Haha! This reminds me of me when I started drawing and kinda looks like yours.
Don't forget to learn the basic fundamentals of art and a good idea about the human body.

I can only assume that he is referring to human anatomy, shading, perspective, values, composition and a few other things I can't think of right now. Your work is looking alright for now though, keep posting your drawings and we can get a better idea for what areas you need to work on and what advice to give you.
since you are doing character drawings right now though I would recommend doing some figure drawings, (posemaniacs is a good place to start) and then moving on to gestures to inject personality into your characters. Try not to spend to much time on any one figure or gesture while practicing and be sure to practice a lot.
hope that helps in some capacity.

There are kinda many fundamentals that most people try to learn but for basics, these are adequate.
For me, I started learning with basic shapes, forms with 3d shapes, space/perspective, and a basic idea of the human anatomy.
Well like JackDCurleo said, practicing with figure and gesture drawing will help you improve a lot even for simple cartoon characters.
I didn't indulge on that a lot, but I did do quite a few and I was able to simplify the body to mannequins which my goal really was.
Right now, I can (kinda) draw characters without looking awkward and being too stiff.
I'm still learning and I got a lot of stuff to work with anatomy and shading as of now, but the key thing to improving is to really practice.
Also, another tip, try to make him have 4 fingers instead of 5. It really looks weird and unnecessary when your character is a cartoon.

I'll just assume you meant, "There's no difference there. Just more...stuff"
Actually there are lots of stuff you need to work with.
In the pic I showed you, it's more resembling life with more loose forms.
The pic you drew isn't even a correct sketch.
I assume he's on a sitting position but in a stiff and awkward manner.

Alright, 123 I think you need to lay off a bit. Let the guy draw the things he wants to draw, give your advice and suggestions for improvement then back up and let him draw and post the things he wants to. Improvement doesn't come over night and just because he's reluctant to do studies right now doesn't necessarily mean that he's never going to do them or that he won't use this advice later. Give him more time to improve.

Yeah, sorry.
It's just that when I tried to start drawing, I refused all these advice and proceeded on drawing what I just wanted.
Because of that, I totally gave up drawing for 2 years until I got motivated again from a comic I found in the internet.
Looking back, I totally regret what I did.
I just don't want people who started ended up like what I did. :C
Sorry if I'm being too pushy.

I guess it's okay, that left foot is a bit off, it looks like it should be pointed more towards us. What you should keep in mind when doing poses is what mood and or emotion do you want to convey with them right now though I'd say really just work on your anatomy and get the shapes to look a way that you're happy with. The absolute best thing you can do is try to ditch the cartoony proportions for now and practice more human anatomy since it does make doing cartoons much easier, but I'm not going to hound you if you don't.
Although I am curious what is your endgame with these pose studies? What do you want to do with your art? Make an animation, comic, make fine art? We can tailor our advice better if we have an idea of what you're going for here.
