Sure, you've got a point, but not quite.
Let me tell you something my old teacher told me.
When drawing as a beginner, you have to use your right brain and left brain separately. Not to take literally, this is what he means: http://www.jeanniejeannie.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/22035_640.jpg
left brain: structire, analysis.
right brain: creativity, love, passion, whatever you feel like.
Sure you can make your own structures from memory (not immagination), but you have to be able to memorize those patterns with your left brain. If it fails, go back to references. Keep trying untill you're confident enough.
You're training your left brain now. Forget about the right, at least during theese studies.
It would be nice if someone else were here to give you guys advice, though.
