How do you know which category you should be in?
I'm 15 and newish to art, and everything I've seen so far is (way) above my level. But on the other hand, I dont want to have an unfair advantage??

this is my WIP for the May 2017 Challenge. I really hope I will finish my entry for this challenge this time !
It'll be a lvl99 red hood !! And as you can see, she has tamed the wolf...
Next step is scanning and coloring it...
is it ok to do a book/fairytail character as long as its iconic enough?
is it ok as long as the ilustration makes it clear where the character is from?
like example would drawing goldilocks from goldilocks and the three bears be ok, or does the character have to be from a visual media?

With your skill, I think you belong to the open category. (My opinion anyway)

sketch of a level 99 Spyro, sorry if it a little messy especially on sparks I'm still trying to figure out a good pose for him.curious if Spyro looks good as he is now or should I add a few more details on him? also the background is supposed to be Gnasty Gnorc's secret treasure trove and the painting is supposed to be burnt.

you could just draw either both Mike and Sully or Sid and Manny since they're pretty much a team but if you only have time and energy to draw one character I'd say go for Sully, hope I was helpful enough and good luck!

You should see mine, it's way mess up than yours.
Also your background idea is not that bad.

Sorry for the late response that may be unnecessary by now, but yeah, You should definately go and make some neat background, like, for example some romans that just got their asses kicked, or perhaps them gauls taking control over Rome, it would definately make an already good piece even better ^^
So many great ideas and designs so far. Currently in the very basic design sketch phase for my entry at the moment but will post some images when I get a little further (drawing animals is hard ;) ). (Hopefully I will have time to continue my short streak of COTM entries in this busy month!)

What do people think so far though? I wanted to still keep the Disney style but make it kind of gladiator warrior ish.
This looks very nice so far, definitely getting the Disney styled warrior vibe.
Perhaps you could add levelled up versions of their 'familiars' such as Sebastian, Lumiere and Pascal? That might add an extra flourish if you have time.

I would imagine a fairy tale character (a well known one like Goldilocks at least) would be fine, sounds like it could be an interesting concept. Your description and title can always clarify your intentions. :)

I love these characters! I can feel my childhood calling. I think you'd be fine without the background if enough detail is put into them. This whole competition is about challenging yourself so if you think a background could add to the piece and elevate it then do it, push yourself.
