Hey everyone! I'm new to NG and just like you, want to be good as an artist.

I guess here's where my art can get posted - mostly unfinished/sketchy though!
I'll post up more finished ones in my profile.

Comments and anything I need to work on are greatly appreciated. I'm open to requests, but I can't guarantee a speedy delivery.

So uh... here's my art!

Thank you for the welcome~!

Here's one I'm working on at the moment. Someone suggested to me a little red riding hood inspired piece so here it is! I want to give it a fantasy feel at the end, sort of like Lord of the Rings.

Thus far, I'm in love with your work. It's gorgeous. Post more!
You can post already finished works, too, if you like.

Good stuff to start a thread with. The elbows could be smoothed out a bit, but the rest is solid.
Also, I've always wondered what a Jinberry was. If I rub one, does a genie pop out?

No silly! If you rub one really hard their hair causes massive static!

Not bad. Not bad at all. You're on your way. I would say however, slapping your url on the artwork is super duper tacky. Let your artwork stand alone. If someone enjoys it, they'll take the time to find your website. Regardless, you show promise. Keep it up.

I like your style, I like how it's full but the details aren't completely fleshed out but you can still tell what everything is and stuff mmhmm

Keep your url on the work, I'd just keep/make it small like in the second one. Looks nicer and doesn't interfere with the composition. I often put my url on images I think will circulate to drive traffic back to my portfolio.

I always put watermarks on my work because as Hyptosis said, it leads viewers who may have stumbled on the picture somewhere back to me if they are interested to see more. Especially because I post my stuff at Tumblr and other social media platforms, people reblog/re-tweet/FB-share them and so do their friends, and so on. Then people lose the source of the image so those who are interested to see more couldn't. It also deters art thieves so that they can't just take the image and claim it as theirs.

With that said! Here's a new sketch. Please let me know if there's a striking error in her anatomy. I know there is. I've been going at her elbows all night and it still bothers me like nothing else.

Any time. If you can't get your hands on a cheap life drawing class, try posemaniacs.com, I use it a lot for gesture stuff.

GAH! I'm fuming. My uni group is so lazy! We have a presentation to do tomorrow, and I'm missing a LOT of info from my group members but they just refuse to reply to my emails! I mean, I procrastinate a lot too, but I get my shit on time no matter what, AND I communicate to others to keep them in the loop. *huffs*

So I draw in protest.

Dear Lazy Uni Group,
YOU NEED TO BE MORE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR TASKS!!

WIP for the Flood, I did the nose wrong so I'll do it again soon! To be coloured with copic markers. I hope I get it done in time. Sorry Hyptosis, your sketch isn't done yet!

So! I've started colouring her in copic markers, and I constantly question my colour choices. I'm thinking of colouring her hair in charcoal, or along those lines.

...thoughts? :D

I think the shading is quite good, and I love the detailing in the skirt and hair, the only thing I can critique is the face. I saw your life drawings, which are really good, but out of curiosity did you use one for this piece? Even if you're drawing in an anime/cartoon style a reference can be helpful when you're attempting tricky angles of the face like that.

You're indeed correct in assuming I didn't use reference for this one! =( I really should be using some huh? I'm good at copying, but in drawing things off the top of my head... I'm really wonky. xP

That looks great! I love the lineart, what did you use for it? (the lineart).

One of her arms is longer than the other and that kinda bothers me, I think the other problem areas would be her neck and as mentioned her head, this could be remedied with more references when drawing, until you feel comfortable not using references or something aside from that, I love the hair.

Dangit, I knew I should've posted the sketch before it's all inked up + coloured so I could've corrected myself earlier... =( Your comments are really helpful though, so in the next work I'll definitely use reference. PROMISE.

Here's the completed piece up on my userpage:
http://www.newgrounds.com/art/view/jinbe rry/eris-the-goddess-of-discord

Now I pose a question to you guys: What comes first, the reference or your idea? I mean, do you find the reference/inspiration for your image before you come up with the idea, or do you have an idea and then search far and wide for reference images to match?

Response to Made of 100% crushed Jinberries! 2011-06-04 22:59:53

Personally, I have a concept or idea first, then I sketch it out if it's not too difficult, otherwise I usually take a picture of myself doing the pose (especially if it's something I can't describe and find on google without going through a gagillion pages) then I work it up.

Like Jive said your life drawings are quite good, you have a real observant eye. I would use that natural strength to my advantage (plus my favorite comic artist, Alex Ross, does it all the time).
