What do we have? Cheesesteaks, hamburgers, fried chicken. Hotdogs are German, pizza is French, tough to think of food that is truly American.

Honestly, the USA simply wasn't around soon enough to have many unique dishes that aren't based off something else.

If you had to pick a single national dish, it would probably be the hamburger, since it's so pervasive. The only thing with that is that it's become so popular globally that it's more like a global dish of US origin. Really though, most places with distinct cuisine have more than one national dish. Gumbo would be another good one for the US, although it doesn't see huge popularity outside the regional level.
