Funnily those are 2 supports where it's better to build them damage rather than AP. Sona is easy you stack aura items build 2 gold per five items heal and spam q and build Shurelyas to get in and out of combat easy. And buy wards. The biggest thing Sona can do early is buy a faerie charm 3 sight wards or 1 sight ward and 1 vision ward if there is a stealthy asshole on their team.

Basically your job as a support is to heal and build items that benefit the team hence why Shurelyas and Iron Solari are awesome items. Then you can build Aegis of the Legion, Will of The Ancients if your team has a good amount of APcarries on your team, Zeke's if they have DPS or just build an Abyssal Scepter to cut down on their teams MR.

It's up to you but some things work better than others.
