Traditional artists - unite! Finally it's our time to shine! :D

The "Traditional" clause in the rules for this one kills me/takes me out of the consideration, I'm sure I'm not the only one. I wish you would reconsider this rule Jazza, because this theme is cool as hell and I wish I wasnt gimped out of being able to make something good for it. Still, it will be refreshing to see what people can make with such a restriction.

Yeah... Because you know, fuck us any other time there's an art contest.

I use almost exclusively traditional media and I agree with Template on no digital allowed being lame. I can get where it's coming from and I think it is great to encourage people to use traditional media, but unfortunately traditional media is expensive and cumbersome to store and I'm many cases recquirement a lot of room to work with. I love traditional media and use it all the time, but I can't help but feelthere are better places for traditional art contests, on the Internet, especially here on Newgrounds, it's cutting out a massive amount of artists from participating. It is your contest in the end and I look forward to seeing the results because it is still an awesome theme; but I can't help but feel that the traditional recquirement will keep us from seeing more great potential submissions rather than it will inspire great submissions.

I just cant wait for someone who spend a huge amount of hours with pencils and ink to immediately loose to someone who used paints only because his submission "looks colorful and pretty"

There really should be different categories when it comes to traditional media.

I'm still going to give the contest a shot, even tough I don't have my hopes high

Alot of digital artists shine in traditional. And its where they learnt the skills they transfered to digital i oersonally prefer digital cause its quicker to smash out ideas and much cheaper. I mean my copic mark set has cost me a few thousand including refills not including the need to always buy canvases paints new brushes spirits ect. Even quality coloured pencils are crazy expensive when you use them often. But im happy to submit a traditional piece i need to find my airbrush stored in my shed.

Ladies and Gents! I'm aware some of you may be stunning artists but might be less used to working in traditional media and putting it online, so may I forward you to this tutorial on how to document your work? The important parts being two directional lights to reduce glare, cropping all the way to the edges of your composition, and adjusting the image after. Cell phone cameras are so good these days you can get away with using them in a pinch, so there's no excuse not to have good photos.

Neat contest, Jazza! Wish I had time to participate.

As a traditional illustrator (watercolors, markers), I'm very excited for this one!

I disagree. I am personally excited about drawing traditionally. We all have a natural ability to be creative within us without computers and actually inspires creativity. I would urge you to reconsider not Jazza! Thanks Mate for a great choice

:I hear what you are saying and potentially it could cut a lot of artists out. However, even most digiart starts with pen an paper and these challenges are about pushing ourselves artistically (not just for the prizes). I am a traditional artist and have had to push myself digitally so I ask the question, why can't digital artists push themselves traditionally? Food for thought.

A lot of people seem to be complaining for various reasons and I see their point, but I would like to be that guy and remind people to still do it for fun, even if you think you have no shot. Everything will help in the long run and I'm really excited to see everyone's entries, almost even more so since it's so different.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I hear a lot of whining going on. It's a challenge, there to push yourself. That's how we get better. Simple really.

Hi Justown, So glad to hear that. Why are the digital artist complaining? Just take the challenge and see what you come up with.

At 3/3/16 12:43 PM, John-Young wrote: so I ask the question, why can't digital artists push themselves traditionally? Food for thought.

Um I answered that: financial reasons, space, not having a proper set up to work with traditional art, or just straight up not living in an area where traditional art supplies aren't available to them as readily (last one is new). Pen or pencil and paper are cheap and easy to keep and but aren't likey to win or get much recognition if it's piece with only those two, not saying it can't be done just that it's unlikely. Paints, chalks, pastels etc all recquire things like brushes, space, in some cases solvents and fixatives and in some cases good ventilation to work with; markers that are worth a damn get expensive quick; that really leaves colored pencils which are great to use so we'll probably end up seeing a lot of those pieces, which again not a bad thing but if everyone is using colored pencil I think they will get lost a bit, or rather ones that aren't will stand out more by virtue of being different. If this contest pushes people who have traditional media available to them to use it or try it out, awesome, however as I said I don't think it it will, or at least I think the trade off of the number of people it will inspire versus the number of people it will turn away isn't in the favor of the creativity side.
Another big problem I have is all of the traditional artists saying "it's our time to shine" and similar things. Every other one of these contests (to my knowledge) allows for both traditional and digital submissions, it's never not been traditional artists time to shine they've just (apparently) never stepped up. It's an annoying thing here how people think of traditional as a crutch when compared to digital art, because it's not and it shouldn't be seen as one.
I also see a lot of people saying "remember this is about fun and pushing yourself to do new things" to which I call bullshit, it's a contest. I'm not saying 1st prize is the only thing and that nothing else matters, but drawing for fun and experimentation should happen in art outside of contests as well, the initiative to try new things shouldn't be tied to what Jazza's latest contest is asking, it should be inherent in any artist.
All that being said I don't expect Jazza's to change the rules, I'm sure he has his reasons, however inconceivable they may be to me.
Also, John, when I make a post I have already thought a great deal about what I am going to write, and why am going to write it; furthermore when people voice their concerns its not "whining" or "complaining", it's voicing their concerns. In the future you should really drop that patronizing tone, it's an ugly trait to have.

:Hi JackDCurleoJackDCurleo, I am sorry if you feel offended by what I said, that was not my intention. I just could not understand why there is so much negative attitude towards this month's challenge of the month drawing competition. I am not a digital artist by nature and I am having to learn how to use it and that too by the way is expensive as I am on Adobe CC and pay monthly. But the point of these competitions is about stretching yourself not just entering for a prize. Personally I have found these challenges have really helped me improve and, while it would be lovely to win, the challenge itself is enough for me. Lastly traditional art does not have to be expensive, You can even do some great artwork with a cheap biro (I have seen some amazing art done that way). So try not to take these comments so personally please.

I don't have the materials, unlike most people I learned to draw solely on the tablet, unless I'm going to go out and buy an oil painting set and somehow retroactively learn to use it, I cant really compete in this at all. (probably couldn't compete against professionals digitally anyways but i digress) Its my own fault for learning to draw in such a limited way, but honestly I'm only voicing my opinion about this because this theme is really cool and I would've liked to have done it.

First time entering Jazza's challenge. This is my clear sketch on brown thick paper. Summer girl stumbling on the icy ground with her rollers and the snowman who is very amused about it... the other two seasons are also present.

Thank you for your comments. Let me firstly apologise. On reflection maybe I will a little harsh and for that I am truly sorry. Digital art is amazing but does mean traditional artists find it harder to compete so it is good to be able to incorporate other mediums. That said there are mediums that you could maybe consider that would not be too expensive. Mostly when I draw I use a biro or pen and ink with some Berol Pens. It would be a shame for you not to enter because it is traditional. But I understand your concerns better and I appreciate you taking time to share them.
