Despite the fact that I am nothing -- a nobody and completely incompetent in music; I will be hosting a new contest in the near future. I want to reward the winner of the contest by paying their tuition for the musical college of their choice. Getting to know some of you on a personal level has truly inspired me, and it has proven to me that potential untapped due to economical restraints is simply unacceptable. I do this simply because I want to support you and help you succeed in reaching your musical goals.

However, I would just like to get your quick opinion. Would you all prefer a cash prize over a paid tuition? I've thought about it, and a large percentage of users here are teens who are seeking to pursue a degree that is not in music. Call me out if I sound like a complete fool, but what do you all believe is a better prize for a contest here?

Degrees or paper

No. You all deserve more than what I could ever offer.

So you would dish out 160 grand to send someone to berklee for 4 years? Do you mean a single semester of tuition? I'm confused this seems too intense.

Also I love you

You all would use financial aid and apply for scholarships. Then, I will cover the rest. But again, I may go with a standard cash prize. It depends on the circumstances of the majority population. I don't want to give a prize to the winner that will be useless to him/her. I have much to consider it seems!

I would say give a personal prize. Tuition of sorts to a college of choice or a cash prize depending on the needs of the individual. Set some limits on tuition pricing, and make it slightly more then the cash prize to reward the educational route.

Yeah, so maybe I should keep the prize confidential until a winner is revealed and perhaps consult with the winner to choose a prize so I'm not viewed as judging somebody by their circumstances.

You think like a real executive.

...still seems waaaay too good to be true. But Hell, I'll definitely hop on this contest whenever you start it. It does seem kind of dark to play God over who is worthy enough to earn an education, or at least that's the context I'm getting hahahahaha.

Dude, college tuition is absurdly expensive at this point, far more than simple cash prizes which have been found on NG. Even assuming financial aid, this is a serious expense. What the heck man I'd make a 20-minute hip-hop mashup while standing on my head for 40 hours for this, and I hate hip-hop.

This is very nice of you. The thing is if you give the people cash, then you will never know what they spend it on. Maybe if you have some way to ensure that they spend it on college. Unless you don't have a preference to what they spend it on. This is extremely kind of you though. I applaud you for your kindheartedness :)

*Laughs* yep, even with a few scholarships I'm still looking at over $100,000 for my own education. You'll definitely want to set limits.

Furthermore, I'd do anything to be more financially stable and would join such a contest myself, but I could get a college degree regardless of this contest or not. So, you might want to focus on those who want a degree that involves music/whatever but can't get one.

Then again, if I fail any single class (a major hardship considering my extreme difficulties in math, hard sciences and foreign languages) I'm out and can't continue. (Even worse is that I am required to take 2 courses from each.)

So, it will depend on your wishes.

Response to Degree in Music 2013-09-11 11:02:01

Well, personally, if I were to take part in this, I wouldn't take the education route because I can't take music as a career. I am completely inept when it comes to the technical side of music, due to disabilities that I can't overcome. I would prefer a cash prize which I could spend on upgrading my VSTs, because I've been stuck with EWQL Silver for god knows how long.

However, whatever the outcome, this is the most generous thing I've directly seen in a long time. Power to you, Bosa.

If this is a serious concept I have two things to say:

1) You are an incredibly awesome and kind person.
2) This would be the most epic contest ever. :)

I think we are all on Punk'd with Ashton Kutcher right now.

You should split a cash prize with a few of the younger yet super skilled composers here (in no particular order) like Step, Echo, SkyeWintrest, and Stunkel etc... provided that they use the prize to pay for tuition in a degree in music.

Otherwise you would also have to consider moving costs, room and board. Stuff like that.

even so, the music degree apartment is REALLY RISKY after college.

you are never guaranteed a job.

that's why I'm going to minor some form of music tech and major in accounting.

I would take insecure job placement any day as opposed to taking up a line of work I don't enjoy.

This is why I'm going to do music and programming. Music because I love it, programming because I enjoy it and it's kinda a big job in this day and age.

This^

Also this is a great idea, Bosa, kudos. Personally I too can't take a career in music, mostly because it's way too impractical for where I live. However, should I win a cash prize, I would definitely be willing to spend it in upgrades that would further my erstwhile career in music (like VSTs, hardware etc) and would be more than ok with providing proof that I did in fact spend this money on this kind of stuff.

Oh and thank you for including me on that list @frootza <3

In all honesty, I'd rather have a day job that can pay for new equipment for my music and play and enjoy music all night long until the next day.

Music jobs don't pay as much.

So for my 5 years at Berklee;
Two majors, and a minor, you'll cover that?

Last semester here and the last 3 years was all out of pocket, scholarships, financial aid and only 2 years paid by loans I think that actually might be reasonable. Otherwise a full tuition without financial aid or scholarships will cost you an arm and a leg at any college focused on music.

Maybe you can pay for my Master's Degree if I decide to do so...

But really, that's really nice of you Bosa, I was thinking of doing something similar for a film scoring contest. I think The tuition thing might be a bit of a stretch, I'm sure some would go for it but there aren't many people I think trying to pursue music in college. The majority of your contestants might protest for a cash prize or something...
