I'm planning on going on an absolute icon binge tomorrow, as I haven't created many in quite some time and wish to actually contribute more. In the meantime, I have come to report two stolen flashes that have come in this morning and gone under the radar of the whistleblowing.

I think there is a good method, indeed. Just use the iconhelpers page. There you find flashes that don't even have a 46 x 46 icon - and through that authors with more iconless flashes. The list is long - and it updates itself when everything is done there. Beware that most flashes on that list are pretty old and have few views.
Personally, I have the feeling that making Genres for more popular flashes could be more efficient at this point to make sure that they can be found once the redesign launches. Some flashes have over 30,000 views, but not a genre, no search tags and some have not even an icon.

Admittedly, my ongoing list of oldest flashes to work on is cluttered with authors who are done already but I do my best to put everyone who needs an icon made into a separate list for anyone to work on. Another thing I'll admit is that I've been burned out from icon/genre modding duties altogether but I'd like to get back into it. Even though work does wear me out, I have to keep remembering Tom's words of "[Bahamut] defines that user who is working with us getting through the trenches to get the massive initiatives done."
I'll get back to my spreadsheet file and catch up on the last assignments I handed out. Hopefully then I'm ready to kick back.

Trust me, that's what I've thought ever since I started helping out and the more I work on updating the submissions, the more I look at the redesign and say to myself "Wow, so much work I put into towering the genres with submissions I stumbled across."

Managed to make 70 icons today and I've had work all day. This week at work really should absorb my energy but funny enough, it's the same week since I started this job where I'm actually doing something for at least two days. I have a new method in mind for icon modding and that's starting up soon after turning the laptop on after getting back from work so I'll see how this experiment goes. If I can hit 16k within a day or two, that should declare my burnout as cured. Maybe once you've had fun with your FFXIII-2, you can join us again. How does that sound?

I can provide author assignments if that helps more. I'm never sure how often that page updates and besides, I think a few might be covering the Icon Helpers list already. It would suck if more than one of us was clashing with each other for icons.
