I gotta say Randy did something amazing and he got me involved with a lot of things, one of them; making flash movies, I joined his forums and visited regurarly. He was also half-norwegian which was cool because I'm a norwegian. He was one of those who inspired me and probably many others, he held the forums up but he wasnt on much, but we had already created a good community there. I hate that one of those who brought us all together in that forum now is gone. I will miss him, and the inspiration he gave... I am now watching the funeral of mario in one of his movies and reflecting on him

rest in peace randy

Does it live?

Randy is one of the first artists I started following- especially his Rise of the Mushroom Kingdom series. I pray that others will be inspired by him so his memory will live on.

Mrs. Solem,

I loved Randy. He hosted a website that contained my only friends for multiple years while growing up. His talent was hard to match; his friendliness was a trait accepted my all; his legacy will remain in our minds and hearts for more years than we will be able to count. He helped me. He showed me. He encouraged me. I will never forget him.

I am currently struggling with rent, but I will donate when I can. His daughter is sure to be as talented as his genes exhibited, she should be shown Montessori and encouraged to persue her passion as her father did(obviously that's up to you but it worked for Randy).

As I am only an internet fan/acquaintance, I probably do not have as much to say as you or your family or the people he knew personally... And for that, I only wish I had been a part of your family. The least I can do is quote my memorandum:

"Just found out that the owner/developer of Rise of the Mushroom Kingdom, Randy Solem, passed away on March 16th, my birthday, in 2012. In my teenage years, before memes, before facebook, in the times of newgrounds, stupidvideos, and ebaumsworld.com, his forum and following helped me find a social niche that accepted me and helped me become who I am today. RIP Randy.... I will never forget your forums that allowed me to grow.... I remember conversing with him and the developer of Alien Hominid before it was ported to the console. Good people, good projects, and good intentions... I do and will always miss that group I will probably never talk to again </3

Long live www.videogamedc.com"

I miss you, Randy. I am sad, humbled, and will continue to reflect upon this for an undetermined amount of time. He helped me. He doesn't know it. Nobody does. But he helped improve my entire life. I was lost when I met him and when I found myself, him and his crew were still there, still had my back. None of them knew it. I doubt any of them remember me. But I visited his dern forum every day for 3 years. They were my friends. They were my family. And he started it all.

R.I.P To Randy Solem: you Inspire me in making flash Animations and to continue to pursue my goals to become a better Artist and i Promise to Deliver and that! on newgrounds. I use to roll with y'all back in the days but not as just an artist but as a member of this great community thank you! I promise to create something inspirational before i'm dead on newgrounds.

For those wanting to know what happen! to randy below is a Documentary of Him and his medical conditions.

Here the lnik of the site

It's always disheartening to learn that one of your cherished icons has passed on, but it's even more disheartening to discover their death months after the fact.

Randy Solem, creator of Video Game Director's Cuts and the "Rise of the Mushroom Kingdom" Flash series, passed away at age 36 on March 16, 2012, due to a negative reaction to his heart medications. He was one of the great legends from the early days of Newgrounds as well as the guy who almost single-handedly popularized "sprite films," Flash movies that use old videogame graphics, typically from the 8- and 16-bit eras.

Randy was an influence to many young Flash animators -- I myself was inspired to submit a few high school and college presentations in the sprite film format. Back in December, I even wrote an Video Game Director's Cuts retrospective, which will hopefully serve as an adequate memorial of Randy's legacy in the absence of a proper, timely article.

Sorry for your loss but your angry reply doesn't help your cause at all. Dont want my money even though you asked for it? Thats fine dude, and frankly many causes of death tend to be because of an overdose of some kind, unfortunately rarely these days about age or natural cause. I'm not a piece of shit because I question someone asking money from me too many do these days.

So you know what fuck you. This happens to a lot of people so being a dick about it wont make you feel any better, and turns me away from giving a shit. Dont ask money from random people off the net just comes off tacky.

After watching Rise of the Mushroom Kingdom again after like 10 years, I was so hyped to see what Randy Solem was up to and what he mayhaps had in mind. Granted, I've never met the guy, but I can say with certainty that the dude is a legend from the early days of combining sprites with flash animation.

I'm so shocked to hear the man has passed. I absolutely loved his flash animations, they were always something to look forward to in my teen years. I've rewatched his movies so many times, I've honestly lost count. What an absolutely cool dude.

I hope his family is doing well in his absence. Damn. I hope his family knows the man was an absolute beast. Especially his daughter that hardly knew'em.

RIP Randy Solem. The man, the myth, the legend.

R.I.P. Randy Solem.

His Mario animations were my childhood. So I came back to watch them again 2019, and found out about his passing.

This makes me so sad, even if I'm very late to know about it.

I just hope his videos never get deleted, so that he may still bring happiness from far away.

Beyond his sprite movies, Randy was a great guy and supportive member of the NG community. He'll be greatly missed.

Randy's family is accepting donations for his 18 month old daughter. If you can, please Paypal some money to RielleSolemTrustFund@Yahoo.com and it will go into a fund to pay for her education.

After the passing of Ben Spurgin in 2009, we talked about setting up a page to document NG regulars who are no longer with us. I finally set up this In Memoriam page in the Wiki. Let me know if you have suggestions / additions. I'd like to add pictures so we'll probably do that.

Randy and Brn died sorry guys

It is is fulfilled 10 years of his tragic death.
I trust that the new VGDC member will continue his legacy, not only remaking/remastering old flash cartoons, but also making new ones.
It shame that he never got the oportunity to play the latter Mario games on 3DS,Wii U and Switch or to see the upcoming Mario movie or TV shows based on videogames like Castlevania and Cuphead.
So depressing
