Hello.

This is ~a~ return of the Creature of the Week (or COW) weekly art contest with ZERO PRIZES!

wooo

where the aim of the game is to design a Creature loosely based on the Weekly theme.
Once the week is up there is a voting thread, where peeps nominate their favourite concept.
After that the winning pic will be raised up on an imaginary pedestal for a while!
Watch this space for future topics.

Any other queries, just pop them in the thread.

This week's theme: VOLCANO DWELLER!
Design a creature that lives near/within a volcanic region.

===CREATURE OF THE WEEK RULES===
- Only one entry per user will go through to the vote thread.
- You cannot post your old work.
- No human likenesses.
- No real-life animals (play-on-names are fine).
- No creature chimeras.
- A description for your creature is recommended, but not necessary.
- No MS Paint.
- If I decide not enough time has been spent on a submission, it won't be accepted.
- Entries MUST be known to the host of the contest.
- All other Art Forum rules apply.

Deadline is the 5th of December, sometime.

I like how this COW is all about heat, as winter is approaching.

I apologize if this sounds like a stupid question, but I'm going ask anyway. . .

How literal are rules like:

- No real-life animals (play-on-names are fine).

For example, (in keeping with the volcano dweller theme) would a crab-like creature that secretes lava from bulbous stone fissures in its shell constitute something too similar to a real-life animal? How dissimilar from a crab would it have to be? Extra legs? No claws? Fur?

I think you've nailed uniqueness with the lava fissures from its shell. If it looks too much like a crab you get from a fishmongers, you could alter it slightly ... say give it extra craggy features.

So long as it isn't "This is an Oliphant" and you submit a pic of an elephant.

I have a question.. What is meant exactly by 'No creature chimeras'?

no putting together a creature just with parts from different animals

No taking pre-existing creatures and combining them to create something new.
Like putting the head of a lion on the body of a cow and calling it original.

If I have the time, I'll try to get in on this beef action.

Delicious.

i would say yes, it is too humanoid... it has definable arms and head with a humanoid face *like the thing from fantastic four... but lava style*

nice work so far... I would try to break it up, so more of a creature then a person, your the artist after all.

that's a shame. Y'know that's funny haha, I thought the same thing after I layed his color down xD He does kinda resemble the thing. ah, well I'm pretty happy with this piece as is, so if Turkey doesn't okay it, I'll just finish it as it's own thing ^^

Mmm, yes, jeeshwa's and bwip's are extremely similar, so if one isn't accepted, neither should the other, I feel.

Response to Creature Of The Week #86 2011-11-29 15:45:50

I feel both of the problems with being too humanoid can be easily fixed by changing the face a bit.
Give it different eyes, or a different mouth, no nose, or change it something else entirely.

i don't want any awkward tension created via my artwork. I agree with the statement that bwip's and mine are pretty similar. I stand to my previous statement that if mine's too humanoid, i don't have to be in it. I'll just enter the cow next week :3

For future preferences, would driders be okay? They're Human/Arachnid, I'm not sure if they fall under the too human category

I would think not, as they're partially humanoid, they're chimeras, and they already exist.
