can keep the worst cookies/ads out as a Supporter) and muddling along. It's easy to get mad, stamp our feet and declare to the internet "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore", take an even riskier route, but, hosting bills, taxes, that shit is every month, quarter and year.

I wouldn't mind donating a few bucks into a fund that explores NG's financial options, since all of us here are too close to the problem. Not 100% sure, can't find the article, but I'm pretty sure this company did Trump's campaign. IDK, check around, get some estimates and/or ideas about how much $ growth is possible with Newgrounds. Somehow the newspapers and pron companies are making a go of it.

The biggest folly of the Information Age, is that there's too much of it, and we end up finding what we want, not what we need. I've seen so many well sourced articles over the past few years, and very few of them are reported in the MSM, and I can only conclude that it is to protect the worst players/investors in our global economies.

OK Tom, done ranting, thanks for reading, wish I could be of more help.
Tell grand lurker @wadefulp to post something on the site (not under it, which I assume he does daily in the form of PM's and admin), I'd much rather read about his latest excavated finds here than somewhere else.... people have been talking, you know.

As an incentive to advertisers? Or supporters? Would also be interested in something like this. Maybe even some form of yearly review on how activity; numbers change. As long as it's not all negative... totally irrelevant, but BackBlaze has had a nice numerical tradition going for a few years now, both interesting/inspiring stats and improved company image with transparency like that.

Potential supporters. I think of game designers, artists, animators, musicians. It does not need to be a direct contact via social network, spreading numbers somehow always get attention in my opinion. I think of the numbers of Kong published about the ratio between Flash and HTML5 games some months ago for example. I was informed about it because one of my followed contacts liked a retweet of someone mention it. I had no interest in Kong but was spending quite some time afterwards finding out about what was behind these numbers. I can totally see people getting hooked when they see raw numbers. There is too much "potential-schmotential"-BS floating around. These would be actual facts.

But of course no company-critical numbers should be provided. Tom will know what is responsible.

I'm dying to show breakdowns of what tools people are using - we plan to add a section to specify your tools when the project system gets revamped to the new layout. At that point we can compare game tools but also animation tools and theoretically art and audio as well. Will definitely make for fun info to help people see what is trending.

I say to keep the ads until it's absolutely necessary to get rid of them. If they're giving the website any cash, I'm fine with them. Keep pushing the supporters, though. There's no reason to slow down in getting people to pay for what they love around here.

First make sure every page on Newgrounds is mobile friendly! At the very least people should be able to watch videos in a mobile friendly manner to guarantee some extra page visits. Switching off ads would be suicidal for now, but that's what I believe anyway. Here's something you could do in the meantime: Make it a supporter feature to turn ads on. If it already exists, please let me know so I can find it and make my favorite site some extra money.
