Welcome to the 2016 Art-Inspired Music Contest! It's important you read all this if you're entering in this contest, the rules. I made a few exciting changes to the contest so there's less reading this year, and it's simplified. Below you will see what this contest is about, the rules, the prizes you could win, and the discussion thread! I have a new thing this year called the Prize Pool, more info below!

This is the Submission Thread,so i MUST stress to everyone not to post any discussion here as many have in the past, click here to go to the Discussion Thread where you can chat and ask questions! Only submit your contest song submissions here.

Quick shoutout to @Template88 for the amazing artwork she did for the contest! Check out the poster/album art at the bottom! That's going to be the artwork for the contest album cover.

How It Works:

1): You pick a single piece of artwork in the Art Portal here from a Newgrounds artist you really appreciate (make sure to give them credit for inspiration and message them also when you're done, I'm sure they'll appreciate it!).

2): Create a song (but not before the start date) inspired by that art and submit it by posting the link on this thread before the deadline, also post the link to the picture that inspired it as well, also give the name of the picture and artist!

3): NEW TWIST! If you win, you get to pick a prize from the Prize Pool (more details below)!

Now, let's see what you could win!

Prizes:

1st Place:

An interview with @TheInterviewer, a spray-painted Poster by @Ceevro, Supporter Status (browse ng with no ads courtesy of @TomFulp), A Free Copy of @Samulis VSCO 2 Orchestral Sample Library, Tankmen Figure (donated by @AdamNG), A Salad Fingers Figure (donated by @AdamNG), an Alloy Figure (donated by @AdamNG), a Forum Sig drawn by @Template88, your song on the A.I.M. 2016 album, you get to be the first to pick a game of your choice from the Prize Pool (details below)!

2nd Place:

An interview with @TheInterviewer, a spray-painted Poster by @Ceevro, Supporter Status (browse ng with no ads courtesy of @TomFulp), Tankmen Figure (donated by @AdamNG), an Alloy Figure (donated by @AdamNG), a Forum Sig drawn by @Template88, $20 Steam Code, your song on the A.I.M. 2016 album, you get to be the second to pick a game of your choice from the Prize Pool (details below)!

3rd Place:

An interview with @TheInterviewer, a spray-painted Poster by @Ceevro, Supporter Status (browse ng with no ads courtesy of @TomFulp), Tankmen Figure (donated by @AdamNG), an Alloy Figure (donated by @AdamNG), a Forum Sig drawn by @Template88, your song on the A.I.M. 2016 album, you get to be the third to pick a game of your choice from the Prize Pool (details below)!

Runner-Ups:

A Spray-painted Poster by @Ceevro , Your song gets on the A.I.M. 2016 album (free download after contest) + Forum Sig + Pick A Game from the Prize Pool (details below)!

Fan Favorite:

A tradition of the A.I.M. contests is, every year after the deadline, I start a thread where everyone can nominate their favorite song out of the contest submissions. The winning song will be based on those votes, and also end up on the contest album, and get a forum sig.

Prize Pool:

This year you're in for a treat! Since this year we couldn't afford to give cash as a prize, I asked all you wonderful people of NG if you could donate prizes, and you delivered! Besides the prizes below, the top three winners will be getting prizes that were also donated besides games, thank you to everyone who donated! I will message the winners in order, to let them pick first (1st Place goes first, 2nd goes second, etc). After the top 3 comes the runner-ups and Fan Favoriteto pick what game they want.

Below is a stack of games you could pick from if you get in the Top 3, or if you're a Runner-Up, and even the Fan Favorite will get a game!

Now for the rules!

Rules:

1): The most important thing, make sure you know all the basic rules of Newgrounds in the FAQ regarding Audio Submissions if you aren't familiar with them already. Read Here: http://www.newgrounds.com/wiki/help-information/terms-of-use/audio-guidelines

2): Don't post anything here in this thread other than your song submissions, that's what the discussion thread is for. :P

3): This year, explicit content IS allowed, but the artwork that inspired you can't be A-rated. Sorry guys, but hey, at least it's going past the T-rating this year. Check the ratings of the artwork you choose, you'll want anything either E, T, or M.

4): No covers or remixes, including remaking a song you've made in the past. Defeats the purpose of the contest. New and original entries are accepted here. Cmon man, it's Art-Inspired Music!

5): Do NOT start writing your song until the beginning of the contest, so that way, everyone is at the "start line". Sadly in the past, this has been overlooked and some really good songs have had to be disqualified. Songs that were started before the start date will be disqualified.

6): You can enter up to 2 songs this year.

7): Your song must be between 3-6 minutes. Anything shorter or longer than that will be disqualified.

8): NEW RULE -To make judging easier for us this year, at the beginning of your song title, write AIM (example: AIM - Strawberries) so at the end of the contest, we can judge faster for you guys! Song title limit got stretched recently, so no worries! Also, tag your song with AIM2016 in the tags!

9): Submit your song(s) before the official deadline: July 24th, 2016 (meaning, July 24th will be the last day you can submit until it's 12 'o' clock at night, Eastern time in USA). Post the link of your song here in this thread.

10): Collaboration is allowed and encouraged! You can work with anyone (except us of course), whether it be a singer, producer, etc. They have to have a Newgrounds account so you can add them in the credits. Read up on how the project system works here or if you have questions, ask in the Discussion Thread.

11): If you're unsure of ANYTHING not listed in the rules, feel free to ask us questions in the discussion thread!

12): Submit your song here on Newgrounds (on your Newgrounds account), not SoundCloud or Youtube or anything else, just good old Newgrounds).

13): You must be a scouted artist.

Here's your Judges:

@RealFaction (that'sa me!)

@EDM364 (Newgrounds Veteran and experienced EDM producer, also gives great detailed reviews)

@Warhector (Runner-up in past A.I.M. contests)

@Ectisity (Leader of the Review Request Club)

Good luck everyone! We'll be reviewing and watching along the way!

Rule #14 (though technically is with the rule about no remixing): No vocal packs. If you have vocals they have to be from you or someone you're collabing with. You can still use sample packs for drums and what not, and vsts and plugins like from FL Studio and what not, but..well...no vocal packs. :P

Rule #15: If you decide to use something like Apple loops or a loop of a drum beat, or a synth loop, don't use them as they are originally. Chop it up and make it interesting, otherwise it's not original. Make your own melodies, and beats, don't leave them as they are. Reminder: FL Studio samples as well as other samples ARE allowed, as well as vsts plugins and so on, but this is just referring to loops.

Here's my submission! Music description describes the 2 halves of the song - they interpret different elements of the art.

Music: "Dusk of Eternal Night"

Art: "Before the darkness falls" by Acrylla

My submission
Staring Down The Barrels

Inspired by
Donkey Kong Stage

Great piece of art that brought back a lot of childhood memories. The music is my shot at making a DKC-style theme. Something that might fit the setting of one of their infamous barrel-heavy courses. Reaching a three minute runtime loop was kinda challenging but I had a surge of ideas to make it work.

The gaslights all burned out. You left me here to walk along a burial ground, I don't blame you. We all give up eventually

Woo! Here you go! So excited to have this out. This didn't take as long as I thought it would, actually. I guess I work really fast when I'm inspired, haha.

I was inspired by this art:

Here's my song:

I tried to make it have a sort of Kirby feel, since the art I was inspired by was of Kirby, of course. I made a song I felt could fit in the games...and then made it EDM. Whoops. It's still overly happy though, so I'm guessing that means I succeeded. :P Enjoy!

Are you thinking in terms of pre-set recording with lyrics? Or do you mean everything including choir sample libraries that have "oohs" and "aahs" e.g EastWest's Symphonic Choirs?

'ooohs' and 'aaahs' I imagine are completely fine. It's just a musical instrument in basic terms, right? I could be wrong, but I think it would be okay? The thing is, vocal packs are vocal samples, and Newgrounds in general frowns on samples unless they're used in a creative way. But vocal vsts are also samples (unless they're digital), but I'd still imagine they're fine.

I don't have the knowledge to determine whether I cannot tell the difference or whether the definition of 'vocal packs' needs clarification. However, I think like a lawyer with definitions, and it seems that 'vocals' in the written rule IMPLIES actual lyrics, rather than generic choir sounds.
