well it attracts alot more traffic then alot of sites and generates lots of activity for artists, newgrounds is cool too but newgrounds trying to be like every other site out there.

It is a terrible place for art. When I first founs it, I thought it was a ln amateur "alternative" (goth, punk..) porno site and after looking around I realized it was a photography site focused mainly on self-shots.
Of course now I realize it is much more than this. The people who take the pictures of themselves also create a variety of original fan art.
I am not mocking it. This is what I honestly thought and still think.

DeviantArt is what you want it to be. I only use my account to hang out with people interested in illustration and painting, so from my perspective the site is a wonderful casual extension from the sites I already use. The "Groups" feature really does shine in this regard.
I use Deviantart as a dump site for my art. I post my good shit on the Art Portal.

Has anyone outside the staff ever tried to exploit the site for money beyond art commissions? I know that the site accepts SWF files, so I imagine that it'd be a viable avenue for someone to try and maximize their CPMStar ad revenue.
