Why does my lineart suck so much?

this too, I actually like it more than my finished submission, I think it looks trippier.

I thought I'd share this one with you before the year ends. It was suppossed to be a gradation exercise but i think it works as animation anyway. Bigger.

My beard is not nearly that long but it would be cool if it was.
There's also something very wrong with the first self portrait...

He is from the Legacy of Kain games. I only played Soul Reaver but it was pretty cool, you should check it out. And thanks!

Look how they massacred my boy.

This didn't come up as I wanted, he doesn't look sad enough, it's way too smudged, plus the spray made it look dustier than it already was, and other things.

I'll apreciate it if you take the time to tell me how to improve this one, or something else in this thread.

Something that's bothering me is that I was trying to make it look realistic, but not too realistic, kind of like this, but it somehow ended up looking like a failed attempt at photorealism.

This is boss you should work on it a bit more to make it real smooth though... and loop better.

I really didn't care much about the smoothness because it wasn't supposed to be animated, I will take special care of it if I ever make one again.

Maybe it would have been better if I just ignored the penumbra?

Yes. One tone would look much better. Flash doesn't blend colours, but trying to use it as some sort of "regular" bitmap painting program can still make interesting results. Few colours and sharp, tight shapes... That could really work with Flash.
You were doing good, colours are really well-chosen and we can make out the stuff you were portraiting all right. I say yay.

I know, I was trying to make them like. these, but failed miserably. You're right about the colors, a maximum of three tones each would have helped it look a little less messy, i think :/

I literally found out about that fucking shadow terminology like, yesterday.

Anyway, nah it wouldn't have made it any worse. This was a pretty dismal result compared to your other stuff. Dismal choice of program to begin with. You don't draw in flash, you advise other people who you don't like to draw in flash. Least that's my personal take. Joe's got it downpat.

Yeah I can help out.

For the hand - had a bit of trouble with the same aspects myself, but then I drew something like 200 of them and you tend to pick up a few things. Basically, your problem (as was mine) is that you've abstractized the hand shapes too much instead of taking into account what exactly they comprise of - mushy flesh and bone alike - and basically take the basic shape at face value. Bit of a mistake.

Did a redline of it, myself - featuring red lines - of the ways that I would have altered it. Few of them make all the difference.

Moving onto the cheekbones - as much as the love the way you treat anatomy (read: as a guideline rather then a rule) indicating the cheekbone itself was just a weird move. you could have achieve quite a bit more by laying off the lines, and indicating the ludicrously gaunt cheeks instead. 'nother quick redline.

Otherwise... yeah it's pretty damn fine. I mean I know something along the lines of jack shit about watercolour so I can't help you out there, but still it turned out okay, man.

I'm trying to draw some more "complicated" stuff in flash, rather than just cartoony stuff. May be helpful someday!

Thanks a lot for that!! That makes a whole difference, specially that bone line. The hand is actually referenced from my own, and as you can imagine it was hard (and painful after a while) having it in that position while trying to draw it at the same time. No excuse though, I shall just draw tons of hands like you did, and faces, even though i really don't like the fix you did on the cheekbone (no offence), but I appreciate it very much!

Here is some acrylic on a small piece of wood, I made it last night in about three hours.
I decided to play it safe an just go for the pretentious artsy painting.

The anatomy is pretty horrible, I know that, I was trying to focus more on the colors and get used to acrylics, they're really not as painful as I thought :D

Maybe I should just stop doing this kind of stuff at night, the colors look very different with the small lamp than with the sunlight.

Anyway, this is my first serious attempt at acrylic painting so any feedback is much appreciated!!
