Same Old Same Old - More Technology 2011-05-28 23:32:29
During the 80's and 90's arcades, the NES, Sega Master System, Super Nintendo, and Sega Genesis dominated during that time. Although there were many wonderful games out there, the one genre that tended to dominate that era on home consoles was the Platformer. Yeah there were plenty of RPGS and Fighting games as well, but it was mainly the Platformer.
If you've ever been to an arcade you know that it was possible to find some friendly gamers, get a bite to eat and drink and have a ball as long as you had quarters to spare, or even if you didn't have any money it was fun to watch two heated players at a game of Mortal Kombat or even a racing game. Playing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with three complete strangers could be a very fun experience or even a select group of friends that you only knew at the arcade.
However during your time at an arcade you would come across the asshole or the whiner. This was typical, just like every day life. That was the sour part of going to an arcade and knowing that that one asshole who was very arrogant and that one whiner when they lost they would try to say it was the machine or that you cheated somehow or that you beat them in a cheap way and if they won the same whiner would gloat as though they were the best player in the world even if they won in a cheap way and then call you out as the whiner.
Does any of the above sound familiar?
Let's fast forward time. Nowadays the most popular genre is the First Person Shooter and yes there are many other different genres that are coming forth, one being the sandbox and puzzle, which people are adapting the First Person Shooter into these formats such as Fallout 3 and Portal to just give examples. Yes you still have other wonderful genres one being dominate is the adventure genre with games like The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves just to give examples.
Today you have the XBOX 360, PlayStation Network, and Wii Wi-Fi. Online play is the brand new universal arcade. Sounds amazing doesn't it. For those who went to arcades say that online there are more assholes, this was an opinion that I shared with people, but as I thought about it it's not that there are more assholes online than in arcades it is that the technology has increased and connected more people together. Think about it if your local arcade has three assholes and two whiners and my arcade has four whiners and six assholes then our arcades merge guess what the number has now increased, it's basic mathematics.
However with that basic mathematics we gain more fun and honest to goodness people who just enjoy playing games. We meet brand new complete strangers that we can enjoy playing with like we would in arcades.
So things really haven't changed, other than a new preferred genre. Super Mario Bros., Mega Man, Sonic the Hedgehog, and CastleVania made the platformer genre the preferred genre. The same way Halo and Call of Duty made the First Person Shooter genre the preferred genre.
The new wave of technology has give us more freedoms to choose who we want to play with and who we don't want to play with. So we have many options. However at the same time that also means that people also have the technology to complain, so overall more technology has made things both better and worse, but overall I believe it has made gaming for the better.

2. What is your favorite game to play online?
3. Have you ever been to an arcade?
